Initial Overview

Setup Process

The Jayo J1 FilaDryer arrives with everything you need to get started. Inside the box, you will find the main drying unit, a storage chamber, a combined hygrometer and desiccant module, and a small set of parts for the spool rollers.

Begin by assembling the two bottom rollers and their bearings. Slide a bearing onto each end of the rollers, then seat the rollers into the lower section of the storage unit.

Next, insert the hygrometer module into the front of the storage box (the section with the clear display window). It slides into place and also houses the desiccant container.

Place the desiccant pack into its container. The included desiccant changes colour as it absorbs moisture, which makes it easy to see when it has been working and when it may need recharging or replacement.

Finally, install the filament holder into the centre section of the unit so the spool is supported correctly during drying and printing.

Once assembled, the dryer can be used as a standalone drying station or as a feed-through dryer while printing. The heating base houses the controls for temperature and timer settings.

Testing (Wood PLA Benchy)

Wood-based PLA blends are extremely prone to absorbing moisture, far more than standard PLA. When they take on water, steam pockets form during extrusion, causing bubbling, stringing, and rough surface texture. Proper drying is the quickest way to bring print quality back under control.

To demonstrate the impact, I printed two identical Benchies using the same gcode. The first print was done straight from the spool without drying. The second was printed after drying the filament for six hours in the Jayo J1, then storing it in the sealed chamber to reduce reabsorption.

Following the six-hour drying cycle, the humidity reading dropped significantly, and the print quality improved with fewer visible artefacts, smoother surfaces, and more consistent extrusion.

Mintion has built a strong reputation over the years for its impressive range of timelapse cameras, catering to FDM and resin 3D printing — and now expanding into laser engraving and cutting. These cameras not only allow users to monitor their projects in real time but also 凸凹人妻人人澡人人添 stunning timelapse videos perfect for sharing across social media. Having personally tested many of Mintion’s products, I’ve consistently been impressed by their build quality and performance.

In the world of 3D printing, heat press guns are a go-to tool for assembling parts using heated brass inserts. However, achieving consistent precision — especially in repeatable tasks — has always been a challenge.

Mintion’s newly released Heat Press Kit addresses this issue with a user-friendly, easy-to-set-up solution designed for accuracy and versatility. The kit includes:
– A powerful 90W heat press gun with a temperature range of 180°C to 500°C
– Multiple interchangeable press tips (sizes M2 to M8) for compatibility with a wide range of brass inserts
– Approximately 30 M3 brass inserts included
– A durable injection-moulded base for organized storage of all components

Setup Process

Installation of the Mintion Heat Press Kit is straightforward using the provided guide. Below are the eight main steps with visual references for each stage of assembly.

Step 1: Connect the extrusion to the base using one round hex screw. Tighten with the supplied Allen key.

Step 2: Slide the main heat gun unit over the extrusion. It should move freely. If it’s too tight or too loose, adjust the eccentric wheel on the runner.

Step 3: Attach the heat gun to the clamp and tighten the two screws using the supplied screwdriver.

Step 4: Connect the handle to the retractable unit using the clip. Push the clip firmly into place.

Step 5: Mount the combined handle and retractable unit to the top of the extrusion. Secure with the second round hex screw and Allen key.

Step 7: Install the two cable clips using the supplied double-sided tape. Attach to the two marked spots on the frame.

Step 8: Select your preferred heat tip (e.g., M3) and carefully screw it into the heating element. Avoid cross-threading.

Once fully assembled, the Mintion Heat Press Kit feels sturdy and well-balanced. The guided setup ensures even beginners can get started quickly with minimal guesswork.


Testing

So for the testing phase I wanted to carry out the process of installing the heat inserts both manually and using the Mintion Heat Press kit, to see if there was a marked improvement on final product and repeatability test.

I’ve finished installing all the heat inserts into the DeathRacer Kit frame—over 25 in total. Thankfully, the kit made the process much more straightforward. If you’re interested, the DeathRacer Kit is available for purchase on the Bigtreetech website.
The frame, along with several other components, was printed in PLA, so I stuck with a heat temperature of 200°C for the insert installation. That setting has consistently worked well for me with PLA parts.

– CryoGrip Build Plates. We tested two versions: Frostbite and Glacier.

  • Frostbite targets PLA and PETG only; adhesion is excellent at unusually low bed temperatures—about 30 °C for PLA and 50 °C for PETG.
  • Glacier is multi-material and needs a bit more heat—roughly 45 °C for PLA and 60 °C for PETG—but shows the same strong hold while releasing prints cleanly once cool.

My FilaDryer E2 arrived in a bigger box than usual, as it included an extra eight filament spools. I was informed that my device comes with the first batch of machines and that there will be some product optimizations where needed.

– What’s in the Box. The package should include the power cord, PTFE tubes, annealing tray, and heat-resistant gloves. However, the gloves were missing from my batch. I must say that gloves are essential for quickly handling spools and prints without waiting for them to cool down, as some spools become too hot to handle safely.

– Damaged During Handling/Transportation. Upon close inspection, I noticed that my FilaDryer E2 is damaged: one of its feet is pushed in. I have already contacted the SUNLU team to provide feedback, helping them address the issue and add extra protection or reinforcements where necessary.

To ensure that no electronics were damaged, I removed the bottom lid to inspect the device. Given that this is a high-temperature device with sensitive electronics, it’s always better to be cautious. To my relief, the area where the legs were pushed in contained no electronics. If the impact had occurred on the electronics side, there could have been potential rubbing against the wires.


– Design. Like the other devices in the SUNLU FilaDryer family (S4 and S1), the FilaDryer E2 has a sleek, transparent design with a bright green LED indicator that stops moving and lights up once the chamber reaches the assigned temperature.

– Airtight. Compared to the S4 and S1, the E2 is the most airtight, thanks to its rubber plugs and sealed lid. According to the manufacturer, placing a desiccant dehumidifier in the designated area allows it to function as a storage dry box. Another benefit of sealing is that the operating fans are less noisy.

– Touchscreen. The E2 touchscreen may not match the quality of those on newer generation 3D printers. But, it still allows for easy navigation through functions and complements the overall design of the FilaDryer series. All presets and settings were straightforward to adjust using the [SET] button along with the up and down buttons.

– RH 10%. The only aspect I couldn’t understand and wished was more precise is the humidity reader, which was always at RH 10%. However, the SUNLU site provided an explanation: If the product set working temperature ≥ 80 ℃, humidity detection module will be in a protective state (display humidity RH 10%) is a normal phenomenon when the drying box temperature is reduced to 70 ℃, about 20H, humidity detection module automatically restore the original precision.

– Instructions. The included operation instructions are quite handy. I got a quick sneak peek at the annealing mode settings directly from them. They also include helpful tips, such as: ‘For optimal drying, keep the silicone plug open during drying.’

– Safety. Safety is paramount with this 500W heating device, as high temperatures can rise quickly. According to the manufacturer, an alarm will sound, and heating will stop if temperatures become abnormally high. In my own tests outside the enclosure, temperature readings stayed within acceptable ranges. Needless to say, the device is made from fire-resistant materials. While I can’t offer a comprehensive assessment yet, after several hours of use, external temperatures remained within normal limits. See the thermal footage below.


Drying Mode

In our previous guides, we thoroughly explained the importance of keeping filaments dry and using filament dryers. To put it briefly, it’s essential for improving the quality of 3D prints.

One of the main features of the SUNLU FilaDryer E2 is its high-speed heating and higher drying temperature limits. By pressing [SET], you can cycle through the preset filament drying modes, such as PA(Nylon), CF(Carbon Fiber), ABS, and others.

As a quick test, I started a print on the Creality K1 using SUNLU’s Easy PA(Nylon) filament. While the model I chose wasn’t intended for engineering purposes, it produced an interesting result.

I was pleased to see the Creality K1 pull the filament smoothly without extra PTFE tubes despite entering the 3D printer at nearly a horizontal angle.

While the PA(Nylon) setting heated the chamber to 100°C (212°F), readings from an infrared thermometer revealed temperature variations across different areas, as hot air flowed in a counterclockwise loop from right to left.

The functional, themed sticky note holder printed very well in Easy-PA (Nylon) with a nozzle temperature of 270°C and a heated bed at 80°C. However, upon cooling, the thin wall in the holder area bent quickly. The print would have failed if it hadn’t been placed in the chamber for post-processing in annealing mode. See images below.


Annealing Mode

Annealing in 3D printing means heating a printed part below its melting point to relieve stress, improve stability, and enhance its properties.

I had a great example of a model that printed well in regular and exotic PLAs but showed an interesting bend in the holding area when printed in Easy-PA. I must admit I hadn’t used this material before, so there might be specific cooling settings to avoid this issue. Nevertheless, it was perfect for my task. I tested E2 annealing mode right on this model to see if it could fix the problem.

Annealing mode presets on the E2 range between 2 to 6 hours and temperatures of 80°C (176°F) to 100°C (212°F). In my case, I left my print in the chamber for about 10 minutes, during which it became soft and flexible. I could then carefully ‘massage’ the bent area back into its designed position, significantly improving the bend.

Physically manipulating different types of plastics is possible with a heat gun, but the results are often uneven. One side of the printed part might even get damaged before the other side has fully warmed up. In contrast, an annealing chamber ensures the entire model is heated evenly.

As a fun test, I placed a Benchy printed in white PLA into the chamber, and within about ten minutes, it became soft enough to squeeze with just two fingers. Poor Benchys – I have a feeling many more will become test “victims” of this device!


Importance of the Teflon Tubes and Setups

As instructions suggest, the Teflon tubes should be installed, especially if there is a sharp filament travel curve.

In my previous FilaDryer S4 review, I tested various setups with different printers and positions. However, the PTFE tubes provided with the E2 are quite short. I would recommend that SUNLU include longer PTFE tubes or offer custom-length options as an add-on for a more sustainable solution. For reference, here’s an example of the FilaDryer S4 setup on the Snapmaker Artisan.

The two PTFE tubes feeding filament to the Snapmaker dual extruder are over a meter long. When using such long tubes, it is important to use high-quality filaments with consistent diameters. Additionally, it’s a good practice to check for excessive filament feeding resistance. My XYZ Cube test print was completed without issues, as shown in a short YouTube video.

I like this setup and would love to have custom brackets to hold the S4 on top of the Artisan enclosure. Placing the E2 on the enclosure feels excessive and would complicate the use of the annealing mode.

Other Tests

As my SUNLU FilaDryer E2 testing continues, I’ve geared up with some very interesting engineering-grade filaments from SUNLU, including Easy-PA, PC-ABS, PA6-CF, and PA12-CF. I’ve also prepared filaments from Inslogic, such as ASA, PETG Pro, TPU 95A, and Matte PLA. Additionally, my shelves still hold ABS, PETG, and a variety of PLA. Slowly but steadily, I will cover these materials in various reviews and add the results here. No more invading the kitchen! Using the E2, I dried loose desiccant and sachets for approximately 30 minutes on full power. While it can be done faster in a regular microwave on defrost mode, having the option to do it in the workshop is both convenient and peaceful.

Why are Filament Dryers Needed?

Until now, we used to keep all filaments in sealed plastic bags with a piece of a desiccant dehumidifier and were generally happy about it. Of course, in a few years, filament quality in some spools became degraded due to general mishandling. Plastic bags either didn’t get sealed properly, were micro-pierced by a sharp filament end, or the silica gel stopped working, and we had no idea about it.

In extreme cases, our filament made a popping noise during extrusion, and some visible evaporation occurred. This is the source of uneven surfaces on the prints. When the water is heated, it boils and evaporates, leaving micro craters on the extruded filament and printed surfaces.

The opportunity to reverse the process and get the quality of the material back is very welcoming. This is where filament dryers may come to the rescue.

Moisture Absorption – Hygroscopicity

In our previous article, “How to Revert Filament Moisture Absorption,” Curry Lin explained how it works in detail. He even featured a chart showcasing how some filaments are more hygroscopic than others.

This is the second filament dryer from SUNLU, the S2, which stands out with its futuristic look. It has a compact build and a large touchscreen display, and it presents many metrics, including temperature, moisture, target temperature, timer, and material type. The settings are easy to see and use. With a maximum temperature that can be increased up to 70°C, the S2 can now dry a wider range of materials, such as PLA, ABS, Nylon, and more.

This build enables the filament to be fed to our Creality 3D printers. For the Ender 3 V2 Neo, the filament feed is straightforward and even safer than using the original spool holder on the top. It eliminates the risk of brittle filament snapping. The Ender 5 S1 also works well with this setup, even though its filament feeding mechanism is slightly unusual. 360° Heating: The heating element now wraps around the spool much more evenly, unlike the previous version, which covered only around half of the spool area. As the SUNLU S2 is designed as an active heated filament dryer rather than an airtight dry storage box, it does not include a dedicated desiccant compartment. This keeps the setup simple, with no desiccant bags to monitor or replace. However, for longer-term storage after drying, an airtight storage box with dessicant bags or vacuum-sealed storage bags is still recommended.

Eryone M2

Eryone M1 has a slim, snail-like design that has surprisingly many functions. It combines drying with the help of desiccant dehumidifiers and a heating option.

It was delivered in a box slightly bigger than a 1kg filament spool. It is designed to hold the standard 750g-1000g spools, but when I tested a smaller spool, it also worked. The smooth metal base surface and relatively light weight of the spool allowed it to roll in the box.

It took us about one day to decrease humidity from 46% to 24%. We had to switch the heating function back on several times because it stays on for four hours. The Bowden extruder-setup 3D printer, like Neptune 3, worked well.

Filament dryers with such a compact design could be the best solution for those with a limited budget and space.


DIY Solutions and Innovations

Even though many 3D printing-related brands launched filament drying products, many DIY solutions and tutorials are available online. These may look less appealing, but they are sometimes as effective as the commercial versions. Also, cost-wise, these are much cheaper to build, and volume-wise, they are more productive.


– IKEA Storage Box. Following one of the first results in a Google search, we found a video on how to turn an IKEA storage box into an effective dry box. Generally, many storage boxes and food containers that can be turned into dry boxes can be found online.


– High-Temperature and Annealing. High-temperature filament dryers enable the maintenance of advanced engineering-grade materials like PA-Nylon, PC-ABS, ASA, and CF-Carbon Fiber blends. The annealing post-processing feature allowing users to experiment and post-process filaments and prints in a controlled environment.

Storage bags are a popular method for keeping filament dry, and even simple food bags with a few desiccants can work in the short term. But over time, mishandling, weak seals, or unnoticed desiccant failure can compromise spool quality.

Included Accessories

The Polymaker PolyDryer includes the drying station, a PolyDryer Box, a combination hygrometer and desiccant storage box, and a pair of seals that can be attached to the Box, and a few spare parts. The included desiccant changes color as it absorbs moisture, which provides users a visual indicator of how much moisture is present during drying.

The PolyDryer doesn’t require much setup, but the desiccant container needs to be filled by hand before using the machine. This is a delicate process, as the desiccant beads are very small and will bounce all over a desk if you’re not careful (ask me how I know). Once the container is filled, there is a tab that needs to be removed on the battery compartment which will activate the hygrometer and provide a real-time reading.

The PolyDryer unit has a printed guide on the top of the unit that shows a breakdown of filament types sorted by the Power Level required to dry them, as well as the recommended times for each.

The interface on the front of the unit is simple and easy to understand, with a Start/Stop button controlling the unit, two buttons for increasing/decreasing the value on the screen, and a selector to toggle between time and Power Level.

Using the suggested settings for PETG (Power Level 2, 6 hours of drying time), I dried a spool of GreenGate3D Mars Red PETG that had been open and unsealed since 2020. It only took a few clicks to adjust the power level and get the unit started. The integrated hygrometer measured 44% when the filament was first placed in the box, and by the end of the six hour cycle it was measuring 25%.

Using GreenGate3D Mars Red PETG, I printed a Benchy on the Bambu X1-Carbon before and after the complete six hour drying cycle using the same gcode file. The model printed before shows significantly more stringing and voids where moisture was present, as well as an overall inconsistent appearance on sidewalls. The model printed after shows an improvement in overall quality and significantly fewer bubbles and defects. Once the print was completed, the filament was stored in a sealed PolyDryer Box where it remains protected from absorbing excess moisture.

The PolyDryer is designed to process a single PolyDryer Box at a time, but the printable ‘Double Barrel Mod‘ from Printables user 3DPrintSOS allows users to attach two boxes to the dryer at the same time.

During my testing of the PolyDryer, this was the only feature I found myself wishing for and I was happy to see that someone else had released a design to solve this problem. This is just one of several printable accessories promoted on the Polymaker Printables page, which highlights the close community engagement Polymaker has with its users.

Storing Filament with the PolyDryer Box

The PolyDryer Box is designed to be used as a modular storage solution, and multiple boxes can be used to store material when not in active use. By placing the plugs underneath the PolyDryer Box, the material can be stored in a sealed state for future use.

I tested several brands of filament including Polymaker, Prusament, and GreenGate3D, all of which fit in the storage box. For materials that readily absorb moisture or require conditioning before printing, having the material sealed and ready to dry is a critical problem which can be solved by the PolyDryer Box.

The packaging and the product itself gave me a good impression of the quality product. A neat protective case, a few cables, and brief instructions were included.

Compatibility. The TC002 should work with iPhone 7 and above, while the TC001 should work on Android/Windows devices.

The Phone of Choice and an TopInfrared App

TopInfrared App for iOS is available in the Apple App Store and App for Android/Windows is available on Google Play.
On my iPhone 12 Pro, the TopInfrared app was installed flawlessly. After attaching the camera, in one click I was able to see the surroundings in thermal colors.

The first time I saw something similar was more than 30 years ago when I was watching the Predator classic movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger. When Predator switched to thermal vision to track and eliminate his targets. This vision mode is typically referred to as ‘thermal vision’ or ‘infrared vision.’ It allowed the Predator to see heat signatures, which helps in detecting living creatures, even in complete darkness or through dense cover. Sorry for going off-topic.

App Customization

– Temperature. The ability to set up temperature parameters is one of the strongest features of the TCView series thermal cameras. For example, adjusting the temperature by 10-20°C or °F allows the observer to see a completely different picture, enabling us to identify and highlight temperature differences in specific components.
– Color Theme. The customization options allow you to choose from a variety of color themes or even 凸凹人妻人人澡人人添 your own. This flexibility is particularly helpful for those who suffer from color blindness to specific shades, enabling more accessible and personalized use.

Testing and Use Cases

To satisfy my initial curiosity, I started roaming around the house, viewing everything at different temperatures. It was no surprise that some walls in our semi-detached house were significantly colder than others. The TCView captured this very well, indicating it with a dark blue shade. I couldn’t resist experimenting by briefly touching the wall with my hand and capturing the result. I was astonished at how quickly the temperature transferred from my hand to the wall and remained there for some time.

Use Cases in 3D Printing

I used TOPDON TCView to capture 3D printing on my budget FM 3D printers, namely Creality K1 and Artillery Sidewinder X4 Plus.

Apart from the heated bed, the axis motors also indicated a change in temperature. The Creality K1 comes with an enclosure and has a controlled environment by default. The maximum, so far, temperature I could measure was 140°C on the nozzle.

– Vase Mode/Educational. It’s fascinating to see how the TCView captures the freshly molten and applied filament trails, especially when printing in vase mode. This method provides an excellent way to showcase and understand FDM 3D printing. Video coming soon.

– Bed Adhesion and Warping. With FDM 3D printers like the Prusa XL or Elegoo OrangeStorm Giga, which feature multiple independent heated platforms, such a device can quickly identify any temperature discrepancies. Consistent and balanced build plate temperatures are crucial for bed adhesion. Early detection of these discrepancies can help avoid errors in multi-day prints.

– Identifying Failing Hardware. For repair shops, this tool can be useful in identifying failing motors, extruders, motherboards, and possibly other electronic components.

One of the recent applications was testing the heat distribution of the SUNLU FilaDryer E2, a remarkable device designed for drying 3D printing filaments and annealing printed parts. Given the high internal temperatures, a thermal camera was essential for ensuring that no other components became excessively hot.

One of the most well-known objects in functional 3D printing is the wrench by Daniel Noree. Daniel is famous for his OpenRC models which are all functional. They say that if you manage to successfully print his wrench and make it work after removing the supports, then your 3D printer is calibrated well and the slicer settings are correct. We have to admit that our first attempt failed, but we got it right in the end. This model is very popular and was featured a lot in 3D printing related media.

Thorn Remover

Unique 3d printed tools can be used for such simple tasks as a rose thorn removing for example. Professional florists use thorns removers quite often. This could be a nice present for a gardener.

Tool Holder

For standard and 3D printable tools, it is possible to design and 3D print highly customizable holders just for specific cases. Elegoo added a nice test print file with their Neptune 3 Pro printers and it is one of the best examples. Fixes and Replacements

Do you have an office chair that keeps sinking under you? Chances are, you’ve got a failing gas lift cylinder on your hands. If you are the owner of a 3D printer, you can permanently fix your chair to the desired height with a simple 3D print job.

Recently functional 3d printing helped us to avoid a wardrobe disaster. One of the brackets holding a hanging rail broke sending all dresses down in a messy pile. We figured that it would be possible to design and 3D print the bracket. It took us 30 min to design and 2 hours to print the replacement in rigid.ink ABS.

While being designed, the brackets actually got upgraded, acquiring more strength and depth to support the rail. Disaster averted – the dresses are neatly placed back and waiting for their turn to go out 🙂

Brackets

This functional 3D printed item greatly helps to organize any 3D printing workspace as it holds a lot of filament spools. Joel Telling’s spool mounting bracket has been showcased and torture-tested in his popular videos. In addition, a themed 3D printing competition has been held on MyMiniFactory.

It is a popular trend in the 3D printing community to 3D print needed brackets for the filament shelves. My filament shelf story is not that peachy but with a happy end. PLA brackets broke after 3 years in service. Initially, they were wrongly printed as well, namely with no perimeter shells but only 20% infill. Look how the perimeter shells got split on one of the images. New reinforced ABS and PETG 100% infill brackets (plus one extra) are in place now.

It is important to keep in mind that not all materials are suitable for supporting heavy loads, and over time, plastic qualities might deteriorate. PLA, for example, may become brittle after a couple of years. ABS, PETG, and other stronger materials are much more suitable for such tasks. Also, it is recommended to print such an object solid with a 100% infill rate.

We have printed an SD card holder, a mobile stand, a wine bottle holder and various accessories. Our very first functional 3d printing item was an Artichoke Pen Holder. Customized Nozzles

Of course, we tried to design something functional ourselves. Here is our simplistic model. There is a lot of dust collecting in hard-to-reach places around the house, for example, behind the radiators. This is probably a concern in many households. Our vacuum cleaner Henry didn’t have a suitable nozzle to get through narrow spaces. Therefore, we designed a customized nozzle in TinkerCAD. It consists of several parts and is easy to print.

Mobile Phone Cases

Another popular useful 3D print is a mobile phone case. There are many 3D printable files available on specialized platforms. These models are easy to customize further. Mobile phone cases are great as protection from breakage. For our mobile case, we used a beautiful orange flexible filament that has a nice rubbery non-slip surface.

Useful Noise Dampers

For some 3D printers, like Original Prusa, we would recommend printing additional accessories, for instance, noise dampers by Hofftari. These dampers significantly reduced the noise that made it possible to work overnight without disturbing anyone.

Useful Stoppers and Blockers

Useful 3D prints must not be labeled as boring. A good example is a Hodor Door Stop by fixers who were inspired by the famous episode from the Game of Thrones. Here is another easy design that appears to be very functional and even money-saving: Temporary Flap Vent Blocker. As the winter temperature greatly plummeted and the heating bill skyrocketed, I checked for solutions to decrease drafts around the house. As a temporary solution, I decided to block my Ducting Air Vent for a short duration with a simple design.

It does not matter which color to print in, so we went for a dull white filament, to make the transformation more dramatic. Christmas Deer design by Yeg3D was perfect for our task.

Spray Painting 3D Prints – Top Things to Consider

Location

Spray painting should be done in the controlled environment with no draft or wind. Any items in the proximity to the spraying zone must be covered. Keep your camera at a safe distance if filming, as the tiny specks of paint can get on it. Even the slightest movement of air makes the paint particles spread and stick to anything in their path. A shed or a garage can be ideal for this. We would never recommend to do it at home.

Think in advance of the place to stand your freshly painted object, it may have to stay there overnight.

We found that spraying while holding a print inside a cardboard box worked well. It protected the surroundings from paint and sheltered the finished item from dust while drying.


Preparation

Before applying any paint or primer onto a plastic surface, make sure that it is free from any dust or dirt. We recommend to use fine sandpaper to make the object’s surface a bit less shiny and more adsorbent. After sanding, the surface should be brushed or wiped clean. The object can be primed before the paint is applied. This will treat the surface and help the paint to stick better.

Type of Paint

There are different types of spray paints: the ones transparent with just the glitter and the ones that actually apply the color. When using the first option, the original color of the make will come through. We also found, maybe unlucky with the brand, that it needed a lot of spraying and took too long to dry. The silver metallic spray paint though was incredible. It dried much quicker and was easy to apply.

Safety

– Safety: Spray paint is a hazardous product. It is flammable, toxic, and can cause harm when breathed in. In some shops, there is even an 18-age limit for some spray paints. Please make sure to wear appropriate clothes, rubber gloves, and a respirator. Have a look at the list of safety tools for FDM 3D printing at home.

Spray Painted Models and Gallery

Thames Embankment in central London is rich in historic artifacts. The lamp posts are decorated with interesting fairy tale creatures that attracted our attention. Spray paint made them look similar to the original.

– Spray-Painted Dragons. I haven’t tried yet to spray paint wiggling objects such as articulated dragons as I suspect that the paint will fall off the moving parts. Of course, it depends on the level of stress and the paint qualities. On static models such as Adalinda, featured above, the paint stays well for a number of years without issues.


– The Swan. Here is an example of a spray-painted Odile the Swan by Louise Driggers. Initially, I printed a few swans in different shades to use the leftover filaments. While swans in white and black PLA are perfect as they are, I spray painted in silver the models that have been printed in other color shades. They served as a great decoration for the silver wedding anniversary.

Before-After Gallery

Spray painting 3D printed models has a big potential. It is sad to see objects not being used just because of some minor flaws or dull colors. We know that there are more sophisticated methods of post-processing available, like airbrush or vapor smoothing for ABS, but spray painting is one of the easiest in our opinion.

Leading 3D printing influencers on social media realised this potential and jump-started their follower base and subsequent businesses using quality time lapses. But after watching one or two models arise from thin air, why do we continue watching time lapses?

Educational: Time-lapses are not just entertaining, they are also educational. There are so many settings to get right in the slicer software, and failures do happen. Time-lapse recordings give us a clearer picture of any issues, showing when and why problems may have arisen. Was it bad bed adhesion or an ignored Z-Hop setting? Of course, real-time recording with sound can offer a slightly clearer picture, but then there is much more involved: massive files, better equipment, etc.

Check out the example above: we failed twice to 3D print the Gayer-Andersen Cat (Scan the World) on Delta Wasp 2040, blaming bed adhesion in both cases. Even after applying 20+ skirt outlines in Simplify3D to hold the cat’s feet, it still didn’t work. But thanks to time lapsing, we discovered that the issue was the Z-Hop setting in the slicer software.


Saving Resources: As mentioned earlier, a successful time-lapse offers greater proof than a slicer software preview that your design is suitable for 3D printing. For makers, that means saving valuable time and resources.

Recording Time Lapse on FDM 3D Printers

There are multiple ways to 凸凹人妻人人澡人人添 3D printing timelapse even when inexpensive FDM desktop 3D printers are in use. The quality of the produced videos is highly dependent on the method and the type of machine.

OctoPrint’s Software Plugin OctoLapse

At the time of writing this article, OctoLapse time lapses are the best choice for FDM 3D Printers. Video stability is one of the primary reasons for its success. The extruder retracts just before each frame (picture) is 凸凹人妻人人澡人人添d.

Cons: Medium-to-hard to set it up properly. You need to install the OctoPrint software and OctoLapse plugin, and the video quality is highly dependent on focus and light. It also requires an investment of approximately $100-200 to purchase Raspberry Pi, camera, tripod and lights. Installation guides and YouTube videos are sufficiently helpful if you have some basic tech and coding skills.

Professional set ups are even more expensive, involving buffed-up DSLR cameras with lenses. Subsequently, every frame (picture) will be 5312×2988, taking up 3-4MB of storage each. To set up the camera by uploading gphoto2 to Raspberry Pi and coding we would recommend the following YouTube video by FormerLurker creator of the OctoLapse plugin.

Another way to set up the DSLR camera is involving the installation of a physical trigger release system to the side of the 3D printer. Check the YouTube video by GreatScott to setup for Original Prusa i3 MK3.

Pros: The pioneers who first managed to get clear and focused videos are time-lapse kings. Check out the profile of WildRoseBuilds, a talented designer and maker with 100k+ subscribers on Instagram. Another remarkable 3D designer, Kiljaidesign, successfully showcases his works on Twitter and Instagram.


3D Print Bed Mounted Camera

There are many different mounting systems available on file 镜子里看我怎么进入你 for any 3D printer. But truthfully, we were not impressed with the quality of recordings made by this type of timelapse. Chaotic extruder movements detract from the video, especially if the 3D printed model is wide in volume. Also, platforms like YouTube may request that you use their editor to edit your videos for stabilizing. In our opinion, it poses an unproven risk that YouTube may mark your video as possessing bad quality, reducing its chances to rank in related searches. Even if your video is in HD with clear focus.
But in some cases, you can still get a great result. Check out designer and maker 3DPrintDad’s mini videos on Instagram. Printed bed-mounted camera footage together with excellent video editing skills beautifully showcases 3D printed models.

Mobile App

All the methods we listed above require extra work to set up. Beginners may get scared off by all the hassle of finding a file and software and then setting up the whole system. In this case, using the mobile app is the easiest solution in the beginning stages.

Using mobile apps, Delta 3D printers are more timelapse friendly than Cartesian with moving bed. All you need to do is set up your mobile and ensure it stays sufficiently charged in the process. Our first time lapses were done with mobile applications. It is possible to compress a 20-hour print into a 3-minute video. By the way, it is easy to adjust the lapse time on any movie editing software. We normally use Microsoft Movie Maker (old version) to shrink the timelapse further.

Recording TimeLapse on Resin 3D Printers

Until recently, timelapse videos featuring resin 3D printing were a rare occurrence. This was partly due to the low popularity of resin printers in the 3D printing community, that could be linked to the messier printing and post-processing processes. But the influx of the great quality time-lapses by Uncle Jessy and Andrew Sink on social media got everyone’s attention.

Disclaimer: As the resin printing process is UV-sensitive, extra care should be taken when setting up the right lighting in the room.

GIF or MP4?

OK, finally you have your long-awaited recordings at hand – what’s next? Before doing anything else, plan in advance where you will publish your content. All social media sites have different requirements. Lightweight GIFs are tricky to make; to sustain focus and quality, a regular 10 sec timelapse GIF will be 10MB. Not many sites want you to upload a 10MB GIF. Reddit, for example, offers to turn your GIF into MP4 to automatically reduce the file size.
So MP4 is the better option then. Now how do you reduce the size of your video without losing quality? Use specialized websites to reduce video length and crop it to a smaller scale.

Footage Conversion Methods & Software

There are plenty of software that allow us to reduce, resize and enhance videos, and reduce file sizes.
– Images into Video. When we are dealing with hundreds of images, like after recording with ResinLapse or OctoLapse, we need to turn these into frames first. Wandershare Filmora and Movie Studio Platinum (Sony), and probably other movie editing software, can do the trick. Photos should be set to a 1 frame duration in Preferences.

– Quick Edits. Old, rusty, and unfortunately discontinued Microsoft Movie Maker (MS Essentials Edition) still can be used when a quick movie editing and reduction is required. There is a new Movie Maker available in the app store, but we haven’t tried it yet.
– GIF Making & Loops. After that, such mini videos (up to 100MB) can be placed into Ezgif for further editing, looping, reversing, reducing file size, etc.
