3D printed shoes are no longer just experimental prototypes. They are becoming wearable products that people can actually experience in everyday conditions. From lattice midsoles used by global sports brands to fully 3D printed footwear produced without traditional tooling, additive manufacturing is steadily reshaping how shoes are designed, manufactured, and customized.

I recently had the opportunity to test multiple 3D printed shoes at a major international trade show, including fully printed lattice designs worn for extended hours on hard exhibition floors. Beyond simply trying them on, I stress-tested comfort, breathability, durability, and practicality while also speaking directly with industry leaders developing the next generation of 3D printed footwear.

This guide breaks down what 3D printed shoes actually are, how lattice structures work, which brands are leading the space, and whether fully printed footwear delivers real advantages over hybrid designs. If you are wondering whether 3D printed shoes are comfortable, durable, sustainable, or even possible to print at home, this in-depth overview will give you clear, experience-based answers.

Why 3D Printed Shoes Matter Now

3D printed shoes have moved beyond experimental concept pieces and into real products that people can actually wear. What started as futuristic lattice prototypes is now evolving into fully printed footwear systems that challenge traditional manufacturing, materials, and even brand models. The conversation is no longer about whether 3D printing can produce shoes, but whether it can improve how shoes are designed, customized, and distributed.

With major brands exploring lattice midsoles and emerging companies producing fully 3D printed structures, the footwear industry is quietly entering a digital manufacturing shift. For makers, designers, and technology enthusiasts, this is more than a trend. It represents a potential rethinking of production, ownership, and personalization in one of the world’s largest consumer product categories.

What Are 3D Printed Shoes?

3D printed shoes fall into two main categories. One approach uses 3D printing to produce a lattice midsole while the rest of the shoe, including the upper, remains traditionally manufactured. These lattice structures are designed to provide tuned cushioning, energy return, and visual impact, but they represent a hybrid model rather than a fully printed product.

Fully 3D printed shoes take a different approach by producing the entire structure as a single printed form. Instead of combining printed and conventional components, the whole shoe is manufactured through additive processes. This removes tooling and assembly steps and opens the door to digital customization, but it also introduces new questions around comfort, durability, and scalability.

The Technology Behind 3D Printed Footwear

At the core of most 3D printed footwear is lattice geometry. Instead of solid foam, these shoes use engineered cellular structures that can be tuned for cushioning, flexibility, and energy return. By adjusting the size, density, and orientation of the lattice, designers can control stiffness in specific zones of the sole, directly influencing comfort and durability.

Materials play an equally important role. Most 3D printed shoes rely on elastomer-based materials such as TPU or flexible polymers that combine resilience with fatigue resistance. Industrial systems often use advanced nylons or performance elastomers, while makers experimenting at home typically rely on flexible TPU filaments. The material choice determines not only comfort but also lifespan and structural integrity.

From a manufacturing perspective, selective laser sintering has become the dominant process for functional footwear due to its ability to produce strong, flexible lattice structures without support material. Resin-based systems can achieve fine detail and consistent elasticity, while FDM printing remains more accessible but limited in long-term wear performance. Hybrid models combine printed components with traditional uppers, bridging digital and conventional production.

Beyond hardware, 3D printed footwear introduces a different design workflow. Digital modeling, foot scanning, and iterative prototyping allow for rapid refinement without tooling changes. While true mass personalization is still evolving, the shift toward scan-to-production pipelines signals a future where fit and structure can be digitally optimized before a shoe is ever manufactured.

Major Brands & Players in 3D Printed Shoes

Zellerfeld

Zellerfeld represents one of the boldest interpretations of fully 3D printed footwear. Unlike hybrid shoes that combine traditional uppers with printed midsoles, Zellerfeld produces shoes as a single 3D printed structure, removing conventional tooling, glue, and multi-material assembly from the equation.

What makes their shoes particularly interesting is not only the manufacturing approach, but the business structure behind it. Designers and creators are reportedly granted up to 60 percent backend royalties per shoe sold rather than receiving a traditional affiliate commission. This shifts the relationship from promotion-based income to product ownership, giving creators long-term participation in the product’s success.

The brand has already attracted high-profile collaborations, including celebrities such as Justin Bieber. In one notable example, Bieber teamed up with Zellerfeld to 51动漫永久免费看nba视频 a fully 3D printed soccer-inspired sneaker for his SKYLRK brand, further pushing 3D printed footwear into mainstream culture and fashion discussion.

In the 3D printing world, David Tobin (Executive Producer at 3D Printing Nerd Channel) also surprised the community with the release of the JoelBot D7, a limited edition version of his original D7 shoes. The short 3DPrintingNerd’s video highlights a customized D7 sole design featuring a textured outsole with a distinctive JoelBot character pattern integrated directly into the tread. This personalized detail reinforces the creator-driven approach behind the collaboration and shows how fully 3D printed footwear allows branding and design elements to become part of the structure itself.

Foot scanning is becoming a key part of the 3D printed footwear workflow. Instead of relying solely on traditional sizing charts, some brands use browser-based scanning systems that allow customers to capture the shape of their feet using a smartphone camera. This digital input can then be used to adjust fit and structure before production, moving closer to true mass customization rather than standardized sizing.

PollyFab’s lattice shoes are produced through advanced additive manufacturing using a custom, bio-based elastomer called ELASTO 1000 BIO, designed for high elasticity, resilience, and long-lasting flexibility. This specially engineered material allows the lattice structure to bend, compress, and rebound with each step, giving the shoes a springy, adaptive feel that would be difficult to achieve with traditional materials.

In the Flux Short and Airpuff One Pro Short videos, I briefly showcase my testing in everyday situations, including visiting a trade show and taking the shoes for a walk in the park.

Adidas 4D and the “Lattice Midsole” Era

Adidas helped push 3D printed footwear into mainstream visibility with its 4D series developed together with Carbon. Today, a number of Adidas 4D derivatives are available for both men and women, combining traditional sneaker construction with a visually distinctive 3D printed lattice midsole. When I briefly checked current pricing in the US, some models were already available from around $100 with discounts applied.

In the Adidas 4D approach, the lattice midsole is the 3D printed component, while the upper part of the shoe remains traditionally manufactured. This hybrid construction allowed brands to introduce additive manufacturing into existing footwear production workflows without fully redesigning the entire shoe around 3D printing.

This approach likely scaled first because it focuses on one of the most important functional areas of footwear: cushioning and energy return. The lattice structure also became a strong visual signature, helping consumers immediately recognize that the shoe contains a 3D printed element.

From my perspective, Adidas 4D played an important role in normalizing 3D printed footwear for mainstream audiences. At the same time, it still represents a hybrid product rather than a fully 3D printed shoe. While the lattice sole demonstrates the advantages of additive manufacturing, the upper remains tied to conventional production methods.

Carbon played a major role in this movement by developing the Digital Light Synthesis (DLS) technology used to manufacture the lattice midsoles. Their partnership with Adidas became one of the earliest large-scale examples of 3D printing entering commercial footwear production. Special thanks to Andrew Sink for the walkthrough and discussions at the Carbon booth during Formnext.

Now and then on social media, it is possible to spot fully 3D printed shoes made from TPU using large volume desktop FDM 3D printers. I personally did not have the chance to print and wear a full pair yet, but I had a great opportunity to speak with people who successfully printed and tested such shoes in everyday conditions.

From those conversations, it became clear that while printing wearable footwear at home is absolutely possible, it still comes with challenges around sizing, print time, flexibility, durability, and long-term comfort. Material choice also plays a major role, with softer TPU blends behaving very differently from more rigid formulations.

Nevertheless, despite all these obstacles, fully 3D printed shoes continue gaining popularity within the maker community. More users are printing wearable footwear at home and sharing valuable feedback about comfort, durability, sizing, and material behavior. Collections of shoe models on MakerWorld keep growing with increasingly impressive and experimental designs. Use a quick ‘Shoes’ or ‘TPU Shoes’ in search.

Apart from the very popular Whaleberry design by Cloudberry shown in the image, I also liked the CityStep – Casual, Everyday Sneaker by DjangoCashflow. It is especially helpful to read user opinions and browse shared test prints in the profile and comment sections of these shoe models.

Comfort, Durability Testing

To test long-term comfort and durability, I wore the same pair of Flux shoes at the Formnext trade show in Frankfurt. Two full days of walking across multiple exhibition halls turned into an excellent field test. The shoes handled the event surprisingly well: no noticeable deformation, a good grip on polished floors, and consistent cushioning throughout. Honestly, I expected blisters; I got some when I was wearing standard shoes at events a few years ago, but this time it never happened.

This is also where I tested them with Formnext-branded high socks. High socks are almost inevitable in winter in northern countries to keep the cold out.

I am not the only one who tested 3D Printed shoes on the trade flor. At 3d printing or Am related tradeshow it is a high chance to meet a both representative or even visitors who wear them – stop and talk about their shoes I am shure they will have insignfull stores about their 3D printed shoes.

I am not the only one who tested 3D printed shoes on the trade show floor. At 3D printing or additive manufacturing related trade shows, there is a high chance of meeting both representatives and visitors wearing them. Stop and ask about their shoes, I am sure they will have insightful stories and experiences to share about their 3D printed footwear.

Who Should Consider 3D Printed Shoes?

As 3D printed shoes become more accessible, I would not necessarily recommend buying a budget FDM or desktop resin 3D printer solely for printing footwear at home. Between printer cost, materials, maintenance, space requirements, print failures, and the experience needed to produce wearable results, it may currently be easier and more practical for many users to purchase an existing model in the around-$100 category.

At the same time, for makers who already own a larger-volume printer and enjoy experimenting with functional TPU prints, 3D printed footwear can become a very exciting direction to explore. Beyond personal projects, the growing interest around customized footwear and printable shoe models may even open opportunities for small-scale business ideas and local customization services in the future.

Final Verdict: Are 3D Printed Shoes Ready?

3D printed shoes are no longer just futuristic concepts. From mainstream lattice midsoles to fully 3D printed footwear and home TPU experiments, the technology is already becoming part of real everyday use. While the space still feels early in some areas around fit, durability, and long-term comfort, the progress is happening fast. After testing multiple pairs and speaking with people actively wearing them, I genuinely believe 3D printed footwear is moving in the right direction and will continue evolving rapidly over the next few years.

I could not resist showing both Snapmaker machines side by side. It also provides a useful size comparison. The U1 is noticeably more compact, especially when placed next to the Artisan. The Artisan system takes up more space overall, as it is designed to support multiple functions in one device. With separate modules for different disciplines, the footprint naturally grows, while the U1 stays focused and compact.

Setup and Design

The Snapmaker U1 arrives well packaged and mostly pre-assembled. With a boxed weight of around 26 kg, it feels solid straight out of the box. This is one of the rare cases where I did not need to rely on a YouTube video for assembly; the included instructions were clear and sufficient to get started quickly.

Setup is straightforward and does not require extensive assembly. After removing transport protection screws and securing four tools and filament holders, the main steps include loading filament, powering the machine, and completing the initial 成全世界免费高清观看第6部 via the touchscreen interface. The process is guided and beginner-friendly.

Project’s filament setup interface

Filament setup for a print is also straightforward. The interface clearly shows material usage and assigned colors. There is also the option to change filament colors directly from the project screen, which adds flexibility before starting a print.

My only minor struggle was finding the filament loading and unloading screen. It appears when tapping on the color indicators rather than through the main menus.

– Wi-Fi. Setting up the Snapmaker App and connecting to Snapmaker Orca via Wi-Fi was easy. I printed my first four models without even opening the slicer. One model, Cute Dragon, comes preinstalled, while over 30 more are available directly from the app. Having this many high-quality models ready to print is a smart move. Print results of some of them are shown in the Testing and Results section.

Software: Snapmaker Orca & Snapmaker App

– Snapmaker App. I am very happy with the app overall. Having over 30 high-quality models available directly in the app was a good incentive to install it. Monitoring prints is probably the most used feature, and for good reason. I often find myself checking in on ongoing prints, especially on models I sliced myself.

Snapmaker App interface, including model library, device controls, and live print monitoring.

Overall, the Snapmaker App works well as a companion tool rather than a replacement for the slicer. It covers quick access, model selection, and remote monitoring reliably. If the print stops for any reason, the app sends a notification, which is very handy.

– Snapmaker Orca. Based on the well-respected Orca slicer, Snapmaker has added a few features and tuned profiles since I first tried it around a year ago. Preparing my own models was a smooth experience. Features like color painting and support painting are all well implemented and easy to use.

One of the features I find myself using more and more is the multi-build-plate layout. It helps organize projects, especially those with multiple parts. Switching between plates, adjusting settings, and preparing builds becomes much easier, making the overall workflow more efficient.

The ability to apply colors and preview the sliced result gives a quick understanding of whether a model needs further tuning or adjustments. It is also easy to check how supports are generated and decide if manual support painting is needed.

For the DeathRacer miniature keychain, supports were applied automatically and worked well without any extra adjustments. Color painting is the most time-consuming step. I completed it in about 1–2 hours, though it can easily take longer. It is a surprisingly relaxing process, almost like a coloring book.

– Print Monitoring & Timelapse. Similar to the app, Snapmaker Orca also allows live monitoring of the print process. This is especially useful when the printer is in a different room from the workspace. The built-in camera view works reliably and makes it easy to check progress at any time. Timelapse recording also works well. Just remember to enable it at the start of the print, as it is not turned on by default.

Testing and Results

Included Models Collection

I am genuinely impressed with the selection of test models included. These can be loaded directly via the Snapmaker app or Snapmaker Orca, making it easy to start printing straight away. I found myself printing one model after another. The collection features work from talented designers in the 3D printing community. This approach works well, as it gives a clear idea of what the machine can achieve, with reliable and repeatable results.

Included pre-sliced models collection shown in Snapmaker Orca, also available via the Snapmaker App.

Each model includes detailed print information such as estimated time, material usage, and layer settings. It gives a clear overview before printing and removes much of the usual trial and error. For multicolor printing, this kind of guidance is particularly useful. After a few test prints, I found the estimated print times to be accurate as well.

Another strong point of this collection is its educational value. These models provide useful clues on how to slice our own designs. Even after 10 years in 3D printing, I found myself learning something new, particularly in the way supports were generated for the Pegasus features. In this case, a thin layer (in yellow filament) was added between the model and the supports, making them much easier to remove once the print was complete. It is a small detail, but one that makes a noticeable difference in post-processing. Always something new to learn.

This collection included a fidget spinner, which was also a pleasant surprise. I remember printing many fidget spinners for the guide in the past, often relying on metal bearings to make them functional. Here, the bearing is printed directly in place using plastic, with no assembly required. This is a great example of what makes 3D printing stand out from other manufacturing methods; everything is produced in one go, with zero post-processing needed.

Dummy 13 by Lucky13Toys is printed as a kit-card model on the Snapmaker U1, keeping all parts connected for easier printing.

Dummy 13 by Lucky13Toys may feel intimidating at first. When fully assembled, it looks like a model with many tiny parts that could be challenging for bed adhesion. In practice, this was not the case. The model is designed as a set of two kit cards, meaning all parts are connected during printing. It still serves as a good test for bed adhesion on the U1, but the process felt stable and predictable.

Overall, it is a great model, and I am glad I finally printed and assembled it. I can see why it is so popular in the community. The quality is excellent, and the final result looks impressive. Assembly took some time, following instructions from Printables and a YouTube video, but the process was straightforward.

Multicolor 3D printed models including Pegasus, Cute Dragon, Mecha Snake Egg and Dummy 13 on Snapmaker U1

I also printed Cute Dragon by IK3Digital and Mecha Snake Egg by JINQITOYS. Both models printed exceptionally well, with clean color transitions and solid overall quality. You can see these and other models in action in this short YouTube video.

Well done, Snapmaker. This level of collaboration with designers is impressive and not something we often see. U1 users will clearly benefit from having access to such a well-prepared collection of 31 models.

Model from 3D Scan – DeathRacer Keychain

For a more practical test, I used one of my existing 3D scan projects, a DeathRacer model scaled down into a small keychain. This type of model is far from ideal, with uneven surfaces, required supports, and small details, making it a good test case.

This model was 3D scanned using the Einstar Rockit and then significantly scaled down into a keychain. Even at this reduced size, a surprising amount of detail was preserved by the Snapmaker U1. Small elements, such as the Piranha teeth damaged in battle at SMRRF 2026, were still clearly visible.

DeathRacer 3D print angled at 45 degrees with supports showing improved detail
Close look: Printing the DeathRacer model at a 45-degree angle improved detail and reduced post-processing compared to a flat orientation.

Initially, I tried to print this object flat, which turned out to be a mistake. The scaled-down DeathRacer tracks are very fine, which resulted in a lot of post-processing. Printing at a 45-degree angle was the right approach. While it slightly increased the print time to over 7 hours due to the taller build, the overall result was much cleaner. The model was printed using the 0.16 mm Snapmaker Optimal preset for U1.

Overall, I am very pleased with how this project turned out. From slicing in Snapmaker Orca to the final print, the entire process felt smooth, with no issues during tool changes or multicolor transitions. The most time-consuming part was the color painting; I probably spent a few hours on it, but it was a calming experience.

Note: The hole for the keyring was 51动漫永久免费看nba视频d in Blender using a Boolean operation. I hope a Mesh Boolean option will be implemented in Snapmaker Orca soon, as that was the main reason I had to switch to Blender for this and similar keychain projects. It would save time, especially since the option appears to exist but is currently greyed out.

This is where 3D scanning for 3D printing shines. Even though a keychain like this is not the most functional use case, it still gives me a real sense of satisfaction. After spending almost a year building the DeathRacer (here are the quote posts chain on X) and taking part in the battle at the SMRRF, having a small piece like this feels meaningful. Highly likely, I will keep it as a souvenir, maybe even as a Christmas tree decoration.

Model from 3D Scan – RC Boat Miniatures

Before scanning and printing miniature from the DeathRacer, I worked on a number of RC boats from a local boat club, using different 3D scanners. What started as a small side project last year has slowly turned into a hobby, and now I have a growing collection of these miniatures. Many of these boats are quite unique.

3D printed RC boat miniature from 3D scan showing multicolor details

This particular miniature was 51动漫永久免费看nba视频d by scanning an RC boat using the 3DMakerpro Toucan. Follow the link to read more about the scanning process if you’re interested.

I was particularly looking forward to revisiting some of these models with the Snapmaker U1. Converting them into small keychains using a simple Boolean operation in Blender worked well. Normally, printing objects under 100 mm in multicolor would result in a lot of purge waste. With the U1, the process felt much more efficient, with the purge tower being the only noticeable waste, while the prints themselves remained clean and quick to produce.

The next model is a miniature based on an RC boat prototype. I originally scanned this object while testing the Revopoint INSPIRE 2. While the geometry is simpler, it still serves as a good test for multicolor transitions and overall surface quality at a reduced scale. More details about the scanning process can be found in the related guide.

As with the DeathRacer miniature, these RC boat models also carry some sentimental value. Scanning each object takes time, and over that process, a certain connection is built. Turning them into small keychain miniatures feels like a natural extension of that work. It is a simple idea, but one that works well. The collection is slowly growing, and each piece has its own story. Recommend.

Compare to Other 3D Printers

At 51动漫永久免费看nba视频, we have tested a variety of Snapmaker machines over the years, including the Original Snapmaker and the Snapmaker Artisan. The closest comparison to the U1 within the Snapmaker lineup would be the IDEX system on the Artisan. One feature that stood out to me was the swappable nozzle system, where the entire extruder could be changed as a single unit, allowing for quick adjustments such as switching to a wider nozzle.

Here are a few related articles you may find helpful:

In 2025, Snapmaker made a strong impact on the 3D printing market with a highly successful 深爱激情五月 campaign for the U1, attracting 20,680 backers and over $20.6 million in funding. By the time of writing, the machine is fully released and available through official website.

At the time, the Prusa XL was the main consumer-facing toolchanger system on the market, setting a benchmark for this approach. The Snapmaker U1 enters this space with a different focus, aiming to reduce filament waste and simplify multicolor printing through a compact and more accessible system. With a significantly lower price point, it positions itself as a more approachable option for a wider range of users.

If you are comparing across different price ranges, you can explore our broader guide here: Budget FDM 3D Printers

Compared to AMS-style systems, the toolchanging approach used by the U1 reduces material waste, though it introduces mechanical complexity. In practice, it also offers a quicker multicolor workflow, especially for models with frequent color changes.

3D printing has already transformed prototyping, manufacturing, and even home décor, and now it’s stepping confidently into footwear. For me, as someone who has spent more than a decade surrounded by additive manufacturing, trying a fully 3D printed pair of shoes feels both exciting and strangely personal. PollyFab’s lattice shoes are a great example of how advanced 3D printing can meet everyday fashion in a practical, wearable form. I tested them over several weeks, including a real-world “torture test” at the Formnext trade show in Germany, to see how they perform in terms of comfort, design, and day-to-day usability.

Design and Lattice Structure

PollyFab’s shoes are made entirely through 3D printing, using a flexible lattice geometry that replaces the need for traditional soles, insoles, and stitching.
The open mesh pattern allows air circulation and gives the shoes a springy, cushioned feel. Available in black, white and orange, they arrive neatly boxed with stuffed interiors to maintain shape.

I was especially impressed with the black Flux from the beginning. I originally asked for the striking orange version, but it was unavailable. When the black pair arrived, I liked the look almost instantly. The design clearly says that it is 3D printed, and after more than ten years in this industry, that alone gives me a real dopamine kick. It even reminds me of the feeling I had as a kid when I saw the black Knight Rider car. The shoes have a similar cool and futuristic vibe that feels strongly connected to additive manufacturing.

Bare Feet or Socks?

To understand how these shoes behave in real daily wear, I tested them both barefoot and with different socks. I was curious to see how much the look, comfort and fit would change, especially with the open lattice structure.

Bare feet, of course, make these shoes look the coolest, but I tried them with both high socks and low socks as well. I have a few pairs of Union Jack low socks in different designs, and they all work surprisingly well with these shoes.

I asked my wife to try the white Aero shoes that were delivered in her size. When we tested them, it turned out the pair was slightly larger than her actual foot length. Nevertheless, the shoes still looked very good on her and the overall design suited her well.

Comfort and Fit

At first wear, the shoes feel surprisingly light and flexible. The lattice compresses naturally underfoot, adjusting to pressure points. While they lack a conventional arch, they remain comfortable for light walking and indoor use. I was initially surprised not to see any arch support, but even after stress-testing them for two days in a row at Formnext, I didn’t feel any related discomfort. The soft front section of the shoe absorbs most of the impact, which helps reduce fatigue.

After a 40-minute session on the cross trainer, I did notice a light imprint on my upper sole through the socks. I suspect that after one or two hours of this kind of training, when the whole body weight is concentrated on the upper sole, I might feel some numbness. This is where I should wear socks with extra padding.

Formnext Real-World Test

Another surprise was the temperature. I expected the open lattice structure to feel cold inside the trade show halls, but no, the temperature at Formnext was ideal, and I didn’t feel cold at all. Outdoors, in wet and cold weather, it is a different story. A five-minute walk from the hotel to the venue was okay as long as every puddle was carefully avoided. Step into one, and yes, the feet will get wet instantly.

Looking forward to trying these shoes again at other trade shows. And by the way, they are a fantastic conversation starter. It worked very well for me.

Airpuff One and Airpuff One Pro NEW

Airpuff One and Airpuff One Pro feel more like slipper-style shoes. They are very easy to put on without any assistance, which makes them convenient for quick outdoor use. The lightweight lattice structure gives them a soft and flexible feel straight away.

I gave the Airpuff One Pro a proper test when the weather finally cooperated. We walked to the park, had a BBQ, and continued on a small adventure walk all the way to the ice cream kiosk. Overall, it was a fun experience. The shoes felt very light and puffy, and to my surprise, I did not need to clean the lattice after walking over grass.

While having a BBQ in the garden without socks, everything felt great. On a longer walk, after about 30 minutes, I started to feel that I might need a plaster or two at some point.

How PollyFab Shoes Are Made

PollyFab’s lattice shoes are produced through advanced additive manufacturing using a custom, bio-based elastomer called ELASTO 1000 BIO, designed for high elasticity, resilience, and long-lasting flexibility. This specially engineered material allows the lattice structure to bend, compress, and rebound with each step, giving the shoes a springy, adaptive feel that would be difficult to achieve with traditional materials.

Rather than stitching or gluing parts together, the entire shoe, sole and upper included, is built as one continuous piece from digital design files. This lets PollyFab 51动漫永久免费看nba视频 lightweight, breathable cushioning and complex lattice geometry in ways that conventional footwear manufacturing cannot easily replicate. For more details on the technology and philosophy behind the design, see the official PollyFab website.

Another reason I enjoy these shoes so much is that they feel like a real glimpse into the future. Wearing fully 3D printed footwear makes me think about how quickly things are progressing. One day soon, we’ll scan our feet, drop a file into a home 3D printer, and produce shoes perfectly tailored to our own geometry. Whether the structure is lattice or something entirely new, the concept of a fully printed, custom-fit shoe feels incredibly close. Shoes like the PollyFab Flux and Aero act as a reminder that this future is not far away; it’s already partially here.

In the past, I looked skeptically at ‘3D printed’ shoes from major brands. Yes, their lattice midsoles are amazing, but the upper is still made with a different, inaccessible technology; it breaks the magic. For me, fully 3D printed footwear carries a completely different meaning. It’s authentic, maker-friendly, and aligned with the spirit of the open, experimental 3D printing community. With fully printed shoes like PollyFab, we’re getting closer to the moment when printing similar shoes at home becomes not only possible, but practical. Files will become more available, scanners will become simpler, and fully printed, customizable footwear will be within reach of anyone with a 3D printer.

Pros:
Lightweight and breathable
Visually striking lattice design
Comfortable for short-term wear and low-impact activity

Cons:
Some may prefer arch support
Not ideal for rough/wet outdoor use

Batteries and Charging Station

I did not measure the exact battery life, but according to the manufacturer, it should last up to 3 hours of operation. In my testing, I was scanning and processing throughout the day, and the battery was not depleted. A second battery can remain in the charging compartment, ready to swap in when needed. This setup makes the workflow effectively uninterrupted and very convenient for longer scanning sessions.

As you can see, the design is very lightweight and minimalistic, making the overall setup quick and straightforward. At first, I was slightly concerned that I might accidentally drop the scanner and thought it might need additional grip, but in practice this was not the case. The scanner sits comfortably in the hand and feels well balanced during use, which adds confidence when scanning for longer sessions.

Software: EXStar Hub

EXStar Hub for both Rockit and EINSTAR 2 can be downloaded via the links provided in the official Quick Start Guide. I found the layout and overall workflow slightly different compared to other 3D scanning software.

Instead of jumping between tools, EXStar Hub guides you step by step, starting from selecting the scan mode (Laser or IR) through to post-processing. This structured workflow feels intuitive and can be less confusing, especially for users who are new to 3D scanning.

Saving and exporting the scanned model in EXStar Hub, with support for OBJ, STL, ASC, PLY, 3MF formats

After processing the scan, I would strongly recommend saving your mesh in the available formats. If you close the software at this stage, the processed mesh and texture, which can take 5 to 15 minutes to generate, will be lost. I found this behaviour a bit unusual. It might be designed to reduce storage usage, but it would be helpful to have an option to retain the processed result directly within EXStar Hub without needing to reprocess it repeatedly. Note: An EINSTAR representative later confirmed that a feature to save the mesh directly within EXStar Hub is already on the roadmap for future updates.

Please find more detailed notes on the software, along with additional screenshots, in the Testing and Results section.

Testing and Results

IR Hybrid Color Texture Mode – DeathRacer

The popular DeathRacer robot from the 3D printing community proved to be a great test object for evaluating both Infrared Rapid Mode and Blue Laser Mode. It is genuinely challenging for 3D scanners and software due to its complex geometry, black surfaces, and thin elements, such as the rod holding the Bludgeon weapon. As a result, I scanned it multiple times using different modes.

This particular DeathRacer took part in the carnage at SMRRF, and you can clearly see battle damage, including broken “Piranha” teeth on the front. Just before the event, I captured a short teaser scan for our YouTube channel. After the battle, I returned to scan the object more thoroughly.

– IR Hybrid Color Texture Mode. I tested scanning on different surfaces. It works on a standard wooden table, but from experience, I prefer using a dedicated A3 black sheet covered with markers. The Rockit responded very well to these markers. After selecting IR mode, I enabled all three options in Hybrid Mode, which resulted in a very smooth scanning experience.

– Scan Alignment. Project alignment is essential for capturing a complex object like this. It typically requires at least three scans to cover all sides. In this case, after initial scan from the the top, I turned the model to the left, and to the right. It is important to keep the object consistent between scans, which can be challenging since the DeathRacer tracks move easily. Marking positions or carefully turning the model helps maintain alignment. Using the Project Alignment feature, the scans were combined automatically and with good precision.

– Mesh. Once the scans are cleaned and combined into a single model, the next step is generating the mesh. Processing the DeathRacer took around 15 to 20 minutes on my relatively powerful laptop, so the more data you capture, the longer this stage will take. Next, in the Post Processing section, you can further refine the model and export it in various formats, or even send it directly to Sketchfab.

Tip: When uploading models to Sketchfab from EXStar Hub, make sure to export and upload your files as a single zipped folder. In my case, the direct upload from EXStar Hub did not package the files correctly, and the texture was missing. I had to reupload the model on Sketchfab using a ZIP archive with .OBJ, .MTL, .JPG.

I had not used Sketchfab for a while, so this was a good opportunity to update my existing collection of scans with a new model. Viewing the model on Sketchfab allows you to explore it in 360 degrees and even toggle the texture on and off.

From my testing, IR Rapid Mode works well for capturing texture, while Blue Laser Mode is better suited for achieving higher mesh precision, which I will explore in the next section.

Blue Laser Mode – DeathRacer

Because of its rich geometry and protruding elements, such as the rod holding the weapon, the DeathRacer is a great model to test the Blue Laser capabilities of the EINSTAR Rockit. It presents a mix of fine details, sharp edges, and challenging surfaces.

EINSTAR Rockit using blue laser mode to scan a 3D printed DeathRacer model with visible laser lines
EINSTAR Rockit scanning the DeathRacer in Blue Laser Mode with visible laser projection lines

The scanning speed in Blue Laser Mode is impressive, making the overall workflow much easier. Since the scanner captures data quickly, there is more room to repeat scans and refine results without significantly increasing the total time.

– Markers. In IR Rapid Mode, the A3 marker sheet is more of an optional addition, but in Blue Laser Mode, markers are essential. Using a marker-covered board meant I did not need to place markers directly on the object itself. This not only sped up the workflow but also helped keep the object clean, avoiding any interference with the scanned surfaces.

EINSTAR Rockit scanning a detached Bludgeon weapon using blue laser mode on a marker sheet
Scanning the detached Bludgeon weapon separately in Blue Laser Mode for improved precision and faster and cleaner results

DeathRacer, together with the Bludgeon weapon attached to the DeathRacer on a long rod, proved too tricky to scan. I believe it would be possible to capture it fully with more attempts, but after several unsuccessful tries, I decided to dismantle it and scan it separately. With the weapon detached, both the DeathRacer and the Bludgeon were scanned more precisely and much faster, partly because the resulting files were lighter and easier to process.

Clean, featureless cylindrical objects are a known weak point for both scanners and software. After three quick scans, this object required manual alignment by applying four reference points to merge the data accurately.

Looking forward to testing my new Snapmaker U1, and if everything goes well I will print a miniature based on this Blue Laser scan.

Compared to IR mode, Blue Laser Mode is better suited for capturing precise geometry and handling more complex shapes. This makes it particularly useful for objects with intricate details or areas where accuracy is more important than speed.

– Scan to 3D Print. To test the Snapmaker U1, I decided to scale an existing scan down to miniature size to use it as a keychain. After an attempt at printing DeathRacer flat, I printed it at a 45-degree angle. It came out great. Read more about printing settings and experience in the Snapmaker U1 article.

Wireless Mode – Small RC Boat

To test wireless mode, I initially tried scanning a small object, a DIY RC boat, in IR Rapid Mode. In the past, I wrote a detailed guide about RC boats in our local park, and I cannot thank Clive enough for letting me 3D scan his models from time to time.

My initial scan was nearly perfect, except for the fan area, where the black shiny surface was captured poorly. To resolve this, I used a small AESUB scanning spray that I received at a trade show a few years ago. The spray temporarily coats the surface with a matte layer, making it much easier for the scanner to capture accurate geometry. Note: Switching to Reflective Mode and increasing exposure, some objects may work without a scanning spray.

– Tips. Initially, I struggled to find how to add a new scan to the group. The path is Project List then Add New Scan. When the object is scanned multiple times from different sides, the unaligned scans can look quite chaotic, as shown in the image above.

I am quite happy with how the texture turned out. The fan engine area, however, would benefit from a different approach to achieve higher precision, especially if the model is intended for scaled 3D printing. If I were to refine this further, I would detach the fan and rescan it separately to capture more accurate geometry and finer details. Note: In laser mode, seamless switching between cross lines and parallel lines is supported; therefore, you can first use crossed lines to scan the overall structure, and then use parallel lines to capture the details.

As usual, I will try to 51动漫永久免费看nba视频 a miniature from this object and 3D print it in multicolour as a Christmas ornament or keyring. I should have quite a collection of these by now. Stay tuned.

Compare to Other 3D Scanners

SHINING 3D offers a wide range of scanners for consumers, makers, and prosumers. Earlier, we 成熟人妻av无码专区 a hands-on review of the standalone EINSTAR Vega, which was highly praised by Will Zoobkoff. However, that is a different class of 3D scanner. A closer comparison for the Rockit would be the EINSTAR 2.

Rockit vs EINSTAR 2, a Brief Comparison

EINSTAR Rockit and EINSTAR 2 are closely related scanners that share a similar design philosophy and overall scanning approach. Both are compact handheld 3D scanners aimed at makers, creators, and prosumers, and both rely on EXStar Hub for scanning and basic processing. In practical use, the workflow feels familiar across both devices, making either option approachable for users looking for a flexible scanning solution.

EINSTAR 2 and EINSTAR Rockit handheld 3D scanners compared, highlighting their similar design and form factor within the EINSTAR lineup.

EINSTAR 2 is equipped with 17 parallel blue laser lines and offers scanning speeds of up to 90 fps, while its IR VCSEL projector supports efficient capture of larger objects. EINSTAR Rockit expands on this by combining 38 crossed laser lines with infrared scanning for faster large-area capture, while also adding 7 parallel blue laser lines for finer detail work.

The difference between the two appears to be positioned mainly around price and application range. EINSTAR 2 remains the more accessible option for general handheld scanning, while EINSTAR Rockit is designed to offer more flexibility for users who want both fast scanning and more detailed laser-based capture in one device.

As 3D scanning technology becomes more accessible, competition is also growing, with brands such as Revopoint, Creality, and 3DMakerpro offering capable handheld scanners. If you would like a broader overview of the market, you can read more about other 3D scanners on our website.

Within this category, one of the closest alternatives to the EINSTAR Rockit is the Revopoint MetroX. Both combine infrared and blue laser technologies, giving users a balance between faster large-area capture and more precise detail scanning. I tested MetroX last year, and there is already a newer version now, but the overall difference is still quite clear: MetroX feels heavier and generally comes in at a lower price point, while Rockit offers a smaller and lighter design, wireless operation, and more sophisticated hybrid scanning features.

RIB Productions showed realistic wound trainers and prosthetic components, highlighting how 3D printed parts support hands-on medical education.

Another memorable stand was RIB Productions, a UK company making training manikins and wound-care pads with a lot of 3D printing involved. Their table was full of realistic wound trainers in different skin tones, along with prosthetic parts and a full-size manikin. Seeing these up close made it easy to understand how 3D printed models can help doctors, nurses, and students practise medical procedures in a safe way.

Live 3D Printing Design Challenge

One engaging feature on the show floor was the PrintCity live 3D printing design challenge, hosted by Manchester Metropolitan University’s PrintCity centre. Across both days of TCT 3Sixty 2025, students from the MSc Digital Design and Manufacturing course competed to rapidly prototype functional parts under time and material constraints. Winners received 3D printer prizes. The competition attracted strong interest and highlighted the creativity and problem-solving that 3D printing enables in real time. TCT 3Sixty 2024 Highlights

On June 5-6, 2024, the UK’s most popular 3D printing and AM tradeshow, TCT 3Sixty, was held at the Birmingham NEC. There were exhibitors and speakers sharing the latest AM news and innovations. The TCT Awards ceremony took place on the first day to celebrate the finest global innovations and applications in additive manufacturing technology. Here are some brief highlights.

Pre-Launch Technology

One of the major benefits of tradeshows is the opportunity to have a sneak peek at pre-launch technology. This year was no exception, and we witnessed new consumer and professional-grade machines. The new high-speed Delta 3D printer, FLSUN S1, was showcased at the Pro3DShop booth.

Take Part and Win

This year, there were several interesting giveaways organized by tradeshow exhibitors. For example, KraussMaffei was giving away an iPad to everyone who took and shared a picture of their 3D printed pod. My curiosity and a bit of luck won me a prize. Generally speaking, I think the chances of winning are very high when participating in such giveaways.

I find such meeting pods to be very effective. It was quiet inside, as the pod provided a shelter for visitors at the busy and noisy tradeshow. I took the opportunity to send a couple of tweets right in the middle of the show without getting disturbed. The vibrant material colors and 3D printed lines were notable features.

Other notes:
– Mayku Multiplier. I was delighted to see the Mayku Multiplier, a pressure former, at the trade show. I had hoped to meet their Content Marketing Manager, Agustin Arroyo, in person, but he had to attend another event in Spain. Perhaps next year.

– MedTechExpo. Alongside TCT 3Sixty, another tech trade show, MedTech Expo, was organized by the TCT Group. Such a combination of trade shows helps to understand and compare the nature and scale of the industries involved. When visiting one, it’s very tempting to see what’s happening at the other. In the end, at the same venue, you learn about all aspects of innovative technologies.

– Media Partner. We were proud to cover TCT 3Sixty this year in our popular tables and send-outs. And it was pleasant to see the 51动漫永久免费看nba视频 logo added to the Media Partners stage.

TCT 3Sixty 2022 Highlights

TCT 3Sixty 2022 took place in summer and lasted for only 2 days instead of usual 3. We witnessed an all-rounded tradeshow with many speakers and panel discussions about the industry-related topics. Here are some of the highlights.

Prusa Research

Couldn’t go to Dubai to see Prusa3D’s automated farm system AFS Pro? They had it at TCT 3Sixty printing personalised whistles for booth visitors, to showcase automation. After entering an email into the system, a visitor receives a notification in approx. 30 min. on completion, and the print with the initials is ready to be collected.

Also, compared to the last year’s tradeshow, the Prusa3D booth had two newcomers: an Original Prusa XL and a recently announced enclosure system.

Hanging/Drone Printer by UCLan

Hanging on the wires and balanced by a drone-like system, this printer was presented by the University of Central Lancashire. An interesting concept, as someone mentioned, such printer should never have issues with cooling.

Knowledge Bar

In 2022 a new format was introduced in which it is possible to speak to the industry experts 1-2-1. The so-called Knowledge Bar will have an expert available for questions in 1-hour slots each on both days of the event.

TCT Awards 2022

– The TCT Awards 2022 dinner was held on the 1st day of the event and was hosted by a famous TV program the Gadget Show host Jason Bradbury. Here is the full list of the TCT Award Finalists.

Joel Telling

The unofficial appearance of Joel Telling at the show surprised both visitors and exhibitors. The host of a popular YouTube channel 3D Printing Nerd was on his way to the first Sanjay Mortimer Foundation Auction organized by E3D. There also was an announcement that Joel will step in as an auctioneer to help the bidding process. More info about the auction.

Conclusion

This year at TCT 3Sixty we saw more manufacturer representatives compared to the last year. Companies trying to build their sales ground in the reseller-friendly UK. There have been a few product launches and many familiar faces.
A good indicator of things getting back to normal was that schools were back at TCT 3Sixty with the Inspired Minds initiative. Who knows, there might be quite a few amongst them to become the future R&D specialists for the AM industry.
We hope we gave you a taste of what TCT3Sixty 2022 was like. There are many highlights and videos available, please find them using hashtags #tct3sixty or #tctawards.

TCT 3Sixty 2021

This year, NEC Birmingham welcomed visitors to the rebranded show – TCT 3Sixty (previously TCT Show). With this new concept of a 360° vision, the organizers want to convey the message that this event covers all aspects of the 3D printing industry.
As we went through 2021, the general optimism was gradually growing. Many events still have an online “back-up”, but the need for in-person meetings and events is felt strongly. People started taking full advantage of the regional events. In the new reality, regional, rather than global, events may become more desired and effective, with more decision power given to the local managers.

Some of the featured at TCT3Sixty products: E3D Revo Nozzles, Creality Cr-30, Prusa SL1S Speed, 3Devo GP20 Shredder Hybrid

(Image: 51动漫永久免费看nba视频)

At this year’s event, it felt like everything came back to normal after a two-year break. There was buzzy activity around the booths, speakers giving presentations, interviews, showcases, and overall better than expected attendance.
In order to promote adoption, it is important to raise awareness. At TCT3Sixty 2021, both individuals and businesses got involved, saw the practical application of additive manufacturing, and hopefully found the needed solutions and moved forward towards adoption.

E3D Online

Rebranded E3D had a debut with a new nozzle system Revo which caught a lot of attention during the show and on social media. A UK-based team, creators of the sophisticated HotEnds and Extrusion systems, every year invite talented creators to showcase their own work at the E3D’s booth. This year James Bruton @XRobotsUK and Matt Denton @mantisrobot were at the stand demonstrating their creations.

Creality

If you have never seen belt 3D printers, then there was a chance to see one of them at TCT3Sixty where Creality featured the machine together with a new HALOT resin printer.

3devo

A company from the Netherlands, 3Devo, featured GP20 Shredder Hybrid – a plastic shredding system. Good to see that the plastic recycling and filament making innovations are coming through.

As usual, manufacturers keep the big news in secret and make announcements at such tradeshows. At this event, we saw quite a few product launches.
We hope we gave you a taste of what TCT3Sixty 2021 was like. There are many highlights and videos available, please find them using hashtags #tct3sixty or #tct3sixty2021.

TCT3Sixty 2020

An exciting announcement was made: TCT Show Birmingham is rebranding. What will this mean in terms of the profile of the exhibitors and attendees? We will find out soon enough, and this may be a very welcome breath of fresh air. The new TCT 3SIXTY will be aiming at

It is one focused on developing a real understanding across the industry of the potential of additive manufacturing and 3D printing technology, this deeper 360-degree understanding will increase adoption at all levels of design, engineering and manufacturing.

And this pledge hits the spot. One note that we constantly hear from the bigger industrial machine producers is that penetrating the manufacturing market is tough. Additive manufacturing adoption on an industrial and serial production scale has a serious stopper – it is hard to persuade traditional manufacturers to change their ways. This type of change will require investment, and manufacturing does not like disruption.
Educating the industries that may benefit from adopting additive manufacturing in the certain segments of the process is essential for success. Creating “new users” will take time and effort, and this initiative from TCT may play its part.

TCT Show 2019

TCT Show in Birmingham is the only European standalone event of TCT Group. It brings together 3D printer and materials manufacturers in both desktop and industrial spaces. Here, there are traditionally more exhibits for the curious and early learners. As part of the partnership with 51动漫永久免费看nba视频 Education, around 300 young students were busy in the training hub this year.

As always, TCT Birmingham offers participation in talks and presentations, taking place on the Tech Stage and on TCT Introducing Stage. Of course, what the exhibitors pay for and are looking for is making business. Although, this year we witnessed a bit of the shrinkage in manufacturers’ presence, with a quite generous lounge space on the grounds, we hear that some of the major players were happy with the results.

TCT Show 2018

TCT Show 2018 proved to be as busy as ever, with noticeably more exhibitors showcasing their models. It was fun to see all those makes and samples. Star Wars Storm Trooper was greeting the visitors close to the entrance, adding to the sense of excitement upon arrival. A big part of the exhibition was dedicated to the industrial class machines, but there was plenty of interesting stuff to see for everyone.

Here we watched E3D Online Tool Changer demonstrating its ability to change its tools continuously. For the first time we saw the Blackbelt3D station in action.

Blackbelt Station - 3D Printer - TCTShow 2018

(Image: 51动漫永久免费看nba视频)

3devo displayed a filament shredder together with the filament-making machine. This gives us hope that soon enough every 3D printing enthusiast will be able to recycle unwanted prints and other plastic at home.

Prusa Research had three recently publicised items on display: MMU2, SLA 3D printer and Prusament Filament. It seems that lately 3D printer manufacturers have developed a trend for putting their own branded filament on the market.

Like in the previous year, TCT Show hosted classes for the younger visitors. The educational corner is now an integral part of the event, where a new generation is nurtured into the world of 3D printing.

TCT Show 2017

In 2017 TCT Show once again brought together 3D printer producers showcasing their newest upgrades. There were quite a few stands with filament producers promoting their new materials. We noticed that more and more material producers are focusing on eco-friendly solutions. During the event one could listen to inspiring keynote presentations, including from such giants as McLaren (F1), attend workshops, talk directly to decision-makers for business purposes.

Additional Note

You don’t have to be a professional to visit this 3D printing event. We observed groups of school children excitedly learning about additive manufacturing and viewing unique models. 3D software developers keep pushing the limits constantly surprising the audience with the abilities of 3D design.

One must not underestimate the role of 3D printing services companies in making this technology accessible to the general public. If you are planning to visit, we’d like to assure you that the location is very convenient for travel. The National Exhibition Centre (NEC) is right next to Birmingham International Airport and the rail station.

Setup and Design

– Build. No plastic here. The Toucan features a solid, full-metal body with a large touchscreen. The physical button on top is particularly handy for Single Shot mode, allowing the scanner to be operated much like a DSLR camera when needed.

– Wi-Fi. File handling is via Wi-Fi. Initially, I expected to miss a wired connection for transferring files, but after working with scans exceeding 1 GB, I started to appreciate the wireless approach. No extra cables around the workspace.

– Battery. Battery life is sufficient for several scans, depending on their size. Recharging is fast, with the manufacturer stating that the battery reaches 80 percent in around 30 minutes, and full charge takes under an hour in practice. As with similar scanners, it makes sense to use battery time for scanning and handle cleanup or merging while the device is charging.

On-device scan processing, showing statistical noise removal being applied directly on the scanner without the need for external software.

– Touchscreen. I was initially sceptical about using a touchscreen for scan cleanup, especially with my not-so-slim fingers. To my surprise, it worked well, and I was able to remove debris and make basic edits directly on the device without frustration.

– Brightness wheel. One design feature that stands out is the brightness adjustment wheel, something I haven’t seen on many other scanners. I personally didn’t use it much.

– 成全世界免费高清观看第6部. My unit arrived well calibrated, and I did not need to perform re成全世界免费高清观看第6部 at all. However, to understand the process better and document how it works, I took a closer look at the 成全世界免费高清观看第6部 interface. According to the manufacturer’s guidance, it is recommended to restore the factory 成全世界免费高清观看第6部 profile rather than performing a manual re成全世界免费高清观看第6部 yourself. For reference, here is the official re成全世界免费高清观看第6部 video.

– Silicone Case and Lanyard. Before taking the ‘Toucan for a walk’ outside, I decided to install the lanyard and the silicone protective cover. Attaching the lanyard was slightly fiddly, as catching the end of the cord is not that easy, and I ended up using a pair of pointed tweezers to guide it through.

I find this protective setup to be very important. The Toucan has a sturdy, full-metal build and is a relatively heavy device. In dusty or dirty environments such as garages and warehouses, a lanyard becomes especially useful, allowing the scanner to hang around the neck much like a DSLR camera. While the Toucan is not advertised as an outdoor scanner and I used it without a lanyard at home, taking it outside to a boat club proved that this setup works very well in real-world conditions.

Software: JMStudio

JMStudio can be downloaded directly from the official website under the Support tab. The software feels fast and responsive, and having worked with many other 3D scanning applications in the past, I found it easy to get used to the interface. On startup, JMStudio prompts users to 51动漫永久免费看nba视频 an account and sign in, but there is also a Guest Mode option, which I used for multiple scans without any issues.

– Transfering Files. As described in the Toucan manual on page 33, both the scanner and the PC need to be connected to the same network for file transfer. In JMStudio, open the main menu and select Import from Device, which brings up an interface showing your local network IP address. From there, simply follow the on-screen instructions to transfer scan files directly from the Toucan to your computer.

– Scan Merge. To 51动漫永久免费看nba视频 complete scans of larger objects or models with specific features, it often makes sense to scan individual parts separately and then merge the point clouds. The Toucan can handle simple merges directly on the device, but in my case, I used JMStudio for more control. I switched to manual alignment and selected five reference points on each scan, marked in different colours and matched as points one through five, which resulted in a successful merge. Check the final results of the RC boat below.

Testing and Results

Texture Mode – Travel Mug, Scan to 3D Print

My first object scanned with the 3DMakerpro Toucan was a clear success. I started with a travel mug featuring the 成熟人妻av无码专区 logo, which turned out to be a very scan-friendly object. The geometry and surface details were captured well, and within a short time, I was able to turn the scan into multiple variants, including a keychain, a miniature, and even a small Christmas tree ornament.

For cleanup, I initially used JMStudio. JMStudio handled the scan processing and mesh cleanup smoothly, and it gave me a solid file that was already suitable for 3D printing with minimal extra work.

Embedding Recycle Feature in Blender

– Editing in Blender. To take it a step further, I moved into Blender. I wanted to add an extra design element to the model. While I could have re51动漫永久免费看nba视频d the 成熟人妻av无码专区 logo from the image, I was short on time, so I asked ChatGPT to generate a simple 2 mm-thick ‘Recycle’ feature from an image instead, which I could then embed directly into the model. This was an interesting discovery. ChatGPT provided me with the element I needed very quickly.

– 3D Printing. In Creality Print slicer, I added a hole for a keyring, applied colors, and sliced the model for printing on the Creality K2 Pro. I’m happy with how the model turned out, and with a little more time, I could experiment with many more colors if needed.

This is one of my favourite examples of how custom objects from current projects, everyday items, or even gifts and memorabilia can be scanned and scaled down into something meaningful. In the past, I scanned and scaled down an RC boat I was working on and turned it into a miniature ornament for the Christmas tree. You wouldn’t bring a boat to the dinner table with food and turkey, but the ornament proudly hanging from the tree became a great conversation starter.

Texture Color Mode – Pet’s Bed, RC Boat Feature

As expected, blue laser handheld 3D scanners perform best when scanning matte objects, and my dog’s bed turned out to be an ideal candidate for capturing color details with the Toucan. Due to the size of the object, I scanned it using Texture Far Mode. The result came out nicely, with the fabric pattern and overall shape captured well, making this scan a good candidate for use as a VR or game asset.

Another object I scanned using color texture mode was the drivers figures module from the RC boat. In this case, I applied too much scanning spray, which affected the colour capture.

Preview of the RC boat drivers figurines scan in JMStudio. Scanned after applying spray to reduce reflections, with point cloud data visible before final mesh processing.

– 3D Scanning Spray. 3D scanning spray is another area where a certain level of skill is required, especially if preserving color matters. This is something I still find challenging, as it is easy to apply too much spray, which can wash out colours and leave the surface looking white. In this case, however, the model was quite shiny, so applying scanning spray was necessary to make the surface matte for a few hours and achieve a usable scan.

Color scanning generally works best on matte surfaces, where textures and colours can be captured clearly and consistently. Shiny or reflective objects often require scanning spray, which can reduce or completely obscure color information. Finding the right balance between surface preparation and color preservation is key when working with texture-based scans.

Single Shot Mode – Charging Bull

It was initially difficult to figure out how to use Single Shot mode. The ‘Coming Soon’ message shown for the Fixed Shot mode in the settings added to the confusion. Later, after seeing other users on Facebook successfully creating scans using Single Shot Mode, I realised that the easily overlooked ‘Single Shot’ label on the interface actually functions as an option button.

3DMakerpro Toucan handheld 3D scanner screen highlighting the Single Shot feature.
The Single Shot feature button on the 3DMakerpro Toucan interface, highlighted here with the arrow.

I absolutely welcome this option, especially since the main physical button on the device makes it possible to use the Toucan much like a regular camera. The technique feels very familiar to me, as it closely resembles the workflow I used over five years ago when I was working with photogrammetry. The key difference now is that the frames are captured very precisely using blue light lasers.

Another important point is that Single Shot mode produces not only accurate results but also very lightweight scans. While it does take longer to capture compared to a continuous scan, the processing time is significantly shorter. This balances out the overall workflow and reduces the total time needed to achieve a usable result. I highly recommend trying this feature in specific cases where accuracy and clean data matter most.

The low-poly 3D-printed replica of the Wall Street Charging Bull turned out to be a well-sized object for scanning in Single Shot Mode using Near Mode. The first attempt produced the best results and took approximately 120 shots to complete. While there were still a few missing patches underneath, the scan was already very usable as a base model.

Marker Far Mode – RC Boat

I scanned this RC boat using Single Shot mode again, as I find it very convenient when it comes to quick post-processing and lightweight files. The model is arguably small for Far Mode, but I decided to try it anyway to see how it would perform. Even in this setup, Single Shot scanning in Far Mode proved to be a fast and efficient process. Longer to scan but quicker to process.

– Reflective Markers. These help the scanner track the object more precisely, but they can also be time-consuming to remove from the model afterward. While scanning the RC boat, I found that dedicating a black A1 sheet was a great solution. The markers stay on the sheet permanently, and the black surface is practically invisible in certain scanning modes. Highly recommended! It saves a lot of time and keeps the object clean.

This detachable element from the RC boat makes sense to scan separately using Geometry Near mode. In the 3D printing workflow, this part can be further optimised by adding more intricate details. With multicolour 3D printing, additional colours can be applied directly during printing, without the need for painting.

– Scan Merge. To scan this model completely, I captured the top and bottom as separate scans and then merged them in JMStudio. Automatic alignment did not work in this case, as the overlapping geometry between the scans was very limited. I therefore switched to manual alignment and selected five reference points on each scan, marked in different colours and matched as points one through five. Using this approach, the alignment was successful.

Processing in JMStudio took care of the rest. It removed noise, fused the model, and repaired gaps. I was happy with the final result, as this scan is more than good enough to 51动漫永久免费看nba视频 a miniature replica on a multicolour 3D printer. Projects like this are mostly done for fun, as memorabilia, or simply as decorative pieces.

In the past, I have also scanned a broken RC boat, re51动漫永久免费看nba视频d the hull and top parts using 3D scanning and 3D printing. Thanks to such scans a slightly larger, fully functional RC boat was 51动漫永久免费看nba视频d and tested. A big thank you goes to Clive from SouthendMBC for helping with these projects and allowing me to scan his boats. This is a great example of how 3D scanning combined with 3D printing can help preserve, customise, and repair physical models. Read more: RC Model Boats: Traditional and 3D Printed

The 3D Printing Industry Awards go beyond recognising categories and winners. They provide a recurring moment for the additive manufacturing community to come together and reflect on progress across the industry. An expert committee and an open, discussion-driven process bring together engineers, founders, researchers, manufacturers, resellers, creators, and long-time industry voices. This collective input helps shape a shared view of what matters most in 3D printing.

This guide takes you inside the 3DPI Awards experience, exploring how the awards work, why they matter to the industry, and what makes them a meaningful meeting point for the 3D printing community, whether you are an engineer, designer, startup, manufacturer, or member of the media.

Table of Contents

What Are the 3DPI Awards?

The 3D Printing Industry Awards #3DPIAwards are an annual industry celebration recognising standout work across additive manufacturing. Depending on the year, categories can span hardware, materials, software, applications, and broader contributions that shape the AM ecosystem.

First launched in the late 2010s, the 3D Printing Industry Awards have grown into a well-established annual reference point for the additive manufacturing sector. Over time, the awards have mirrored the industry’s evolution across a broad range of technologies, applications, and industry segments.

How the 3DPI Awards Are Shaped

At the centre of the 3DPI Awards is Michael Petch and the team at 3dprintingindustry.com. His contribution goes far beyond hosting an awards programme. Over time, he has helped build a framework that genuinely brings the 3D printing community together and encourages shared understanding across the industry.

A visual snapshot of the diverse expert committee involved in the 3D Printing Industry Awards, highlighting the voices and experience contributing to the process.

Over my 10 years of experience in 3D printing, I have seen how valuable it is to participate in the expert committee process. These discussions often extend well beyond the awards themselves. At trade shows and industry events, it becomes much easier to start meaningful conversations, even when coming from very different perspectives, such as desktop and industrial systems, hardware and software, or startups and global manufacturers. We tend to share the same interests and overlapping networks. By bringing people together and encouraging open discussion during scoring matrix sessions, Michael plays a key role in making these connections possible.

Matrices and Voting: How Does it Work?

The 3D Printing Industry Awards use a blended approach that combines public participation with expert committee input. In practice, the community takes part through public nominations and voting, while an expert committee supports the process to help ensure categories are evaluated with broader context beyond popularity alone. For the most up to date details, see the official nomination announcement and the expert committee overview on 3D Printing Industry.

A behind-the-scenes look at a 2024 working session discussing scoring criteria for the 3D Printing Industry Awards, highlighting the collaborative and discussion-driven nature of the process.

Michael Petch, Grant Posner @3DMusketeers, Vicky Somma @TGAW, and I spent a dedicated meeting session reviewing and discussing scoring matrices, debating criteria, and challenging assumptions. These kinds of discussions offer a different perspective on the industry as a whole.

Another valuable aspect is that Michael gathers insights from these sessions and uses them to refine scoring matrices for future awards. By participating in this process, contributors help shape how the awards continue to evolve.

Industry Perspectives on the 3DPI Awards

To better reflect how the 3DPI Awards are perceived across the industry, we asked contributors and industry voices to share their perspective on what the awards represent and why they matter.

“The 3D Printing Industry Awards are a great snapshot of the progress in the additive manufacturing industry, spanning hardware, software, applications, and the key people behind them.

These awards are a powerful way to recognize the standout success stories in the ever-expanding additive manufacturing industry.” – Andrew Sink, Carbon.

“The 3D Printing Industry Awards are by the community and for the community. Comprised of users, SME’s, manufacturers, and even large company representatives, the committees are hand chosen to enable providing a spotlight on those that stand out. But the group is more than JUST those that choose who is the best in each category, the group is full of familiar faces who all work together to move the industry in the right direction. As they say, a rising tide lifts all benchies, no matter what their composition!

The additive space is experiencing amazing growth in the past few years and these awards help highlight those that do better, that challenge the norm, and that set the standard in their own categories. It also highlights the newcomers and the seasoned veterans in DIFFERENT CATEGORIES, so the startups are not competing directly against industry giants, it levels the playing field and gives companies, manufacturers, value adding resellers, etc. all an opportunity to be recognized for the amazing work they do in bringing this industry to the new layer heights we achieve year after year.” – Grant Posner, 3D Musketeers.

“For years now the 3DPI awards have brought together the best representatives from across the industry to help celebrate the latest achievements in AM. These awards are truly for industry professionals by industry professionals. Anyone could just decide to hand out awards as they saw fit, but the democratic nomination and voting process facilitated by 3DPI is such a unique and refreshing approach and it has been such an honor to be part of it these past few years.” – Alan Puccinelli, Strategic Partnerships, Prusa Research.

What’s in the Box

Revopoint INSPIRE 2 is available in two editions: Standard and Premium. To use the INSPIRE 2 with a mobile phone, the Premium edition is required, as it includes the additional accessories needed for mobile operation, such as a power bank. Below is the unboxed Premium version.

The INSPIRE 2’s packaging feels less ‘rich’ compared with the Revopoint MetroX, for example, the MetroX comes with a more substantial protective case. Unboxing the INSPIRE 2 is straightforward, though, and the included instructions are clear and easy to follow.

– Mobile Mode. The mobile setup didn’t take long to assemble, but installing the app and establishing a stable connection required a bit more patience. Depending on your smartphone settings, the phone may try to auto-switch Wi-Fi networks, which repeatedly disconnected the Revopoint device in my case. I eventually had to disable my router’s Wi-Fi to keep the scanner app connected consistently.

My INSPIRE 2 came pre-calibrated, and when I attempted to run the 成全世界免费高清观看第6部 process in the early stages anyway, the software informed me that the scanner was already calibrated and no further action was required.

Software: Revo Metro

I can confirm that Revopoint’s software continues to receive regular updates. Just like with the MetroX and Trackit, I ended up updating the software mid-testing to a newer version. The biggest additions since I last used Revo Metro are the shortcut to Revo Design and the ability to switch laser line modes during laser line scanning.

Revo Metro software showing a firmware update prompt.
Software update: Revo Metro prompts a firmware update for the INSPIRE 2 to improve scan frame rate and resolve bugs.

Also worth noting: Revopoint’s software naming can be confusing. There are several software programs to download with almost identical names, and I downloaded the wrong one more than once before finally getting the right version installed. I had a chance to share this feedback with Revopoint at the Formnext trade show, and Sienna agreed that having a single unified scanning software for all their scanners would be a user-friendlier approach.

From what I understand, some feature limitations relate to the overall product pricing structure. One example is that the automatic Dual-Axis Turntable tilt presets aren’t available to use with INSPIRE 2. The Dual-Axis turntable itself functions normally, but the advanced automatic tilt presets are unavailable. This sophisticated feature is reserved for more expensive scanners, such as MetroX and MetroY Pro.

Two overlapping Benchy scans displayed as dense point clouds in Revo Metro, showing yellow and blue point sets before merging.
Benchy scans visualised as yellow and blue point clouds before merging in Revo Metro.

– Scans Merging. This is where I had a learning curve when I first started using Revopoint’s software. For merging to work correctly, the scans need to overlap at least a little so the software can recognise shared features and align the angles. Once I understood that, the merging process became much more consistent.

– Cleaning Scans. In a few cases, I noticed that debris kept reappearing after cleaning in Raw Point Cloud mode, sometimes returning after merging or when switching between views. What worked for me was cleaning the scan in Mesh mode first, using tools like Erase, Smooth, and Remove Floating Parts on the mesh.

Testing and Results

Color 3D Scanning Mode

It is important to note that color 3D scanning works only in Feature – Full Field Mode. I was able to scan a popular 3D printer test model, Benchy.

Revopoint Inspire 2 3D scanner on a tripod, scanning a multicolor Benchy boat on a turntable.

The basic turntable included with the Premium edition runs independently. Revopoint INSPIRE 2 can work wirelessly and is very light to handle. In the picture above, it is mounted on the included tripod.

Color scan example: A multicolor Benchy boat captured with the Revopoint Inspire 2 and displayed in Revo Metro using the textured rendering mode.

As you can see, it’s absolutely doable. With a bit more practice, I’m sure I can push the results even further. At this stage, I can clearly feel the difference compared to what I achieved with the MetroX. The INSPIRE 2 delivers both color and geometry, but the MetroX remains noticeably more capable in terms of detail and surface accuracy.

Marker Scan Mode Example

This scanner surprised me in Marker Scan Mode, as such laser technology is usually found in more expensive models like the MetroX. At first, this made me think the INSPIRE 2 might be a budget version of the MetroX, but I proved myself wrong. Despite sharing some scanning modes, the INSPIRE 2 differs in many ways, including its much lighter weight and overall handling.

– Reflective Markers. These help the scanner track the object more precisely, but they can also be time-consuming to remove from the model afterward. While scanning my RC boat prototype, I found that dedicating a black A1 sheet was a great solution. The markers stay on the sheet permanently, and the black surface is practically invisible in certain scanning modes. Highly recommended! It saves a lot of time and keeps the object clean.

– Scanning on the Side. In my first attempt, I tried scanning the RC boat prototype while it was positioned on a DIY boat holder. The top and bottom surfaces scanned well, but the seam area, where the two halves meet, resulted in rough patches and holes. After a few tries, it became clear that scanning the model on its side works much better. When scanning the boat on its side, the scanner was able to capture enough point cloud data to merge everything cleanly. In total, it took me three separate scans to successfully merge the full boat model.

Of course, as usual on 51动漫永久免费看nba视频, I had to 3D print at least one of the scanned models. This time I drastically scaled down the RC boat prototype and printed it in PLA on the Creality K2 Pro. In this particular case, Creality Print software did an impressive job repairing the mesh (using Windows Services) and preparing it for printing. Now I can feature my ongoing RC boat project as a Christmas bauble or even turn it into a small keychain accessory.

My Christmas Tree will have a special decoration this year. It will also work as a reminder and a New Year’s resolution to continue certain projects. Printed in 3 colors on Creality K2 Pro. Revopoint INSPIRE 2 is totally capable of creating such memorabilia.

I find scanning RC model boats a particularly interesting area. Many older boats are handmade or heavily modified over time, and combining 3D scanning with 3D printing opens up a lot of possibilities for upgrades and custom parts. It gives builders extra freedom to redesign, reinforce, or modernize their models. Read more about RC boats, 3D scanning, and 3D printing here.

Mobile Mode Test Scan

As I mentioned in Setup area the mobile setup didn’t take long to assemble, but installing the app and establishing a stable connection took me some time. Depending on your smartphone settings, the phone may try to auto-switch Wi-Fi networks, which repeatedly disconnected the Revopoint device in my case. I eventually had to disable my router’s Wi-Fi to keep the scanner app connected consistently.

Mobile mode in action: Using the Revopoint INSPIRE 2 with the mobile kit to scan surface details directly from a smartphone.

– Scanner Weight. The INSPIRE 2 itself (without the power bank) weighs just 190 g, and this is clearly one of the biggest selling points of the device. Scanning for longer periods with heavier, more expensive scanners can quickly become tiring, but the lightweight INSPIRE 2 makes handheld scanning noticeably easier and more comfortable.

I’ll continue testing the INSPIRE 2 in mobile mode, including scanning different objects and lighting conditions. More mobile-mode results and examples will be added to this article.

Compare to Other 3D Scanners

Compare to the Revopoint other 3D scanners series:

In comparison to other Revopoint scanners, the INSPIRE 2 sits in the entry-level segment, yet it surprisingly incorporates technologies usually found in more expensive models, such as combined structured light and infrared laser modes. As mentioned earlier, my first impression was that it might be a ‘budget MetroX,’ but in practice it has its own strengths, with lightweight design being one of the most notable. For many users, especially those who prefer handheld scanning, this alone can be a compelling reason to choose it.

As 3D scanning technology becomes accessible, there is also competition with offerings from brands like 3DMakerpro, Creality, and Einstar. Read more about other 3D scanners on our website.

On 51动漫永久免费看nba视频 we’ve often featured Revopoint 3D scanners as entry-level, budget-friendly devices, but it’s clear that Revopoint as a company operates on a much larger scale. Their presence at Formnext 2025 showed this well. From autonomous robotic arm scanning using TrackIt, to the more advanced MetroY setups, and the wider Revo software ecosystem including Revo Design, Revo Measure and Revo Scan. It’s a brand that manages to offer accessible consumer scanners like the INSPIRE 2 while also developing serious professional solutions. This combination of affordability and ambitious innovation keeps Revopoint visible both in the maker community and in the professional scanning market.

Formnext has established itself as the key 3D printing industry event, and it is well known for innovations. Additive manufacturers are holding off from making their announcements until it’s the right time and place. And this trade show is the best setting to attract a lot of attention. Every year 3D printer manufacturers showcase new products and technologies. Some may be an enhancement or a new solution, but a few could lead to a real breakthrough.

Table of Contents

What is Formnext?

Formnext is the leading international exhibition and conference dedicated to additive manufacturing and industrial 3D printing. The event represents the entire value chain of the additive manufacturing sector, from software and materials to machines and end-use applications. Formnext connects exhibitors with experts, decision-makers, and pioneers from all over the world, providing a unique platform for networking, knowledge exchange, and business deals.

Is There Anything for Consumers?

While a ticket price, from 69+ (early birds), might seem steep, it’s a worthwhile investment for those eager to stay at the forefront of the 3D printing industry. Formnext isn’t just a show; it’s a pivotal gathering where consumers, enthusiasts, start-ups, and small businesses can explore groundbreaking opportunities and witness the evolution of 3D printing firsthand. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this essential event and discover what’s next in the world of 3D printing!

For a number of years, the Formnext trade show has been held in four big halls. The ground floor (Halls 11.0 and 12.0) is typically dedicated mostly to heavy machinery and giant robotic arms. But in the 1st-floor halls (11.1 and 12.1), it is possible to find many exhibitors with a focus on the consumer market, featuring 3D printers, 3D scanners, laser engravers, innovative materials, services, and applications.

Getting lost in the four big halls and endless passages between them is very easy. We recommend using the Interactive Floor Plans and Search on their website in advance to navigate easily.

Highlights

Visiting Formnext in person is an unforgettable experience. But the trade show highlights can also be found everywhere on social media by following the #Formnext hashtags. On 51动漫永久免费看nba视频, we keep our events table updated with cherry-picked event highlights. These can be live videos by popular YouTubers or photo collections by niche influencers. To find a particular year’s highlights, use the table search.

Formnext 2025

Formnext 2025 reported 38,282 visitors and 804 exhibitors across roughly 50,000 m² of exhibition space. While the exhibitor count was slightly lower than in 2024 (864 exhibitors), visitor numbers grew noticeably compared to last year’s 34,404. This year, instead of publishing the usual infographic, the Formnext team released a full report summarizing the event’s key metrics and industry highlights. (Source: PR_Formnext2025_AM)

Toolchanger Technology Showdown

Snapmaker’s record-breaking 深爱激情五月 campaign in August reignited interest in toolchanging technology to the point that Formnext 2025 delivered a genuine toolchanger showdown in Hall 12.1. We have never seen that hall so crowded. As Mikoláš Zuza noted on X, even he — as part of the Prusa3D team — struggled to get close to the newly launched machines.

It was great to talk to Blayne Sapelli at the Snapmaker booth and see the U1 in action. What a machine — both aesthetically and functionally. The featured prints, along with the printing speeds and material stats, were genuinely impressive.

Stress-Tested 3D Printed Shoes

This year, I decided to do something unusual: I brought a pair of Flux by PollyFab — resin 3D printed shoes — and tested them directly on the tradeshow floor. Coincidentally, Formnext had its own booth selling branded merchandise, including socks, which made the whole experiment even more fun. The shoes became a great conversation starter at almost every booth I visited.

Many exhibitors had 3D printed footwear, midsoles, or sole-support concepts on display. Here is just a small fraction of the 3D printed shoes I witnessed at Formnext 2025:

By the end of the show, I had gathered so much insight into 3D printed footwear that it’s more than enough to start an evergreen guide in our usual style. Big kudos to Andrew Sink from Carbon for showcasing their collection and explaining their developments in this rapidly evolving space.

3D Scanners Got Accessible

Thanks to several recent 深爱激情五月 campaigns, the 3D scanning space has shifted once again. The technology is becoming increasingly accessible for consumers and small businesses, with many brands now offering scanners in the $300 to $4,000 range. On the Formnext floors, we saw a strong presence from companies pushing affordability and ease of use.

It was great to meet representatives from Revopoint3D and 3DMakerPro, whose standout products — TrackIt and Eagle — we featured on our website earlier this year. I also finally met Sienna, who patiently handled all my questions throughout the TrackIt evaluation process.

About Consumer Lasers, bbox撕裂bass俄罗斯, and Resin Printing

While consumer and small-business laser cutters, bbox撕裂bass俄罗斯 machines, and resin printers didn’t generate the same noise and crowd density as the FDM/toolchanger area this year, they were still well represented across the halls. TwoTrees, for example, had an impressive booth showcasing the TTC450 Pro, a machine we recently reviewed on our website.

Creality’s booth, however, felt like it had everything under one roof. Beyond their flagship multicolour FDM systems, they introduced the compact Falcon T1 laser engraver, demonstrated their increasingly sophisticated 3D scanners, and highlighted their sister company PioCreat, which displayed both consumer-grade and professional resin printers.

Creality also presented a full lineup of CubeMe creations — models generated with their online 3D generator on the CrealityCloud platform. It’s clear they are building a comprehensive ecosystem for makers. I’m genuinely pleased with the direction Creality is moving and look forward to seeing more disruptive innovations in the spirit of the original Ender-3, CR-10, CR-30 (3DPrintMill), and the K1  in the years ahead.

Meeting and chatting with Seth was the icing on the cake. We were literally sketching out a roadmap of future collaborations right there on the tradeshow floor — a perfect example of what makes Formnext so valuable: genuine connections with the brands shaping our industry.

As predicted, there was big news at the Formnext 2024 tradeshow. Traditionally, the Prusa Research team launches their product of the year right on or just before the tradeshow; this year was no exception. Everyone expected something, but what exactly was a big surprise. The Prusa CORE One, a fully enclosed CoreXY 3D printer, was unveiled directly at the tradeshow. This machine was instantly deemed as an answer to the Bambu Lab X1C machine. Let’s have a quick look at the Core One main features, why it was so well received, and discuss what happens next.

The Bambu Labs booth felt like a playground—my first impression was that it focused more on promoting their MakerWorld platform than the machines themselves. In 2024, MakerWorld, thanks to features including an AI model generator and, of course, popular 3D printers, rapidly grew to 10 million visits per month, according to SimilarWeb statistics.

This year, there was a notably strong presence of HueForge-type print/art. Spectacular, large-sized works gained popularity at the booths dedicated to 3D printing materials and desktop FDM 3D printers. These vibrant artworks showcased the expansive capabilities of modern 3D printing technology. 3D printers doesn’t have to be big. Well-known in the consumer 3D printing market, Elegoo was an exhibitor at Formnext for the first time, featuring both their FDM and resin desktop 3D printers. Their OrangeStorm Giga – their largest ever 3D printer – attracted a lot of attention, partially because of the ongoing popular 深爱激情五月 campaign that in the end accumulated $3,386,996. Mass-producing such big printers caught the public by surprise and exposed previously unknown demands. At the show, the machine was printing a giant vase in vase mode, demonstrating its capability. Niche influencers took the opportunity to feature this product on their channels, driving even more attention to the product. Read more about the OrangeStorm Giga.

One of the most compelling advantages of trade shows like Formnext is the opportunity to witness products in action, with live demonstrations of technologies such as 3D printing and scanning being commonplace. At the 3DMakerPro booth, the team extended a warm invitation for me to have my face scanned, an offer I gladly accepted. The result was a fascinating glimpse into the capabilities of their scanning technology, providing me with an example on the spot.

Formnext 2022

When Formnext 2021 was the first post-pandemic tradeshow and some visitors stayed away, then Formnext 2022 was back to pre-COVID levels with 29,581 visitors attending compared to 17,859 in the last year. There have been around 200 more exhibitors compared to 2021. Please find the 2021 event statistics below. In the latest Formnext press release, it was announced that the event had a strong international flavor:
With attendees from 96 nations and a remarkably high proportion of international visitors (51%) and exhibitors (58%), Formnext once again demonstrated its status as the leading international trade fair for additive manufacturing and modern industrial production.

As for consumers, in halls 11.1 and 12.1, there were displays by such brands like Prusa3D, Snapmaker, Polymaker, Creality, and others. Prusa3D’s booth, which looked like a giant MK3 machine, was well liked by their community, fans, and influencers who kept their stand packed nearly nonstop. Snapmaker showcased their new Artisan 3D printer and it was possible to compare enclosures. Polymaker had a lot to show, a collection of colorful 3D printed ice cream and a giant spool were especially remarkable. Creality’s booth was not that flashy but displayed many of their well-known machines, including the budget Ender series.

One of the strongest advantages of the tradeshows like Formnext is the possibility to meet in person people you know. I had an opportunity to meet Andrew Sink in person after two years of close collaboration. Andrew traveled with Carbon to Germany where they featured their platform, launched new materials and showcased a 3D printer.

It is fair to mention that the highlights we offered this year won’t even cover the tip of the iceberg. There is still so much to cover, with particular announcements worth being featured in separate articles. We will mention what we saw at Formnext in other articles as well.

Formnext 2021

The 2021 Formnext event held in Frankfurt, Germany, was a resounding success, with 606 exhibitors taking part, 50% of them international. More than 17K visitors attended this tradeshow. The event was held in compliance with the COVID rules and featured a wide range of safety measures, including temperature checks, mask wearing, and social distancing. The event was a great opportunity for businesses to reconnect and network with each other, as well as showcase their latest products and innovations. It was great to witness such a successful event, with COVID still fresh on everyone’s mind. Formnext is definitely poised to continue being a leading player in the 3D printing industry for years to come.

Formnext 2020 – Virtual Edition

The trade show was scheduled to take place in Frankfurt, Germany, in November 2020. However, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the physical event has been canceled. This marks the first time in its nine-year history that Formnext has been canceled. The decision was made by the organizers after consulting with local authorities and health experts. While the pandemic has put a halt to many physical events, the organizers of Formnext held a virtual conference on November 10-12. While this was disappointing news for those of us who were looking forward to attending the event in person, the organizers have stated that the virtual conference would still offer an opportunity to learn about the latest advances in additive manufacturing and be the platform for networking with industry peers.

Formnext 2019

That year Formnext demonstrated massive growth, even compared to 2018. This trade show now spreads over 2 large halls on 4 floors. This means that Formnext occupies twice larger space compared to 2017 with 3-times as many exhibitors. It further gained 1,200 sq.m. in additional space since 2018. In the final press release, it was announced that over 34.5 thousand specialists and managers visited the grounds in 2019.

What strikes this time is the ever-growing presence of personal/desktop machine manufacturers of all sizes. The legacy of Formnext lies with big industrial bodies with the likes of HP and GE, and of course, the “grandfathers” of 3D printing, Stratasys, and 3D Systems. This year I stumbled across Phrozen with a small but nice-looking booth. The common tune among the exhibitors that I hear is that the main bulk of their business comes from Formnext. This is the place where deals are sealed and new valuable contacts are found.

The quality of attendees remains very relevant to all, no matter how big or small they are. Usually, at regional events, only local managers can be found. Formnext, however, is attended by the C-suite HQ management, this is why this is the place to be if you want to secure new business.

Conclusion

Formnext is one of the most important events in the 3D printing industry, and it is clear that the technology has come a long way in recent years. The ability to print customized bespoke items on demand has revolutionized manufacturing. The need for revamping the supply chain and to bring manufacturing closer to home has made 3D printing more attractive for traditional manufacturers who started adopting this technology in different spheres and stages of their production. And of course, meeting people in person always does its magic. It shows commitment and increases the trust between partners.

Comic Con events around the world have become a vibrant celebration of fandom, creativity, and craftsmanship. Among the costumes, collectibles, and immersive displays, one technology continues to stand out is 3D printing. From designed cosplay armor and fan art busts to detailed tabletop figurines and display props, 3D printing plays a growing role in how makers, artists, and exhibitors bring their ideas to life. This guide explores how 3D printing powers Comic Con culture.

Table of Contents (Jump to a Section)

From Comic Books to Cosplay Tech

Comic Con events have grown far beyond their comic book origins. What began decades ago as small gatherings for fans of comics and sci-fi has exploded into massive festivals of pop culture, gaming, cosplay, film, and fandom. Today, these events attract hundreds of thousands of attendees, and they offer a unique window into how creativity, technology, and community intersect.

Over the past decade, 3D printing has quietly become part of that area. At first, it appeared in the background, a few props here, a cosplay detail there. But as the technology became more accessible, especially with budget FDM and resin 3D printers, its presence on the convention floor grew. Today, you can find 3D printing in costumes, in artist booths, and in fan art collectibles. Based on my recent experiences as both a visitor and media guest at several Comic Con events, this guide explores how 3D printing is shaping the future of fan-driven creativity.

Fan Art and Figurines: From Merch to Props Stalls

One of the most visually striking parts of any Comic Con is the overwhelming variety of fan-made art and collectibles. From rows of painted figurines to vibrant display walls of custom prints, these booths often feel more like gallery exhibitions than simple merch stalls. Across the different Comic Cons I attended, it was clear that 3D printing, laser cutting, and hand-finishing techniques are now a major part of how creators bring characters and concepts to life.

What stood out to me was the sheer range of approaches. Some booths focused on minimalist or stylized prints, while others packed their tables with full shelves of 3D printed or laser-cut collectibles or even props.

Behind the Scenes: Exhibitor Booth

At Comic Con, some booths go far beyond just showcasing products — they become community hubs. I was pleased to meet several talented individuals at the Creality booth, where 3D printing was front and center. Cosplayer NMT_Cosplay (Nathan) was there in full Soldier Boy costume from The Boys, featuring 3D printed elements including his helmet, knife, and armor details. I also had the chance to connect with Morgan, the artist behind Printed Obsession, whose 3D printed fan art busts and models are well known in the community.

As Creality puts it: Print Your Fandom. And they really leaned into that idea at the booth. Apart from showcasing a range of Creality machines, visitors could play a mini basketball game with 3D printed balls for a chance to win prizes. You could interact with a real cosplayer, talk to a fan art designer, and take selfies with them. This wasn’t just a booth; it was a hands-on reminder of how far 3D printing has come as a part of fan expression. This was truly a fun place to be, chatting with people who have 3D printing on their minds.

All this happened thanks to the big help from Creality’s reseller, MG Crafts, represented by Brett and Billy. They are active across the UK and Ireland, regularly exhibiting at events like this (the next is at the NEC Birmingham). At Comic Con, they looked after the booth setup, the technology side, and the live demonstrations, from 3D printers running on-site to scanners in action.

More About Cosplayers

If anyone ever feels shy about asking for a photo or selfie, Comic Con is the best place to shred that shyness. Most cosplayers are not only happy to pose — they see it as a reward for their hard work. These costumes take weeks or months to plan, print, sew, and finish. A photo request is often the moment that makes it all worth it. Across all the Comic Cons I attended, I met so many people happy to pose, smile, and celebrate their fandom with others.

Some cosplayers were so accurate, I had to do a double-take. The Loki (and Scarlet Witch) I met looked exactly like I remembered from the Thor films — costume, build, and even attitude. It’s easy to forget you’re not standing next to the actual actor when the quality is this high.

I was so impressed with the cosplayers at MCM Comic Con that I felt the need to mark the moment with something physical. That’s how I ended up buying this 3D printed Loki bust. Funny thing is, I have plenty of 3D printers at home and could easily print one myself, but after taking a selfie with Loki, picking up the bust just felt right. It’s more than a collectible. It’s a memory.

Comic Cons: When and Where

Comic Cons happen all over the world and come in all shapes and sizes. In the US, events like San Diego Comic Con and New York Comic Con are major annual milestones, while the UK hosts massive gatherings such as MCM Comic Con in London and Birmingham. But beyond the headline events, there are also countless local and regional conventions worth exploring. These smaller shows may lack the scale of the big expos, but they often deliver a more personal experience, easier access to creators, and plenty of cosplay and merch highlights. If you are just starting out, a downscaled Comic Con in your town might be the perfect entry point.

Finding events is easy. A quick online search for ‘Comic Con near me’ usually reveals upcoming dates, or you can check dedicated convention calendars and local venue listings. Whether it’s a high-profile exhibition center or a humble community hall, every Comic Con shares the same energy: creativity, fandom, and the joy of being among like-minded people. No matter the size, the experience is almost always worth it.

From full costumes and intricate props to fan art collectibles and display setups, 3D printing is everywhere, and it is being used by passionate creators who want to bring their fandom to life in the most accurate way possible.

As a maker and observer, it was inspiring to see how approachable the technology has become. Even budget FDM and resin 3D printers are helping hobbyists, artists, and brands make a real impact. Whether you are printing at home or just admiring the results at an event, one thing is clear — 3D printing is a natural fit for the world of Comic Con.
