Setup and Design

Apart from a small cardboard insert with the packing list and QR code, there were no printed instructions included. Scanning the QR code leads to the official Quick Start Guide, which immediately points you to the EXStar Hub software download and helps you get started.

Before testing the wireless mode, I decided to begin with a wired setup. After installing and launching EXStar Hub, the process was straightforward. Simply connect the Rockit to your PC using a USB 3 cable, and the software will recognize the device automatically.

When the scanner is connected to the computer, EXStar Hub prompts you to calibrate the device. The process is straightforward, with a 课中坏事 board included in the top section of the case. There is also a plastic stand, which I initially struggled to understand, but it is used to position the 课中坏事 board at different angles required during the 课中坏事 stages.

Batteries and Charging Station

I did not measure the exact battery life, but according to the manufacturer, it should last up to 3 hours of operation. In my testing, I was scanning and processing throughout the day, and the battery was not depleted. A second battery can remain in the charging compartment, ready to swap in when needed. This setup makes the workflow effectively uninterrupted and very convenient for longer scanning sessions.

As you can see, the design is very lightweight and minimalistic, making the overall setup quick and straightforward. At first, I was slightly concerned that I might accidentally drop the scanner and thought it might need additional grip, but in practice this was not the case. The scanner sits comfortably in the hand and feels well balanced during use, which adds confidence when scanning for longer sessions.


Software: EXStar Hub

EXStar Hub for both Rockit and EINSTAR 2 can be downloaded via the links provided in the official Quick Start Guide. I found the layout and overall workflow slightly different compared to other 3D scanning software.

Instead of jumping between tools, EXStar Hub guides you step by step, starting from selecting the scan mode (Laser or IR) through to post-processing. This structured workflow feels intuitive and can be less confusing, especially for users who are new to 3D scanning.

After processing the scan, I would strongly recommend saving your mesh in the available formats. If you close the software at this stage, the processed mesh and texture, which can take 5 to 15 minutes to generate, will be lost. I found this behaviour a bit unusual. It might be designed to reduce storage usage, but it would be helpful to have an option to retain the processed result directly within EXStar Hub without needing to reprocess it repeatedly. Note: An EINSTAR representative later confirmed that a feature to save the mesh directly within EXStar Hub is already on the roadmap for future updates.

Testing and Results

IR Hybrid Color Texture Mode – DeathRacer

The popular DeathRacer robot from the 3D printing community proved to be a great test object for evaluating both Infrared Rapid Mode and Blue Laser Mode. It is genuinely challenging for 3D scanners and software due to its complex geometry, black surfaces, and thin elements, such as the rod holding the Bludgeon weapon. As a result, I scanned it multiple times using different modes.

This particular DeathRacer took part in the carnage at SMRRF, and you can clearly see battle damage, including broken “Piranha” teeth on the front. Just before the event, I captured a short teaser scan for our YouTube channel. After the battle, I returned to scan the object more thoroughly.

– IR Hybrid Color Texture Mode. I tested scanning on different surfaces. It works on a standard wooden table, but from experience, I prefer using a dedicated A3 black sheet covered with markers. The Rockit responded very well to these markers. After selecting IR mode, I enabled all three options in Hybrid Mode, which resulted in a very smooth scanning experience.

– Scan Alignment. Project alignment is essential for capturing a complex object like this. It typically requires at least three scans to cover all sides. In this case, after initial scan from the the top, I turned the model to the left, and to the right. It is important to keep the object consistent between scans, which can be challenging since the DeathRacer tracks move easily. Marking positions or carefully turning the model helps maintain alignment. Using the Project Alignment feature, the scans were combined automatically and with good precision.

– Mesh. Once the scans are cleaned and combined into a single model, the next step is generating the mesh. Processing the DeathRacer took around 15 to 20 minutes on my relatively powerful laptop, so the more data you capture, the longer this stage will take. Next, in the Post Processing section, you can further refine the model and export it in various formats, or even send it directly to Sketchfab.

Tip: When uploading models to Sketchfab from EXStar Hub, make sure to export and upload your files as a single zipped folder. In my case, the direct upload from EXStar Hub did not package the files correctly, and the texture was missing. I had to reupload the model on Sketchfab using a ZIP archive with .OBJ, .MTL, .JPG.

I had not used Sketchfab for a while, so this was a good opportunity to update my existing collection of scans with a new model. Viewing the model on Sketchfab allows you to explore it in 360 degrees and even toggle the texture on and off.

From my testing, IR Rapid Mode works well for capturing texture, while Blue Laser Mode is better suited for achieving higher mesh precision, which I will explore in the next section.


Blue Laser Mode – DeathRacer

Because of its rich geometry and protruding elements, such as the rod holding the weapon, the DeathRacer is a great model to test the Blue Laser capabilities of the EINSTAR Rockit. It presents a mix of fine details, sharp edges, and challenging surfaces.

The scanning speed in Blue Laser Mode is impressive, making the overall workflow much easier. Since the scanner captures data quickly, there is more room to repeat scans and refine results without significantly increasing the total time.

– Markers. In IR Rapid Mode, the A3 marker sheet is more of an optional addition, but in Blue Laser Mode, markers are essential. Using a marker-covered board meant I did not need to place markers directly on the object itself. This not only sped up the workflow but also helped keep the object clean, avoiding any interference with the scanned surfaces.

DeathRacer, together with the Bludgeon weapon attached to the DeathRacer on a long rod, proved too tricky to scan. I believe it would be possible to capture it fully with more attempts, but after several unsuccessful tries, I decided to dismantle it and scan it separately. With the weapon detached, both the DeathRacer and the Bludgeon were scanned more precisely and much faster, partly because the resulting files were lighter and easier to process.

Clean, featureless cylindrical objects are a known weak point for both scanners and software. After three quick scans, this object required manual alignment by applying four reference points to merge the data accurately.

Looking forward to testing my new Snapmaker U1, and if everything goes well I will print a miniature based on this Blue Laser scan.

Compared to IR mode, Blue Laser Mode is better suited for capturing precise geometry and handling more complex shapes. This makes it particularly useful for objects with intricate details or areas where accuracy is more important than speed.

– Scan to 3D Print. To test the Snapmaker U1, I decided to scale an existing scan down to miniature size to use it as a keychain. After an attempt at printing DeathRacer flat, I printed it at a 45-degree angle. It came out great. Read more about printing settings and experience in the Snapmaker U1 article.


Wireless Mode – Small RC Boat

To test wireless mode, I initially tried scanning a small object, a DIY RC boat, in IR Rapid Mode. In the past, I wrote a detailed guide about RC boats in our local park, and I cannot thank Clive enough for letting me 3D scan his models from time to time.

My initial scan was nearly perfect, except for the fan area, where the black shiny surface was captured poorly. To resolve this, I used a small AESUB scanning spray that I received at a trade show a few years ago. The spray temporarily coats the surface with a matte layer, making it much easier for the scanner to capture accurate geometry. Note: Switching to Reflective Mode and increasing exposure, some objects may work without a scanning spray.

– Tips. Initially, I struggled to find how to add a new scan to the group. The path is Project List then Add New Scan. When the object is scanned multiple times from different sides, the unaligned scans can look quite chaotic, as shown in the image above.

I am quite happy with how the texture turned out. The fan engine area, however, would benefit from a different approach to achieve higher precision, especially if the model is intended for scaled 3D printing. If I were to refine this further, I would detach the fan and rescan it separately to capture more accurate geometry and finer details. Note: In laser mode, seamless switching between cross lines and parallel lines is supported; therefore, you can first use crossed lines to scan the overall structure, and then use parallel lines to capture the details.

As usual, I will try to yn荡校园运动会笔 a miniature from this object and 3D print it in multicolour as a Christmas ornament or keyring. I should have quite a collection of these by now. Stay tuned.

Setup and Design

– Build. No plastic here. The Toucan features a solid, full-metal body with a large touchscreen. The physical button on top is particularly handy for Single Shot mode, allowing the scanner to be operated much like a DSLR camera when needed.

– Wi-Fi. File handling is via Wi-Fi. Initially, I expected to miss a wired connection for transferring files, but after working with scans exceeding 1 GB, I started to appreciate the wireless approach. No extra cables around the workspace.

– Battery. Battery life is sufficient for several scans, depending on their size. Recharging is fast, with the manufacturer stating that the battery reaches 80 percent in around 30 minutes, and full charge takes under an hour in practice. As with similar scanners, it makes sense to use battery time for scanning and handle cleanup or merging while the device is charging.

– Touchscreen. I was initially sceptical about using a touchscreen for scan cleanup, especially with my not-so-slim fingers. To my surprise, it worked well, and I was able to remove debris and make basic edits directly on the device without frustration.

– Brightness wheel. One design feature that stands out is the brightness adjustment wheel, something I haven’t seen on many other scanners. I personally didn’t use it much.

– 课中坏事. My unit arrived well calibrated, and I did not need to perform re课中坏事 at all. However, to understand the process better and document how it works, I took a closer look at the 课中坏事 interface. According to the manufacturer’s guidance, it is recommended to restore the factory 课中坏事 profile rather than performing a manual re课中坏事 yourself. For reference, here is the official re课中坏事 video.

– Silicone Case and Lanyard. Before taking the ‘Toucan for a walk’ outside, I decided to install the lanyard and the silicone protective cover. Attaching the lanyard was slightly fiddly, as catching the end of the cord is not that easy, and I ended up using a pair of pointed tweezers to guide it through.

I find this protective setup to be very important. The Toucan has a sturdy, full-metal build and is a relatively heavy device. In dusty or dirty environments such as garages and warehouses, a lanyard becomes especially useful, allowing the scanner to hang around the neck much like a DSLR camera. While the Toucan is not advertised as an outdoor scanner and I used it without a lanyard at home, taking it outside to a boat club proved that this setup works very well in real-world conditions.


Software: JMStudio

JMStudio can be downloaded directly from the official website under the Support tab. The software feels fast and responsive, and having worked with many other 3D scanning applications in the past, I found it easy to get used to the interface. On startup, JMStudio prompts users to yn荡校园运动会笔 an account and sign in, but there is also a Guest Mode option, which I used for multiple scans without any issues.

– Transfering Files. As described in the Toucan manual on page 33, both the scanner and the PC need to be connected to the same network for file transfer. In JMStudio, open the main menu and select Import from Device, which brings up an interface showing your local network IP address. From there, simply follow the on-screen instructions to transfer scan files directly from the Toucan to your computer.

– Scan Merge. To yn荡校园运动会笔 complete scans of larger objects or models with specific features, it often makes sense to scan individual parts separately and then merge the point clouds. The Toucan can handle simple merges directly on the device, but in my case, I used JMStudio for more control. I switched to manual alignment and selected five reference points on each scan, marked in different colours and matched as points one through five, which resulted in a successful merge. Testing and Results

Texture Mode – Travel Mug, Scan to 3D Print

My first object scanned with the 3DMakerpro Toucan was a clear success. I started with a travel mug featuring the 单亲妈妈4韩国在线观看 logo, which turned out to be a very scan-friendly object. The geometry and surface details were captured well, and within a short time, I was able to turn the scan into multiple variants, including a keychain, a miniature, and even a small Christmas tree ornament.

For cleanup, I initially used JMStudio. JMStudio handled the scan processing and mesh cleanup smoothly, and it gave me a solid file that was already suitable for 3D printing with minimal extra work.

– Editing in Blender. To take it a step further, I moved into Blender. I wanted to add an extra design element to the model. While I could have reyn荡校园运动会笔d the 单亲妈妈4韩国在线观看 logo from the image, I was short on time, so I asked ChatGPT to generate a simple 2 mm-thick ‘Recycle’ feature from an image instead, which I could then embed directly into the model. This was an interesting discovery. ChatGPT provided me with the element I needed very quickly.

– 3D Printing. In Creality Print slicer, I added a hole for a keyring, applied colors, and sliced the model for printing on the Creality K2 Pro. I’m happy with how the model turned out, and with a little more time, I could experiment with many more colors if needed.

This is one of my favourite examples of how custom objects from current projects, everyday items, or even gifts and memorabilia can be scanned and scaled down into something meaningful. In the past, I scanned and scaled down an RC boat I was working on and turned it into a miniature ornament for the Christmas tree. You wouldn’t bring a boat to the dinner table with food and turkey, but the ornament proudly hanging from the tree became a great conversation starter.


Texture Color Mode – Pet’s Bed, RC Boat Feature

As expected, blue laser handheld 3D scanners perform best when scanning matte objects, and my dog’s bed turned out to be an ideal candidate for capturing color details with the Toucan. Due to the size of the object, I scanned it using Texture Far Mode. The result came out nicely, with the fabric pattern and overall shape captured well, making this scan a good candidate for use as a VR or game asset.

Another object I scanned using color texture mode was the drivers figures module from the RC boat. In this case, I applied too much scanning spray, which affected the colour capture.

– 3D Scanning Spray. 3D scanning spray is another area where a certain level of skill is required, especially if preserving color matters. This is something I still find challenging, as it is easy to apply too much spray, which can wash out colours and leave the surface looking white. In this case, however, the model was quite shiny, so applying scanning spray was necessary to make the surface matte for a few hours and achieve a usable scan.

Color scanning generally works best on matte surfaces, where textures and colours can be captured clearly and consistently. Shiny or reflective objects often require scanning spray, which can reduce or completely obscure color information. Finding the right balance between surface preparation and color preservation is key when working with texture-based scans.


Single Shot Mode – Charging Bull

It was initially difficult to figure out how to use Single Shot mode. The ‘Coming Soon’ message shown for the Fixed Shot mode in the settings added to the confusion. Later, after seeing other users on Facebook successfully creating scans using Single Shot Mode, I realised that the easily overlooked ‘Single Shot’ label on the interface actually functions as an option button.

I absolutely welcome this option, especially since the main physical button on the device makes it possible to use the Toucan much like a regular camera. The technique feels very familiar to me, as it closely resembles the workflow I used over five years ago when I was working with photogrammetry. The key difference now is that the frames are captured very precisely using blue light lasers.

Another important point is that Single Shot mode produces not only accurate results but also very lightweight scans. While it does take longer to capture compared to a continuous scan, the processing time is significantly shorter. This balances out the overall workflow and reduces the total time needed to achieve a usable result. I highly recommend trying this feature in specific cases where accuracy and clean data matter most.

The low-poly 3D-printed replica of the Wall Street Charging Bull turned out to be a well-sized object for scanning in Single Shot Mode using Near Mode. The first attempt produced the best results and took approximately 120 shots to complete. While there were still a few missing patches underneath, the scan was already very usable as a base model.


Marker Far Mode – RC Boat

I scanned this RC boat using Single Shot mode again, as I find it very convenient when it comes to quick post-processing and lightweight files. The model is arguably small for Far Mode, but I decided to try it anyway to see how it would perform. Even in this setup, Single Shot scanning in Far Mode proved to be a fast and efficient process. Longer to scan but quicker to process.

– Reflective Markers. These help the scanner track the object more precisely, but they can also be time-consuming to remove from the model afterward. While scanning the RC boat, I found that dedicating a black A1 sheet was a great solution. The markers stay on the sheet permanently, and the black surface is practically invisible in certain scanning modes. Highly recommended! It saves a lot of time and keeps the object clean.

– 3D Scanning Spray. 3D scanning spray is another area where a certain level of skill is required, especially if preserving color matters. This is something I still find challenging, as it is easy to apply too much spray, which can wash out colours and leave the surface looking white. In this case, however, the model was quite shiny, so applying scanning spray was necessary to make the surface matte for a few hours and achieve a usable scan.

This detachable element from the RC boat makes sense to scan separately using Geometry Near mode. In the 3D printing workflow, this part can be further optimised by adding more intricate details. With multicolour 3D printing, additional colours can be applied directly during printing, without the need for painting.

– Scan Merge. To scan this model completely, I captured the top and bottom as separate scans and then merged them in JMStudio. Automatic alignment did not work in this case, as the overlapping geometry between the scans was very limited. I therefore switched to manual alignment and selected five reference points on each scan, marked in different colours and matched as points one through five. Using this approach, the alignment was successful.

Processing in JMStudio took care of the rest. It removed noise, fused the model, and repaired gaps. I was happy with the final result, as this scan is more than good enough to yn荡校园运动会笔 a miniature replica on a multicolour 3D printer. Projects like this are mostly done for fun, as memorabilia, or simply as decorative pieces.

In the past, I have also scanned a broken RC boat, reyn荡校园运动会笔d the hull and top parts using 3D scanning and 3D printing. Thanks to such scans a slightly larger, fully functional RC boat was yn荡校园运动会笔d and tested. Setup and 课中坏事

The INSPIRE 2’s packaging feels less ‘rich’ compared with the Revopoint MetroX, for example, the MetroX comes with a more substantial protective case. Unboxing the INSPIRE 2 is straightforward, though, and the included instructions are clear and easy to follow.

– Mobile Mode. The mobile setup didn’t take long to assemble, but installing the app and establishing a stable connection required a bit more patience. Depending on your smartphone settings, the phone may try to auto-switch Wi-Fi networks, which repeatedly disconnected the Revopoint device in my case. I eventually had to disable my router’s Wi-Fi to keep the scanner app connected consistently.

My INSPIRE 2 came pre-calibrated, and when I attempted to run the 课中坏事 process in the early stages anyway, the software informed me that the scanner was already calibrated and no further action was required.


Software: Revo Metro

I can confirm that Revopoint’s software continues to receive regular updates. Just like with the MetroX and Trackit, I ended up updating the software mid-testing to a newer version. The biggest additions since I last used Revo Metro are the shortcut to Revo Design and the ability to switch laser line modes during laser line scanning.

Also worth noting: Revopoint’s software naming can be confusing. There are several software programs to download with almost identical names, and I downloaded the wrong one more than once before finally getting the right version installed. I had a chance to share this feedback with Revopoint at the Formnext trade show, and Sienna agreed that having a single unified scanning software for all their scanners would be a user-friendlier approach.

From what I understand, some feature limitations relate to the overall product pricing structure. One example is that the automatic Dual-Axis Turntable tilt presets aren’t available to use with INSPIRE 2. The Dual-Axis turntable itself functions normally, but the advanced automatic tilt presets are unavailable. This sophisticated feature is reserved for more expensive scanners, such as MetroX and MetroY Pro.

– Scans Merging. This is where I had a learning curve when I first started using Revopoint’s software. For merging to work correctly, the scans need to overlap at least a little so the software can recognise shared features and align the angles. Once I understood that, the merging process became much more consistent.

– Cleaning Scans. In a few cases, I noticed that debris kept reappearing after cleaning in Raw Point Cloud mode, sometimes returning after merging or when switching between views. What worked for me was cleaning the scan in Mesh mode first, using tools like Erase, Smooth, and Remove Floating Parts on the mesh.


Testing and Results

Color 3D Scanning Mode

It is important to note that color 3D scanning works only in Feature – Full Field Mode. I was able to scan a popular 3D printer test model, Benchy.

The basic turntable included with the Premium edition runs independently. Revopoint INSPIRE 2 can work wirelessly and is very light to handle. In the picture above, it is mounted on the included tripod.

As you can see, it’s absolutely doable. With a bit more practice, I’m sure I can push the results even further. At this stage, I can clearly feel the difference compared to what I achieved with the MetroX. The INSPIRE 2 delivers both color and geometry, but the MetroX remains noticeably more capable in terms of detail and surface accuracy.


Marker Scan Mode Example

This scanner surprised me in Marker Scan Mode, as such laser technology is usually found in more expensive models like the MetroX. At first, this made me think the INSPIRE 2 might be a budget version of the MetroX, but I proved myself wrong. Despite sharing some scanning modes, the INSPIRE 2 differs in many ways, including its much lighter weight and overall handling.

– Reflective Markers. These help the scanner track the object more precisely, but they can also be time-consuming to remove from the model afterward. While scanning my RC boat prototype, I found that dedicating a black A1 sheet was a great solution. The markers stay on the sheet permanently, and the black surface is practically invisible in certain scanning modes. Highly recommended! It saves a lot of time and keeps the object clean.

– Scanning on the Side. In my first attempt, I tried scanning the RC boat prototype while it was positioned on a DIY boat holder. The top and bottom surfaces scanned well, but the seam area, where the two halves meet, resulted in rough patches and holes. After a few tries, it became clear that scanning the model on its side works much better. When scanning the boat on its side, the scanner was able to capture enough point cloud data to merge everything cleanly. In total, it took me three separate scans to successfully merge the full boat model.

Of course, as usual on yn荡校园运动会笔, I had to 3D print at least one of the scanned models. This time I drastically scaled down the RC boat prototype and printed it in PLA on the Creality K2 Pro. In this particular case, Creality Print software did an impressive job repairing the mesh (using Windows Services) and preparing it for printing. Now I can feature my ongoing RC boat project as a Christmas bauble or even turn it into a small keychain accessory.

My Christmas Tree will have a special decoration this year. It will also work as a reminder and a New Year’s resolution to continue certain projects. Printed in 3 colors on Creality K2 Pro. Revopoint INSPIRE 2 is totally capable of creating such memorabilia.

I find scanning RC model boats a particularly interesting area. Many older boats are handmade or heavily modified over time, and combining 3D scanning with 3D printing opens up a lot of possibilities for upgrades and custom parts. It gives builders extra freedom to redesign, reinforce, or modernize their models. Read more about RC boats, 3D scanning, and 3D printing here.

Mobile Mode Test Scan

As I mentioned in Setup area the mobile setup didn’t take long to assemble, but installing the app and establishing a stable connection took me some time. Depending on your smartphone settings, the phone may try to auto-switch Wi-Fi networks, which repeatedly disconnected the Revopoint device in my case. I eventually had to disable my router’s Wi-Fi to keep the scanner app connected consistently.

– Scanner Weight. The INSPIRE 2 itself (without the power bank) weighs just 190 g, and this is clearly one of the biggest selling points of the device. Scanning for longer periods with heavier, more expensive scanners can quickly become tiring, but the lightweight INSPIRE 2 makes handheld scanning noticeably easier and more comfortable.

I’ll continue testing the INSPIRE 2 in mobile mode, including scanning different objects and lighting conditions. More mobile-mode results and examples will be added to this article.


Compare to Other 3D Scanners

In comparison to other Revopoint scanners, the INSPIRE 2 sits in the entry-level segment, yet it surprisingly incorporates technologies usually found in more expensive models, such as combined structured light and infrared laser modes. As mentioned earlier, my first impression was that it might be a ‘budget MetroX,’ but in practice it has its own strengths, with lightweight design being one of the most notable. For many users, especially those who prefer handheld scanning, this alone can be a compelling reason to choose it.

Setup and 课中坏事

– Tripods. Sturdy tripod. All three tripods are of high quality, designed to hold equipment that requires stability.

– Scanner. The Hand-Eye frame is stable and does not require assembly. It is a one-piece carbon fiber 3D print. If such a frame were assembled, assembly cracks would cause a significant shift in accuracy.

– Cables. Cabling may feel intimidating at first. The long, color-coded cables have a secure and clearly assigned place in the case. Initially, I thought packing and unpacking them would be a hassle, but after a few scanning trips, I realised there is no reason to worry. There is plenty of space, and the layout is well thought out.

– Workspace. You will need a clear area of at least 2 to 4 metres between the scanner and the tracker. It is worth planning this in advance, especially in smaller rooms or shared spaces.

– Monitor / Laptop position. It is important to maintain clear visibility of the screen during scanning. I often found myself switching to (full-screen) mode to better monitor the tracking and scan progress. Positioning the laptop so it is easily viewable while holding the scanner made the workflow smoother. In the small garage, for example, I used two reinforced cases as a makeshift table for the laptop.

– Power ON. I had to restart the tracker (switched it off and on again using the button behind the unit) to get it recognized in Revo Metro 5. The restart worked. After that, I proceeded to the 课中坏事 stage.

– Gimbal 课中坏事 system. A key feature of Trackit is its gimbal-based 课中坏事 system. Accurate 课中坏事 is vital. Previously, it was required that the user rotate a 课中坏事 pole in their hands. Trackit now handles this step automatically, delivering higher precision.

– Scanner 课中坏事. Revopoint recommends running the Scanner, Tracker, and Hand-Eye 课中坏事 when the unit first arrives and repeating it periodically. Following the official video guide, I found that my scanner was already within tolerance, and the software proceeded directly to tracker 课中坏事.

– Hand-Eye 课中坏事.  Before submitting the alignments in the software, I had to adjust the 课中坏事 poles to a specific height, as my table was positioned lower than the standard height. Once submitted, the only way to reattempt the alignment was by physically moving the tracker.

Overall impressions. Auto-课中坏事 is one of Revopoint Trackit’s key selling points. Unlike previous-generation tracking scanners that required time-consuming and manual 课中坏事, Trackit automates the process—saving a significant amount of time and effort.

– Temperature. Generally, the temperature during 课中坏事 and scanning should remain consistent. The system will warn you if it’s too high or too low. In my case, a 10°C difference occurred due to a heatwave, triggering a re课中坏事 warning. I continued scanning anyway and, aside from some extra noise, didn’t notice a major impact.


Software: Revo Metro 5

During the testing of the Revopoint Trackit, software updates were frequent, each addressing various improvements and introducing new functionalities. I experienced a couple of crashes during heavy scans with around 50,000 frames, so I developed the habit of regularly pressing the “Complete” button to preserve the scanned data. I also began taking many small scans and merging them later, rather than attempting long, continuous ones. Similar to MetroX, both the software and scanning method require a learning curve to fully grasp and become familiar with.

– Merge. When scanning the boat model, I found the Merge feature very useful. Rather than trying to scan a complex, feature-rich object in one go, I scanned parts separately. This approach resulted in 1) lighter scan files that were easier and faster to clean, and 2) a quicker workflow overall. The cleaned scans could then be merged effectively using the software’s Merge function.

If you’re familiar with any 3D software such as Blender or Fusion 360, the basic cleaning tools in Revo Metro 5 will be easy to pick up. Cleaning and patching can be done directly within the software.

– Tips. These settings are worth trying to improve your workflow: 1) Target Point Distance – consider increasing this when scanning larger objects. 2) Fusion Point Distance – I found 0.4 mm to be optimal for balancing detail and processing speed. If your PC struggles with heavy scans, adjusting this setting may help before processing. 3) Uniform or Geometric Simplifier – helps reduce faces either across the whole object or on flat areas only.

– Modes. There are three main scanning modes: Tracker Scan, Multi-position Scan, and Marker Scan. Tracker Scan was the one I used most to explore the hardware’s capabilities — it requires both the tracker and the object to remain stationary. In Dynamic Referencing Scanning, by contrast, you can rotate the object as long as the system detects a small number of markers. Marker Scan, which originates from the older tracker model, remains available and is suitable for scenarios where the tracker cannot detect the object, such as when dealing with oversized parts.


Testing and Results

Apart from testing in my studio, I managed to try the Revopoint Trackit in a few different environments. I took it once to the local Model Boat Club and later to a small garage where a classic car was parked. One thing worth noting is that moving the scanner requires some physical effort. Fortunately, both the garage and the club are nearby, but even then, I definitely felt the weight of the cases. Additionally, I was carrying a rucksack with a laptop and a cable extension.

Scanning Model Boats in Track Scan Mode

On yn荡校园运动会笔, I recently wrote about the local RC Model Boat Club and how its members showcase replicas of real boats. Many of these RC boat models are handcrafted using traditional techniques and 3D printing.

According to Clive and Andy, the boat I was scanning (featured above) wasn’t performing well in windy conditions. The top was too heavy, and the hull didn’t sit deep enough in the water, making it unstable. That makes this case particularly interesting—3D scanning and 3D printing could be used not only to repair the model but also to optimize its design for improved speed and stability on the water.

Due to limited time, I didn’t plan to fully fix the boat, but I was curious to see if I could 3D print one of its main components—the hull. I quickly merged the scanned parts, transferred the result to Blender, and after alignment and solidifying, exported the model to OrcaSlicer. There, I scaled and positioned it for optimal 3D printing. At 50% scale, the print took around 8 hours to complete with supports.

I couldn’t replicate the full-size hull in one piece due to the bed size 400 mm × 400 mm × 400 mm limitation of my Snapmaker Artisan, which otherwise did a great job. A large-format printer like the Elegoo OrangeStorm Giga, with its 800mm x 800mm x 1000mm build volume, would be able to handle it. As RC driving components, including batteries, getting smaller and more efficient, some RC model boats can now be fully replicated using budget FDM or Resin 3D printers. In some cases, assembling the boat by gluing printed parts together is a practical approach.


Scanning Car Parts in Track Scan Mode

Citroën – 10CV or Rosalie, built in January 1934 in Slough, UK. Thanks to my neighbour Brian Murphy for giving me access to scan parts of his car. Although scanning inside a small garage was challenging, I successfully captured a few components.

For proper reverse engineering—where scanned parts are converted into CAD models for restoration, modification, or reproduction—it is usually necessary to detach the parts from the car to capture all required angles.

Here is the scan of the engine cover – it was accessible and straightforward to scan while still mounted on the vehicle.

3D scanning can play a valuable role in preserving and restoring classic cars. Beyond creating accurate digital records of rare parts, it enables reproduction through 3D printing, 公肉奉公hd中字 machining, or even casting. For parts that are no longer manufactured, having a clean scan makes it possible to design replacements or adapt components with precision.


Scanning Furniture in Multi-position Mode

As an experiment, I scanned a chair and a small table using Multi-position mode. This mode is generally best suited for objects that need to be flipped upside down to reach otherwise hidden areas, or when scanning from certain angles would be physically awkward. To my surprise, I was able to scan the small table entirely by repositioning it only once.

The recommendation is to set up a minimum of five tracking points—I used eight, just to be safe.

Since I managed to capture the full model in one session, I also completed a full scan-to-print workflow. I cleaned up the noise, removed the markers, filled the holes, and simplified the mesh to around 30MB—all directly within the software. From there, I moved to OrcaSlicer and used the Snapmaker Artisan for printing.

I’m really pleased with the result—especially since I didn’t need to use Blender for any additional mesh cleanup or editing. The miniature was printed on the Snapmaker Artisan in just 8 hours.

– Capture modes. For best results, the EINSTAR VEGA has two different scanning modes that each make use of cutting-edge infrared technology. Infrared MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems), a highly accurate technology that manipulates light projection and captures minute details using microscopic mechanical structures, is used in HD Mode. This produces incredibly accurate high-resolution scans, which are perfect for small-scale models, detailed textures, and complex objects.

In contrast, Fast Mode employs Infrared VCSEL (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser) technology, which projects a structured infrared light pattern to allow for quick, wide-area scanning. This makes it ideal for scanning larger objects, particularly in outdoor settings, as it enables faster data acquisition while retaining consistent accuracy. The EINSTAR VEGA provides versatility by combining MEMS for accuracy and VCSEL for speed, guaranteeing users can select the best mode for thier needs.

– Speed. The Vega has a fast capture rate of 15 FPS in HD mode and 20 FPS in Fast mode. The Vega also has an adjustable point distance of 0.05–3 mm in HD mode and 0.5–10 mm in Fast mode. This translates to scanning distances of 100–350 mm in HD mode for high-resolution scanning and 270–1500 mm in Fast mode, and it is excellent for scanning larger objects outdoors.

– Internal Storage. The scanner records color textures, which give you realistic 3D model scans. You can scan large objects, including color textures, easily with 32 GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 512 GB of internal storage, without the necessity to upload files to a PC to free up space while scanning.


Software – Einstar StarVision

The Einstar Starvision software is both PC- and Mac-compatible, and it has the same features as the scanner with some additional tools to allow for more precise editing. The software allows for more refined mesh processing options as well as enhanced editing capabilities.

Completed models can also be exported in several formats, including PLY, STL, OBJ, and ASC, so they can be imported into many different programs for further editing or modifications based on needs.

Testing and Results

With the wide array of possibilities, choosing test scans was difficult. For our testing, we conducted a few outdoor scans of my Jeep Compass on a sunny day, along with several small test objects to evaluate how well the resulting scans work for 3D printing. We also performed a full-body scan of myself as part of the evaluation. Models were exported using the Starvision software in .OBJ format for printing.

Multicolor Scan

The first test object was a small figurine included with the EINSTAR VEGA. This color figure, which serves as Einstar’s mascot, is an ideal subject for testing HD mode and the automatic plane removal feature. For these scans we had the resolution set to medium 0.25-0.50 mm with acquire texture, feature alignment as well as texture alignment checked.

Using a turntable and tripod, the scan took only a few minutes to complete. Once finished, we checked the mesh quality and color texture accuracy, automatically filled the bottom hole of the base, and then processed the model in high-quality mode.

The resulting 3D model was fantastic – the color reproduction was spot-on, and all the details were sharp and clear. We printed this model on the Flsun T1 3D printer using Sunlu Blue PLA+, and the print came out identical to the original figure.

We trimmed part of the base for a flat printing surface, but the mascot itself was captured perfectly, demonstrating that the Vega is an excellent tool for 3D printing users.


Bust Scan

Next, we scanned a simple bust using the same HD mode settings as the mascot. As before, the scan was clean, with no missing details or issues. The process was quick, thanks to the 15 FPS scan speed, and the Vega handled auto white balance and auto brightness exceptionally well.

We printed the finished model on the Flsun T1 using the same Sunlu Blue PLA+, and as expected, the print was nearly identical to the original bust.

Body Scans for Cosplay & Medical Applications

We then tested the Vega’s ability to scan the human body by scanning my head and shoulders, as well as my wrist and hand, to assess its usefulness for cosplay, prosthetics, and medical applications. The ability to accurately scan body parts is crucial for custom prosthetics, medical braces, and wearable costume pieces.

Using HD mode for the best results, I scanned my hand and wrist with no tracking issues, and the process was surprisingly quick. Even if tracking was lost, the Vega did an excellent job of regaining alignment by simply moving back to the previous position. My head and shoulders scan was also clean and detailed, though facial hair and regular hair presented minor challenges. However, these did not significantly impact scan quality.


Outdoor Scans – Jeep Compass

For our outdoor tests, we scanned my Jeep Compass, capturing the front grill and bumper on a sunny day with minimal issues. Since this was a large object with relatively simple geometry, we used Fast Mode set to 1.00-2.50 mm for quicker scanning, as we didn’t need the finer point distance of HD mode.

Although we lost tracking a couple of times, it was quick and easy to regain. The color accuracy was impressive, and the camera captured all the details of the Jeep’s exterior clearly.

Next, we opened the hood and scanned the engine compartment using Fast Mode again with color capture enabled. In under five minutes, we successfully captured the entire engine bay, making this an ideal application for mechanics or automotive modifications. With these scans, users can digitally measure components, design custom parts, or plan modifications with precise fitting.

The resulting engine scans were clean and highly detailed, though processing took longer due to the size of the object. Fortunately, thanks to the Vega’s 32 GB of RAM and 512 GB of onboard storage, handling large scans was seamless, and we had plenty of storage for multiple large scans before needing to transfer them to a PC.

The MetroX Advanced Edition, apart from spray, comes in one box. To protect the MetroX, it has a separate metal case. This sturdy case does look very nice and should do the protecting job very well.

The MetroX, designed for indoor use only, must always be connected to a power supply and computer. It is suitable for operation in mechanical workshops and car garages. Although the included dual-axis turntable is primarily intended for use in Auto-Turntable mode, I also found it useful as a platform in Cross Lines mode.

Revo Scan 5 MetroX

The well-known Revopoint Revo Scan 5 software now features a special MetroX-only edition. My testing coincided with the announcement, allowing me to evaluate the software both before and after the update. I observed that 3D scanning on my laptop became more stable and faster.

Requirements: Unfortunately, most 3D scanning and modeling software generally require powerful computers. I experienced difficulties with a few scans because my laptop wasn’t powerful enough. The scanning speed was the most affected, with micro lags delaying the process. In several instances, my laptop couldn’t process the scanned results, forcing me to avoid using the One-click Edit option and reduce the points count in the Fusion and Simplify tab beforehand. Update: with the new laptop, both the scanning and scan processing experience greatly improved.

– Tip. With an underperforming PC, remove marking and make the RAW file lighter in Fusion before processing in Mesh.

Initially, I skipped 课中坏事 and started scanning straight away. However, while using Auto Turntable Color Mode, I noticed that the textures weren’t aligning properly, so I decided to run the 课中坏事. The process was straightforward, with all instructions provided in the Revo Scan 5 software. I must admit, some patience and skill are required to calibrate it, as the device is heavy and holding it in a certain position takes time. I was pleased to find that the 课中坏事 fixed the texture mapping issues.

I thoroughly tested the MetroX by scanning various models in different modes. Here are my results, along with 3D prints produced from these scans.


Testing and Results

Marker Scan – Cross Lines Mode

This is the mode that worked the best for me and I feel it deserves high praise. It is a high precision mode where shiny metallic objects (not mirror shiny) can be effortlessly scanned with accurate precision. I would say engineering grade precision. Therefore, here and on social media, it is possible to find examples of scans of complicated designs effortlessly scanned in this mode.

– Pause, check, continue. Even with my slow and laggy laptop, I was able to scan my objects. Although I was short on time and my scans didn’t exceed 8k frames, I could see the potential nevertheless. Indeed, there are scans online with 80k frames. I found it a useful feature to be able to pause and check the scan before continuing, as it gives an idea if the scanning will work or not, saving time as a result.


– Merge Feature. After scanning both sides of the Snap-Off Blade Knife Handle, I managed to merge them using the Merge feature. I have to admit it took me a few attempts to get it right as alignment was tricky to master. It is important that both sides had overlays so the software could recognize the items’ positions. In the end, it worked for me, and I am super happy with the result.

– Markers. Another scan I did using Cross Lines Mode is the Handcrafted Basket Lid. Unlike with the knife handle, where I didn’t use markers on top of the object, in the lid’s case, I placed many of them on flat surfaces. ‘More Markers Required’ is a frequent message when scanning in Marker Scan Mode. More markers are better, but clearing the holes after them can be laborious, especially if they are placed on curved surfaces.

– Big Iron Cast Parasol Base. This is a tricky object. It is generally black with rusty orange spots, and the cylinder has no distinctive features. It took me a few attempts to get it right, one of which was in Marker Scan – Full Field Mode.

The scan was pretty quick. Applying the markers took me longer than doing a 3D scan. This generally gives the impression that even large objects, with enough markers, can be scanned precisely with intricate details. However, scanning the same object in Feature Scan – Full Field Mode didn’t work. When scanning the base, the ‘Lost Tracking’ error appears on the screen, and scanning the cylinder feature also didn’t work.


– Artisan Wooden Basket. We’ve had this basket for more than ten years now, and it seems like we will have to throw it away soon. Thanks to 3D scanning, I managed to preserve it in digital form and 3D print it as well.

It took me about 8K rendering frames to complete the scan. The One-click Edit feature did its trick, and I cleaned up the scan right in Revo Scan 5. Automatic marker removal and hole filling were straightforward using the tools on the right side of the software.

To 3D print such an object, I still needed Blender. There, I cut the base evenly and used the Solidify Modifier to make the wall 1mm thick. It worked very well. In the 3D printing Creality Print slicer, the object was additionally repaired and positioned for 3D printing.

To preserve certain features on the lid, I had to position the lid at 45 degrees and activate the Organic Support feature. The Creality K2 Plus did a good job printing such a volumetric object very quickly. It took only 9 hours to print it.

– Basket – Color Mode. Even though my basket looked too big for this turntable, scanning worked anyway. I fixed it with sticky dots to hold it on the turntable when it was at a 15-degree angle.

I haven’t proceeded with this scan for 3D printing just yet, but the result looks promising. Color Texture Mapping also worked well, making this basket suitable even as a 3D asset for virtual worlds, etc.

– Dual-Axis Turntable. The Revopoint Dual-Axis Turntable is a spectacular piece of hardware. It requires a Bluetooth connection to the laptop to set the desired turning angle and sequence, but it can also be used without a connection. It was straightforward to use, and slightly modified default settings worked well for me.

The main 3D scan cleaning was effortlessly completed using Revo Scan 5 MetroX. After exporting the model in .STL format and uploading it to the Orca slicer for 3D printing, it automatically detected and repaired common manifold issues. Then, with the addition of color painting and some support structures, the model was successfully 3D printed in multiple colors.

Featured above is our Easter Bunny model, which we use for various testing and concept designs. It was initially yn荡校园运动会笔d as a high-poly model, then decimated into low-poly art, sliced for laser cutting, glued back together, 3D scanned using MetroX, and finally 3D printed in dual color on the Snapmaker Artisan 3-in-1.

– Color 3D Scanning. It is important to note that color 3D scanning works only in Feature – Auto Turntable Mode. I was able to successfully scan the matte colored wooden handcrafted basket, but could not scan models with a shiny glossy finish such as miniature car models.
