I recently spent time with the Sculpfun iCube Ultra, a smart, fully enclosed laser engraver aimed at hobbyists and small workshop users. Laser Module Choice

The iCube Ultra can be used with the standard 12W diode laser module or the dual version with the additional 1.2W IR laser module. The diode laser is the main option for wood, leather, slate, coated surfaces, and general hobby projects, while the IR module expands the machine into metal marking and similar materials.

The Sculpfun line has earned a solid reputation as a compact, beginner-friendly laser engraver range, especially for its cutting performance and built-in safety features. The fully enclosed design and the option to swap between diode and infrared laser modules give the iCube Ultra impressive versatility for a hobby-grade machine. It feels like a noticeable step up from earlier iCube models in both capability and refinement.

Safety was one of the first things that stood out to me. The enclosure is already reassuring, but the extra safety features really won me over. It has an emergency stop button and an interlock door, which cuts the laser out if the door is opened during operation.

Right out of the box, the build quality is immediately apparent. Unlike open-frame designs, this is a fully enclosed unit, and it felt sturdy rather than toy-like. Assembly was surprisingly straightforward and mostly plug-and-play, with only a few screws needed to connect the extraction hose.

The pre-wound belts meant I did not have to fight with belt tensioning, which is a big win for beginners. Tension can still be adjusted if needed, but it was good to see the machine arrive in a state that made setup feel simple.

The dual-module capability is a genuine highlight. The iCube Ultra works with the standard blue diode laser for materials such as wood and acrylic, but it can also take the optional 1.2W infrared module for metal engraving. I had a lot of fun using the IR module on stainless steel, where it produced clean, professional-looking results.

The optional built-in camera is also a useful upgrade. If purchased, it helps with positioning and makes placing designs much more accurate, which can reduce material waste.

The laser module is straightforward to install, but it is easiest if you first lay the machine on its side. Remove the two screws securing the laser bed, then tilt the unit over for better access. Once the bed is off, slide the laser module into the guide rail and secure it using the two bolts included in the tool kit. After that, connect the power cable and the module is ready to go.

Next, install the front protective cover. This updated cover is noticeably more rigid than the one on the previous iCube, which felt more flimsy and awkward to fit. It also now features an interlocked door, so you no longer need to remove the whole cover every time you swap materials. That is a much more practical design.


Design Features and Software Connection

With engraving speeds reaching up to 10,000 mm/min, the Ultra delivers genuinely fast performance. It is powered by a self-developed 32-bit high-speed engraving motherboard, which helps maintain smooth motion and consistent quality even at higher speeds.

The iCube Ultra offers a 150 x 150mm working area, which is plenty for many hobby-level projects. However, it does not include a reversible bed with a honeycomb surface. That would have improved airflow and made cutting wood or other materials more efficient.

SCULPFUN has introduced a built-in smoke filtration system on the iCube Ultra, which captures and filters smoke produced during everyday engraving tasks. For heavier cutting jobs, the machine also supports connecting an external higher-capacity air purifier to further improve filtration performance.

You can also add the optional internal camera, with its mounting position already pre-aligned inside the machine for easier installation. The Ultra also supports a rotary roller attachment, giving you the flexibility to engrave cylindrical items and expand the overall crafting capability.

The laser features a bright status indicator on the top front panel, giving an at-a-glance view of what the machine is doing. The colours are easy to understand: red indicates a malfunction, yellow signals that engraving has finished, blue shows the laser is actively running, and green means the machine is in standby. It is a simple but genuinely useful way to keep track of the laser’s current state.

The machine also includes a USB locking key that acts as a physical safety lock. Removing it instantly disables the unit, preventing anyone from operating the laser without the key. It is simple, but effective.

The final feature I want to highlight is the automatic focus button. Simply place your material on the workspace, lower the laser head to the correct height, and press the auto-focus button. This can be done with the door open, as it is not tied to the interlock shutdown system. After that, make any fine adjustments if needed.

Software connection is straightforward. Plug the USB-C to USB-A data cable into your computer and launch your preferred engraving software. The iCube Ultra is compatible with LightBurn, LaserGRBL, and the Sculpfun app. For this review, I used LightBurn, which recognised the machine without any issues.

The steps I used to connect the iCube Ultra to LightBurn were simple. Open the Devices tab, choose 性发视频 Manually, select GRBL, and name the machine “Sculpfun iCube Ultra.” Set the working area to 150 x 150mm and choose Diode Laser as the device type. Make sure the homing position is set to front-left, which LightBurn usually highlights by default.

Once saved, the new device appears in the list. Select it and set it as the default if you plan to use it regularly. LightBurn should then automatically connect, and the laser module should home to its starting position. If it does not, follow the LightBurn troubleshooting guide to track down any connection issues.


12W Diode Laser Test Results

– 3mm Plywood. For the first test, I ran both an engraving and a cut. The engraving was set to 60% power at 6000 mm/min using a fill pattern, followed by a cut at 100% power and 500 mm/min. The 12W diode handled both tasks impressively, producing a clean engrave and a precise cut. I would expect performance to improve even further with a honeycomb bed, especially for airflow during cutting.

– 5mm Plywood. For the second test, I moved on to a thicker 5mm wood sample to see how the 12W diode handled a more demanding cut. I set the engraving to 80% power at 6000 mm/min, then switched to 100% power at 200 mm/min for the cut. Once again, it cut cleanly and without hesitation, showing that this laser is capable of handling thicker materials with ease.

– Leather Keyring. For the third test, I switched to engraving a leather keyring. This one required a bit more care, not because of the laser’s capability, but because the curved shape of the keyring can throw off the focus. A few small magnets would easily solve that by holding it flat. Even so, the engraving came out beautifully and makes a great personalised gift idea. For this test, I used 50% power at 6000 mm/min.

– Aluminium Business Card. For the fourth test, I engraved an aluminium business card. This was a very quick engrave, but it still shows that the machine is capable of handling detailed images or wording. The settings I used were 50% power and 6000 mm/min speed.

– Scratch Paper. For the fifth test, I tried engraving a scratch card. These cards work by removing the top coating to reveal a rainbow-coloured layer underneath. For this test, I chose to engrave an image of my late Chihuahua, Teddy, who passed away a few years ago. The result came out beautifully and really highlights how creative you can get with this material. For this engraving, I used 20% power at 7000 mm/min.

– Slate Coaster. For the sixth and final diode-laser test, I chose to engrave a piece of slate. Slate consistently produces a beautiful finish and can capture fine detail in both images and text. Slowing the engrave can also 性发视频 a deeper mark, giving the artwork a subtle 3D effect. Once again, I engraved an image of my Chihuahua, Teddy, and the result came out brilliantly. For this test, I used 80% power at 6000 mm/min, opting for a lighter pass due to the complexity of the design.

1.2W IR Laser Test Results

– Stainless Steel Dog Tag. For this test, I only ran the IR laser on a single item, as no dedicated IR-compatible consumables were included. I had a metal dog tag available, which still provided a good indication of the IR module’s performance. I used 100% power at 4000 mm/min, and the result was excellent. Some light cleanup is needed afterward, as the process leaves a bit of debris around the engraved area, but the overall finish was spot-on.

Setup and Design

Setup is straightforward: unbox the M1 Ultra, remove the internal packing, connect power and the exhaust (or AP2 purifier), and attach Smart Air Assist if included. If you’re using the Riser Base, place the M1 Ultra on it, open the front door, and slide the honeycomb into one of the riser slots. Next, install the module needed for your project (laser, blade, pen/foil, or ink). Before your first job, download and install xTool Creative Space (XCS) on your computer, connect the machine via USB, then set up Wi-Fi and apply any firmware updates XCS prompts.

When you’re ready, use XCS’s workspace snapshot feature to capture a photo of your bed and material—via the iOS/Android app and send it to your PC running XCS—to align artwork precisely (especially handy on machines without a built-in camera). From there, frame your job; the machine will auto-check focus distance before cutting, engraving, or printing. For reference and troubleshooting, xTool’s wiki is excellent, with step-by-step setup guides, accessory how-tos, material settings, and clear diagnostic flows.


Design

Machine (Chassis & Ergonomics)

The M1 Ultra looks and feels like a purpose-built desktop appliance rather than a hobby frame. It’s a low-profile, fully enclosed metal chassis with a front access door that makes it easy to load sheets, mats, and the honeycomb when you’re using the Riser Base. Inside, a single multi-function carriage swaps between laser, blade, pen/foil, and ink modules without rehoming the whole machine, keeping the work area predictable. Cable and air routing are tucked away, with a dedicated port for Smart Air Assist and a rear path for the exhaust/AP2 purifier, helping with both fumes and noise. Ergonomics are bench-friendly: flat top, square footprint, and a lid/door combo that gives line-of-sight to the bed for framing (alignment is still primarily in XCS). Appliance-style I/O (power, USB, Wi-Fi) and easy filter access round it out. Paired with the modular riser and slide-in honeycomb, the design encourages quick context switches—paper to plywood to tumblers—without turning your workspace into a jumble of parts.

It connects via hose to the rear exhaust path and uses multi-stage filtration (pre-filter, HEPA-class, and activated carbon) to reduce odor and particulates. Airflow is ample for typical desktop jobs, and the compact, appliance-style form factor keeps noise and placement manageable in a home workspace. If venting to a window isn’t practical, AP2 is the most straightforward way to keep fumes under control.

Smart Heatpress and Stand (Optional Accessory)

The xTool Smart Heat Press is a compact, even-heating press designed for HTV and inkjet transfer work. The standalone controller lets you dial in temperature and time precisely, and it heats quickly to common presets for cotton, blends, and specialty films.

Paired with the Smart Press Stand, you get stable, hands-free operation and adjustable pressure via the stand’s side dial—great for consistent adhesion on larger graphics. Together they make pressing fast, tidy, and repeatable, with fewer scorch marks and edge lifts.


Software XCS

xTool Creative Space (XCS) is a unified, beginner-friendly app that speaks “laser, blade, pen/foil, and ink” in one workspace. You get layer-based controls, per-module workflows, live/snapshot bed alignment, image trace, text/shape tools, offsets and kerf compensation, node editing, material test grids, and job history. It runs on Windows/Mac, with iOS/Android apps that can snap your material and send it to XCS for precise placement. Firmware updates, device setup, air-assist control, and rotary/riser profiles are all built in, so you’re not juggling plugins.

Testing and results

Inkjet module

With the Inkjet Module, there’s a wide range of project types—stickers, inkjet transfers, greeting cards—and you can print on nearly any smooth, flat surface that’s compatible with inkjet ink. For this review, we used various holographic papers to produce a set of stickers, then cut them after printing. We set print strength to 85% for rich color and used the reference cutting settings, increasing pressure to 100 to ensure clean, through-cuts for each sticker. If you plan to hand out full sheets (or keep stickers together until use), lower the pressure for a gentler kiss-cut.

We also made several shirt transfers using inkjet transfer paper (readily available on Amazon). There are versions for light and dark fabrics; dark-fabric transfers also work on light colors and often appear slightly more vibrant. Be sure to make a clean contour cut—any unprinted film will be visible on the finished shirt after pressing. We applied transfers with the Smart Press and Smart Press Stand, using the standalone controller to set temperature and timer for proper adhesion. Pressure is adjustable via the dial on the stand’s support post. If you do a lot of iron-ons, this stand is a must-have for consistency and ease.
Overall, the Inkjet Module delivers excellent print quality. Colors are clear with no bleed, and the fine blade cut stickers cleanly. The iron-on transfers also pressed smoothly, without snags or tearing. That said, we’d welcome more software controls beyond simple intensity adjustments.


Laser module

Using the included 10W laser module, we focused on just a couple of projects—xTool is well known for its laser prowess, and with so many options on the M1 Ultra, we narrowed our testing to a slate tile and a painted canvas, both featuring Native-themed raven designs we 性发视频d for engraving. With the optional Riser Base, you can cut/engrave thicker or taller objects than with the M1 Ultra alone, and it’s required if you want to use the RA2 Pro rotary for tumblers or other cylindrical items. The 10W module’s smaller spot size favors fine-detail engraving; if you primarily need to cut thicker stock, the 20W module is a strong choice for throughput, though you may trade a bit of image definition on photo-style engraves. (For reference, the 10W typically manages one-pass cuts around ~6 mm basswood or ~5 mm opaque acrylic; thicker materials generally require multi-pass cuts and good air assist.)

Both pieces turned out excellent using the reference settings in XCS. The slate took about 2 hours and the canvas about 4 hours to complete. On slate, varying power on vector passes can produce distinct tonal shades, and grayscale artwork also renders nicely; adding a clear coat afterward helps the design pop. For the canvas, cleanup is simple—wipe with a clean cloth to remove any residue from the engraving process. A clear coat isn’t necessary on canvas but can be applied for added protection.


Pen Plotter

The M1 Ultra also works as a pen plotter, and it’s useful for far more than doodles. You can address envelopes and letter greeting/invitation cards with consistent, elegant text; draw line-art illustrations, coloring pages, planner/bullet-journal spreads, maps/diagrams, labels and sticker outlines; plus templates, stencils, and score-and-draw craft projects. Several colored pens are included, so multi-color designs are easy—set pauses between layers to swap pens, or group colors by layer in XCS. For best results, use a light-grip mat for paper/cardstock, keep sheets flat at the corners, and stick with the reference pen settings (they dial in lift height and pressure nicely).

In testing, we plotted sample text and a line-art image with the black pen on standard paper. The output was clean and even, with no skips, wiggles, or smearing. You can add hatching or cross-hatching fills for shading, then follow up with a blade kiss-cut to turn those drawings into stickers—registration stays tight since it’s the same machine doing both steps. Overall, pen plotting pairs well with the M1 Ultra’s multi-tool workflow when you want crisp graphics without firing the laser.


Blade cutting

We used the cutting blade for stickers and inkjet transfers, and also tested vinyl cutting. First, we cut an iron-on transfer of the StudioZombie3D logo in HTV and applied it with the Smart Heat Press and stand. Then we made a smaller logo in permanent adhesive vinyl for use on a variety of surfaces. Using the reference settings for both HTV and permanent vinyl, the cuts were clean and consistent—even the small letters weeded without trouble. On some machines, corners don’t quite meet and 性发视频 tiny “bridges” that tear during weeding; we saw none of that here. We also ran a multi-layer paper project: a nine-layer cat cutout. As with the vinyl, the reference settings worked perfectly—the cuts were clean and easy to weed.

Using the XCS app to photograph the workspace helped us save material by positioning designs precisely on the vinyl. And because the sticky mat isn’t limited to fixed sheet sizes, you can place odd-sized offcuts and make the most of scrap pieces—reducing waste and keeping costs down.


Foil Transfer

Another option with the M1 Ultra is foil transfer. This uses a rounded, stylus-type tip in the cutting module to press foil onto your design, applying it to a variety of materials. It’s great for invitations, greeting cards, envelopes, and leather; with the extra-grip mat, leather and other fabrics stay put. For testing purposes, we foiled simple text on construction cardstock. You’ll need to secure the foil sheet with tape—preferably a low-tack tape that won’t tear or mar the paper you’re transferring to.

Our results were clean and consistent, even with a fill pattern. As long as the foil is firmly secured, the reference settings produce a crisp transfer on a range of materials.

Initial Overview

The AlgoLaser Pixi is a compact diode laser engraver designed for entry-level users and hobbyists working in limited spaces. With a small footprint and lightweight frame, it is easy to set up and operate. It supports a range of common materials, including wood, leather, acrylic, and anodized aluminum.

Its 5W output and 100 × 100 mm work area suit small and detailed projects. Construction is solid for its class, with stable mechanics that help maintain alignment and consistent output.

The onboard software is functional, but for complex designs, Lightburn remains a strong option. For this review, the tests were carried out using only the built-in AlgoOS interface.

Overall, the Pixi is a beginner-friendly laser that is surprisingly capable for its size. With pre-installed projects, touchscreen control, and a fully enclosed design, it is a good introduction to digital fabrication.

Setup and 性叫视频

The Pixi includes a red protective enclosure that helps block stray laser light and improve safety. The lid has an interlock that disables the laser when it is open or tilted. The unit height can be adjusted by repositioning the legs using pre-drilled holes and screws, which helps when working with taller or bulkier materials.

A rotary tool can be added for cylindrical objects. The machine has a dedicated rear port for the rotary. After connecting the cables, switch the machine to ARR Roller Mode and apply the recommended settings. The Quick Start Guide could provide clearer Pixi-specific rotary steps, but setup is manageable with a brief check of the manual.

The unit’s height can be adjusted by repositioning the legs using a set of pre-drilled holes and screws. This allows users to accommodate taller or bulkier materials that might not fit under the standard enclosure, offering greater flexibility for a variety of engraving projects.

Rotary Attachment

The unit also features the ability to add a Rotary tool, and during my testing phase I will also carry out some functional tests with this attachment, this was added as part of my review but can be purchased at an additional cost, in the pack you will receive connections, tools and instructions. This Rotary tool can also be used on other brands of lasers with the additional wiring.

Installing the rotary attachment was fairly straightforward, though I did have to check the manual and figure out a few steps on my own. The machine has a dedicated port on the back for connecting the rotary, so once I plugged in the cables, things started to make sense.

The main challenge I faced was realizing I needed to switch the machine into ARR Roller Mode and tweak some settings for it to work correctly.

I think the Quick Start Guide should include more specific instructions for Pixi models. The Lightburn settings it provides are useful, but there should be clearer guidance on how to set up and use the rotary attachment with the Pixi.


Touchscreen and UI

Powered by the AlgoOS 2.4 the on-screen guide walks you through the setup process, and once that’s complete, you have full control over the unit without needing to connect it to a computer—a major selling point for me in a portable desktop laser. The display is very user-friendly, with clear sections for different categories.

At the top of the main display screen, several icons visually indicate the laser’s status, such as Wi-Fi connection, SD card presence, USB connection, and any error notifications.

– Projects The laser features a large catalogue of preinstalled files, ranging from images to brand logos, once you have selected your desired project to test, the screen then displays a list of materials you can laser onto, whats even more useful was the visual guide on power and speed levels, giving a visual representation of the project look. This helps guide you when making a choice on power output and how long the project will take to engrave or cut.


Design and Material Capabilities

The Algolaser Pixi features advanced laser technology that produces a fine laser spot as small as 0.03mm. This allows for highly precise cutting and engraving with an accuracy of 0.01mm, making it ideal for detailed projects like jewelry or model-making.

Pixi can cut and engrave over 300 types of materials, including:
• Wood: Cuts up to 13mm plywood and 20mm pine wood
• Leather: Suitable for detailed leather crafting
• Paper & Cardboard: Perfect for prototypes and creative projects
• Acrylic & Plastics: Cuts non-transparent acrylic and various plastics
• Fabric & Felt: Enables custom textile designs

Focusing the laser is straightforward with Pixi’s manual Z-axis adjustment knob. Users can quickly set the focus without tools, and the included focus tool ensures precise cutting and engraving results.

Pixi is a Class 1 laser device, featuring a fully enclosed design and a lock screen for safety, making it suitable for use at home, in schools, or workshops.

The user interface makes the operation simple. You can drag your design file onto the screen, position it easily, and fine-tune placement with on-screen controls for precise alignment.

Pixi also includes over-the-air (OTA) updates via its AlgoOS touchscreen system. This means it automatically downloads and installs software updates to keep the machine current and running smoothly.

The Pixi can be used in a safe and responsible manner with the inbuilt enclosure, exhaust pipe and connection, providing a way to remove harmful fumes away from the user and environment. If you have a fume extraction unit this will be even more useful.

Software – AlgoOS

All testing in this review was done with AlgoOS. The interface was responsive and reliable, making it easy to locate projects, run 性叫视频, and update firmware with over-the-air updates. Lightburn compatibility is available, but it was not covered in these tests.

Test Results

Engraving on Birch Plywood

For my first engraving test, I decided to use one of the pre-supplied images already loaded onto the Pixi. The built-in material selection and engraving colour scale made it easy to choose the finish I wanted. The interface shows how speed and power affect the outcome. Faster speeds with lower power produce lighter images, while slower speeds and higher power give a deeper burn.

For this test, I went with a mid-range setting, and the image engraved perfectly. The whole process took around five minutes from start to finish.

Engraving Leather

For my second engraving test, I selected a pre-installed image of a tiger. I chose “Scratch Leather” from the GreatCarve Scratch Leather Kit—premium laser-ready leather with a dual-layer design. When engraved, the top layer burns away to reveal a contrasting underlayer, creating a striking effect. Once again, I used the material selection tool on the Pixi and went with a mid-range speed and power to achieve a deeper engraving.

In addition to engraving, I also tested the cut function. You simply select the desired cut depth on-screen, and the software adjusts speed and power automatically. However, since the lowest depth available was 1 mm and the leather was only around 0.2 mm thick, it caused a bit of edge burning. Despite that, the overall process was smooth and easy to follow using the built-in guide.


Rotary Laser Engraving

For my third project, I connected the rotary tool to the Pixi. This required raising the lid height as outlined earlier, and plugging the rotary unit into the dedicated port at the back of the machine. Once everything was in place, I changed the operation mode to Rotary from the selection screen.

I used the Algotype feature to enter the brand logo and engraved it onto a paint-coated metal bottle. I selected the “Coated Aluminium” material setting and aligned the laser to the center of the bottle. After a few adjustments, the final result came out brilliantly—as shown in the image above.

For my fourth project, I decided to laser engrave some aluminum cards using the Algotype function. I typed in the desired wording directly on the touchscreen, added the brand name, and selected the correct dimensions for the card. As with the previous projects, I also chose the appropriate material preset from the list—this time selecting the aluminum option.

The Pixi handled the task smoothly. The engraving came out clean and precise, with no issues during the process. It was another great example of how effective the built-in UI can be for quick, computer-free projects.

This expansion is generally feasible, as the component parts and software modifications required are not significantly different.

What to Consider When Buying a Laser Cutter and Engraver

– Safety Features. We cannot stress enough how important safety features are, which often come as optional add-ons. These high-powered tools can be very destructive. For instance, a laser with 200 mW power may be safe to use with protective goggles only, but when using a 40W power laser, a special enclosure is also required.
– Power and Speed. The importance varies for different materials and project types. If you have a special project in mind, it is probably important that laser cutting, for example, is done in one pass, as it greatly reduces the time and results in a cleaner cut.

– Size and Work Area. Budget desktop laser cutters used for DIY projects don’t have a large work area and therefore can be positioned on regular tables.

– Special Room (Workshop) and Ventilation. Exhaust system is required. Laser engraving and especially laser cutting produce a lot of fumes. Such smoke is not just toxic to breathe, but it may also leave residue on various surfaces.

Speed, is mind-blowing. With the Luban default settings, I cut the main object, Heart-shaped Box parts by VectorPortArt, in just 25 minutes. It is possible to install the necessary number of rails to accommodate the material being used, following the clear and user-friendly instructions provided by xTool for conveyor system installation. The conveyor system demands a lot of room. When working with the full 9-foot length, leave a clear 9-foot space in front and behind the P2 to allow for unrestricted material movement. Adequate rail support, such as a long folding table, for example, is required for steady operation and can be simply folded when not in use.

Before beginning engraving and cutting, consult the user manual’s pressure chart to establish the right amount of pressure needed to securely grip the material and ensure smooth feeding. The Acmer P3 24W is the largest laser in the lineup, featuring a fully enclosed design and a built-in HD camera. It’s equipped with everything you need to engrave and cut a variety of materials. There are three laser module options available: a 2W infrared (IR) laser for engraving metals, a 2-in-1 module that combines a 10W diode laser with a 2W IR laser, and a 24W high-power diode module. Setup and Design

The Acmer P3 is easy and quick to set up. Just take the machine out of the box, remove the internal packaging, and then take out the two gantry blocks that hold the X gantry in place at the back. The laser module can then be installed by sliding it into place and fastening it with the two locking screws on the mount’s side.

Next, attach the power cable and air hose to the machine’s side to connect the air pump. Once everything is set up, turn on the device, connect it to your computer, and then calibrate the integrated camera.

Acmer provides clear, easy-to-follow instructions for connecting and calibrating the camera using LightBurn, which we’ll be using for this review. To calibrate the camera, you’ll need to position the 性叫视频 board in five different spots and ensure each is clearly picked up by the camera. Once that’s complete, you’ll run a test engraving and click on the four corners to align the overlay with the camera view.

I recommend taking an extra step: do a small test engraving — like a box — then update the overlay to ensure accurate alignment. LightBurn’s camera tab includes controls to fine-tune the overlay, helping you get the best possible match. Once everything looks right, be sure to click “Save Settings” so your adjustments are preserved for future sessions.

Design

On the design side, Acmer went with a sleek black aluminum body, topped off with a UV-blocking acrylic lid that houses the camera and allows you to safely monitor engraving and cutting progress. The power button, key lock, and emergency stop button are conveniently located on the front right of the machine for easy access. The switches for the light and exhaust fan are positioned at the rear — slightly inconvenient, but not a real issue since they typically remain on during operation.

There’s also a TF card slot located inside the front of the machine on the right side, just behind the emergency stop button. You’ll also find a port for the USB camera and an extension port here for connecting a rotary attachment (sold separately).

The workspace features a honeycomb bed that’s ideal for engraving and cutting. It’s secured to the pull-out drawer with two screws at the front, preventing any shifting between projects. The drawer itself makes it easy to remove materials and clean up debris generated during use.


Software – LightBurn

For all testing conducted during our review, we used LightBurn for design, control, and operation. While the Acmer P3 also supports LaserGRBL and the Acmer mobile app (available on Android and iOS), LightBurn remains one of the top choices for laser engraving and cutting thanks to its powerful feature set, clean user interface, and wide compatibility. It’s a professional-grade tool that offers fine control over every aspect of the engraving and cutting process — though it is worth noting that it’s a paid program.

Acmer makes it easy to get started with LightBurn by including a configuration file for the P3 on the SD card bundled with the machine’s accessories. This allows for a quick and hassle-free setup, especially for first-time users.

One limitation to be aware of is that LightBurn requires a USB connection to the Acmer P3 for the duration of any job. This means you’ll need to keep your computer tethered to the machine during operation, which could be a minor inconvenience depending on your workspace setup.

When using LightBurn, there isn’t a built-in material library with preset settings, due to the wide compatibility of laser engravers. Fortunately, Acmer includes a reference sheet with recommended engraving and cutting settings for a variety of materials to help you get started. LightBurn allows you to 性发视频 and save custom settings for different materials, making it easier to adjust parameters for future projects.

To get the best results for your particular material and design, it is always advised to experiment with different speed and power combinations. For instance, by varying speed and power when working with slate, you can produce a range of shades and a striking contrast. With vector files, this method is particularly effective because it allows you to apply different settings to different areas of the design.

Although a little more difficult, image engraving on slate is still possible. Use LightBurn’s greyscale mode, set your minimum power to 15–20%, and use your usual maximum power setting for optimal results. You can better control the final image’s tonal range and detail as a result.

When using LightBurn, you’ll need to enable overscan to ensure the laser module can reach the higher speeds you set. In our testing, we found that setting 5–10% overscan allows the laser to ramp up properly and achieve full speed as it moves across the work area.


Testing Results

Wolf on Slate

For our first test, we chose to engrave a large piece of slate. Thanks to the generous 400 × 400 mm workspace of the Acmer P3, it’s easy to work with a full 12” × 12” slate tile. For this project, we used an image I designed of a wolf using Leonardo.ai and Pro性发视频.

To add more sharpness and clarity, we set the image to negative, chose the Atkinson dithering mode in LightBurn’s image settings, and set the enhance radius to 7 and the enhance amount to 120. A line interval of 0.050 mm was chosen.

We set a speed of 20,000 mm/min and a power level of 65% for the engraving itself. Just under three hours were needed to finish the task, and the outcome was breathtaking. Once a clear coat is applied to improve contrast and finish, the wolf head’s sharp detail and the surrounding border truly stand out.

You can take on more ambitious projects and genuinely broaden your creative horizons with a workspace this size.

Native Raven on Anodized Aluminium

Next, using another unique design I made of a raven with a native theme, we used an 8″ × 6″ piece of anodized aluminium. We used the same image settings, such as the same dithering mode and contrast enhancements, from the prior wolf engraving test for consistency. For our engraving settings, the Acmer P3 was set to 20,000 mm/min at 50% power.

The entire task was completed in less than an hour. After finishing the engraving process, we cleaned the surface with isopropyl alcohol and a clean cloth to remove any fine dust or residue. The final product was impressive, with each line and element of the design looking clean, neat, and extremely detailed.

Scaling up production is simple with the P3’s roomy 400 × 400 mm workspace. You could engrave several business cards in a single run with flawless alignment by making a basic jig and using the HD camera.


Native Raven on Acrylic

We also cut a larger piece of black acrylic into a square and then engraved an image onto it for our subsequent test. We set the machine to cut at 300 mm/min at 100% power using another raven design I made. In order to get cleaner, more accurate cuts, we also made sure to activate the air assist. In a matter of minutes, the cut was finished.

We then engraved the raven image onto the larger acrylic sheet after removing the cut square from it. We adjusted the image settings for contrast and clarity, just like in our earlier tests. We set the power to 50% and used a speed of 28,000 mm/min for the engraving itself.

The engraving took approximately 12 minutes to complete. Despite accidentally bumping the piece and causing a slight misalignment, the final result still looked fantastic, with sharp lines and excellent detail.

Moon Box

We decided to cut and engrave a decorative box design that we discovered on Etsy for our last test. This specific design included a moon-themed engraving on the lid, a living hinge, and a basic snap-lock mechanism. We were able to finish the project in a single pass without having to move the material because of the Acmer P3’s roomy workspace.

For the task, we utilized a 3mm basswood sheet. We set the speed for the cutting process at 600 mm/min at 100% power, which resulted in precise, clean cuts. We set the power to 75% and used a speed of 28,000 mm/min for the engraving. Although Acmer advises engraving at maximum power for faster speeds, we chose to reduce it a little bit to get a softer finish to the engraving.

The entire process took just under an hour. All pieces separated easily, the living hinge moved smoothly, and the moon engraving came out beautifully. The box assembled tightly, though we recommend using glue to ensure long-term durability, even if the snap-fit feels snug.

Setup and Design

Setting up the LP5 is relatively straightforward. Begin by attaching the electric stand to the base plate using the supplied screws. Next, attach the LP5 unit itself to the stand. You’ll then need to attach the protective cover; in some cases, you may need to power on the laser and raise it to make room. Once the setup is complete, connect the fan cable to the back of the laser using one of the supplied cables to attach the laser to the electric stand.

– Safety Key. Finally, insert one of the USB safety keys to enable the laser. LaserPecker includes two keys with the unit in case one is lost, so be sure to keep them in a safe place.

– Slide Extension. For the slide extension, attach the two cutting pads to the base unit. When ready, position the extension and connect it to the back of the laser using the supplied USB cable. For the rotary extension, secure the rotary unit to the base plate using the provided screws. Attach either the jaw pieces or the stud pieces, depending on your project, then slide the tailstock support into the track, and you’re ready to go.

– Connectivity. Overall, the LP5 setup is really easy and quick. You can use the USB cable to connect the device to your PC or configure the WiFi using the mobile app. You can link your LP5 wirelessly to the device if you have a WiFi connection.

One key thing to remember is that the laser must be physically connected to the PC via cable in order to enable USB laser engraving. This is a limitation that might possibly be addressed in a future update. Also, with embossing projects, it is preferred to use USB mode because the size of the file is large which makes it hard to transfer over WiFi and can cause issues during the process.


– Design. Following the sleek style of previous LaserPecker designs, the LP5 maintains the aesthetic but in a larger form factor. Although slightly heavier, the LP5 remains portable and stands out with its inclusion of both a 20W diode laser and a fiber laser.

– Deluxe Package. The Deluxe Package comes with several useful accessories, including a slide extension for working on larger pieces and a rotary extension with tilting capability, making it easier to engrave hard-to-reach areas. A base plate is also included for cutting projects, which is recommended to prevent marking or damaging the LP5’s base.

– Cover and Fan. The LP5 features a protective cover and a powerful exhaust fan, which includes an extendable hose. You can connect it to an external ventilation system or vent it out a window. The fan effectively removes dust generated by the embossing or engraving process.

– Cooling. The LP5 machine is relatively loud due to the serious cooling required for fiber lasers. While many companies opt for liquid cooling systems, LaserPecker has cleverly engineered a more stable, portable design featuring a large heatsink cooled by a powerful fan. Although somewhat noisy during operation, this cooling is highly beneficial for the laser, maintaining its temperature during extended periods of engraving or embossing.


Software – LaserPecker Design Space

LaserPecker provides its own software, LaserPecker Design Space (LDS), available for PC, Android, iOS, and macOS. Personally, I prefer using the PC version of programs whenever possible, as I find it easier to work with and more feature-rich compared to some mobile apps, which can occasionally lack certain functionalities.

LaserPecker LP5 Modes and Settings

If you’re using the LaserPecker LP5 for the first time, you’ll need to connect it via USB and click “Connect.” Once connected, navigate to the device settings to configure the WiFi, enabling wireless operation.

LDS includes everything you need for cutting, engraving, and embossing, with a simple layout that places all your settings on the right side of the screen and provides a large workspace.

– Embossing. For embossing mode, you’ll need to load a depth map image. After loading, click the image icon at the top left of the workspace, then select Grayscale to enable embossing mode. While there are preconfigured settings for scoring and cutting, there aren’t any predefined options for images, so some experimentation may be needed to achieve the desired results.

– Settings. The LP5 uses slightly different settings compared to most lasers on the market. For the diode laser, the key settings include Power, Passes, and Depth. Increasing the depth slows the operation while reducing it speeds things up. For the fiber laser, you’ll need to adjust settings such as Laser Frequency, Passes, Power, and Depth. Depending on the material you’re engraving, there might also be a Duration setting, which determines how long the laser remains on each spot, measured in milliseconds. Higher duration values typically correspond to slower engraving speeds.

One drawback of the software is the lack of an estimated time display—only a percentage is shown. This can make planning challenging, especially for projects that require several hours to emboss, depending on the material. I spoke with LaserPecker, and they confirmed that a timer feature will be added in a future software update.


Testing, Materials, Settings and Results

For all of our tests, no reference settings were provided, so we had to experiment to determine the optimal configurations. Smaller engraving projects are lightning-fast on the LP5, while embossing can take several hours – some projects require 5 to 6 hours, depending on the settings used. We hope that a future software update will include more reference settings for users to select directly in LDS, making the setup process much easier. Until then, please find the materials settings for all LaserPecker machines on their website. It’s worth investigating materials and settings before planning a project.

– Embossing Brass Coins. For our first test, we chose to 性发视频 a few challenge coins. Being a fiber laser, the LP5 is ideal for making these coins, as well as embossing wood, slate, and some types of stone. For the two coins, we used the following settings: Power at 100%, Depth at 30%, Frequency at 26%, and a Layer Height of 0.01mm. Each coin took just under 5 hours to complete.

– Post-processing. After embossing, we ran a cleaning pass with the settings adjusted to 50% power and 4% depth. This helped remove some of the residue. We used a wire brush attachment on a Dremel to complete the polishing, which cleaned the coins nicely. Any discoloration was easily removed with brass polish. The finished coins looked fantastic, with details that truly stood out.

We also tested a coin included with the LP5, featuring a wolf head design. While we didn’t know the specific settings used, the engraving process took about 4 hours to complete. The test file also turned out exceptionally well, showcasing great detail and depth.


– Slate Stone Engraving. Next, we tested a pair of slate coasters: a smaller piece and a larger serving tray-sized piece of slate. For both designs, we used the same settings: Laser Frequency at 26, Power at 40%, Depth at 30%, and a resolution of 8K, using the fiber laser.

The smaller slate coaster took approximately 40 minutes to complete, while the larger piece required just over 5 hours. However, the results were worth the wait. The image detail on the slate is stunning, with remarkably clean and precise engraving.

It’s also possible to emboss slate in the same way as the coins, but this process can take several hours, depending on the complexity of the design. On 性发视频, we offer a detailed guide on laser engraving on stone-like materials. Embossing on slate stone takes it to a whole new level.


– Engraving on Brass Pendants. Next, we engraved a gold dog tag using an image of a raven that I generated with an AI image tool on Creative Fabrica’s Flow platform. This tool allows you to 性发视频 various styles of images using prompts. AI tools like these can be incredibly useful if you’re unable to find the right design to engrave. While it may take some trial and error, they are excellent for generating unique images when you’re stuck for ideas.

Using the fibre laser, we engraved the raven image with the following parameters: resolution of 8K, frequency at 26, power at 50%, and depth at 35%. The end result demonstrates that even though increased resolution takes longer, the image quality is exceptional. Less than five minutes were needed for the engraving process, and the result was a stunning piece with a distinct and noticeable design.



– Engraving on Jewelry. Next, we have a small brass pendant on a chain. These are great for gifts or for products you may sell. The simple design was found on the Creative Fabrica website as a pair of earrings. Settings: Using a fiber laser with a frequency of 55, 60% power, and 40% depth produces a dark, prominent engraving on the brass pendant. The process took less than three minutes, and the results were fantastic.

– Engraving on Basswood. As a last fast test, we used the diode laser set to 50% power and 25% depth to engrave the StudioZombie3D logo on a wooden keychain. The logo took roughly 4 minutes to engrave at 1K, and the finished product was excellent – clear and sharp.

Another quite helpful section on their website is the materials settings for all LaserPecker machines. It’s worth investigating materials and settings before planning a project.

Boasting the most compact design in its class for a 20W diode and fiber laser, the LP5 shines in versatility. We tested it on a variety of materials, including its grayscale embossing mode. The LP5 is particularly suited for batch engraving, with optional rotary and slide extensions that enable seamless adaptation for projects of various sizes.

Its work area ranges from 160 × 300 mm with the slide extension to 100 × 100 mm for square shapes and 120 × 160 mm for elliptical patterns. Additionally, the LP5 can cut metal up to 1 mm thick and engrave a wide range of materials. With a maximum speed of 10,000 mm/s, engraving tasks are completed faster than ever before.

Smart Enclosure

LaserPecker also offers an optional safety enclosure for the LP5. This enclosure adds several important safety features, including an automatic door sensor that will halt operation if the door is opened during engraving. An optional fire suppressant system, sold separately, can quickly and safely extinguish any fires that may flare up during use.

The enclosure also includes a dual exhaust fan that effectively removes smoke and dust generated during operation. Another upgrade included with the enclosure is the new smart camera. You’ll need to use the mobile app to set up the camera before it can be used with the PC software. LaserPecker provides a detailed guide accessible via the software near the camera controls. While the setup process is a small inconvenience, it may be streamlined in future software updates.

It’s also recommended to calibrate the camera before use, as alignment may be slightly off. The easiest method is to engrave a small shape – such as a circle or square – onto a piece of scrap wood. Then refresh the camera image to check if it lines up with the engraving. If it doesn’t, click the gear icon in the camera settings and manually adjust the overlay until it matches the engraved result. Once you’re satisfied, save the configuration under a custom name like “Tuned Camera.”

You can also use the rotary attachment or the Smart Roller attachments with the enclosure. There is a USB port for connecting them on the inside rear bottom of the enclosure. When you’re ready to engrave or cut, you can still use the red dot alignment method. However, thanks to the enclosure’s features, you can also enter the object’s thickness, and the platform will automatically adjust its height to bring the object into focus. After that, refresh the image, align your design or text, and begin engraving. A quick note: even though there is a camera, it’s always a good idea to double-check alignment using the preview option to ensure everything is perfectly positioned.

Desktop Air Purifier

The desktop air purifier system further enhances the safety enclosure by increasing the exhaust capacity to remove smoke and dust faster than the built-in fans alone. With its 4-stage HEPA filtration system, it can remove up to 99.97% of smoke, fumes, and airborne particles produced during engraving or cutting.

The purifier also features a convenient handle for easy transport, and four adjustable speed settings depending on whether you’re engraving metal at low intensity or cutting wood and acrylic at full power. The Elegoo Phecda is the first Elegoo laser I’ve reviewed. Having reviewed their extensive range of FDM printers, I was well-prepared to test the Elegoo Phecda laser and see if it had the same build quality and neat design as the printers. Setup and Design

Unboxing and setting up the Elegoo Phecda was a breeze, taking only about 30 minutes. The process was straightforward, with only a few steps that required some time and attention, such as installing the two belts into the corners and fitting the cables due to the tight space. However, these were minor hiccups in an otherwise smooth setup process.

The UI touchscreen has many functions, enabling you to switch between standard cutting engraving and using the rotation device, which I found convenient and user-friendly.

The Elegoo Phecda has an innovative gantry setup with an air filtration system, which I would call a moving enclosure setup. The air filtration system has a removable charcoal filter with concertina dust and filter mesh on both sides. It did filter out some of the smoke but only worked if the air assist was not connected because the front UV screen could not be installed for the air assist tube to move.

I found the air assist tube very problematic. I tried to find a way to install it without hindering the laser unit’s movement, but luckily, it was only needed when cutting and not engraving.

I did like the idea of the laser light-blocking panels. They meant that you didn’t need an enclosure until you used the laser for cutting using air assist.


Software – LightBurn

After the setup, it’s just a case of checking everything, ensuring it is square and all cables are in the sockets, plugging in power, installing the software you want to use, and connecting to the PC. For my tests, I used Lightburn, which I am used to.

Enclosure

This review package came with an enclosure and a rotation device, which were both used in this testing. The enclosure was used because of the problem with the air hose catching and not letting the laser move. But I would always recommend buying an enclosure just for safety. The laser light-blocking panels and the extraction setup make the working environment more user-friendly and ensure a secure working environment.

The enclosure that Elegoo supplied was easy to set up. It took about 10 minutes. The corners and lid Velcro together, then it’s just installing the four bolts to hold the fan, which has its own power supply. It also comes with a decent length of extraction hose, which gives the user a better chance of placing the tube through a window. Also, it has a UV window to the front and top so the user can still see the project.


Testing Different Materials

To test and review the Elegoo Phecda 20-Watt, I chose different materials and techniques to showcase its capabilities. I have done some cutting and engraving with wood, engraving on Anodized aluminium, cutting and engraving 3mm Acrylic, and engraving on slate and powered-coated metal. The 20-watt laser unit performed very well. It can cut thick wood and engrave in fine detail, as you hopefully will see in the projects and materials I’ve used.

First, I tried some blue anodised aluminium cards, which I engraved with my logo and Elegoo’s. These didn’t take much time, even with some high-detail parts. They were engraved in one pass at a decent speed.

Wood Cutting and Engraving

Next, I did some wood cutting and engraving simultaneously, adjusting the power and speeds of the different project sections. The engraving and cutting came out clean with a nice finish, showing the laser has a decent-sized laser dot for a 20-watt unit. The Hellraiser box I cut and engraved, I think, shows the significant details of how fine the laser can engrave and how precise it cuts with the tab joints on all the sides.

Plus, the Easter projects show how clean the cutting detail is with the complex front on the hinged basket. The precision of the Elegoo Phecda’s cutting and engraving capabilities is truly impressive.


Acrylic

We then tried to see if we could cut and engrave acrylic, which many people ask if a laser can cut. I used a product from Great Carve, which is 1.5mm scratch acrylic with a solid background and a coating that can be engraved to show the background colour. I cut and engraved both in one pass with some excellent results. I was surprised at how clean the cuts were, even on such a detailed design.

A friend gave me this design. It’s one of her own, but I just had to try it as I liked it. So, incorporating acrylic into the wood design instead of either painting or foiling the pieces made it pop out. Also, using up the cutouts in different sections to fill the bee in or just adding a bit to a couple of the honeycomb edges showed how cleanly the Elegoo Phecda coped with the cutting.

Natural Slate

Then, I used some of my favourite materials: natural slate. These can be bought easily and are not expensive, but they make beautiful gifts or just for your home. These were also done in one pass at the same speed as wood but with higher power.

I used one of the engravings from the box to show off the incredible detail that can be achieved on the slate, plus adding Elegoo’s name to the centre. Rotary Attachment – Powered Coating

Then, we tried the rotation device add-on using an old powered-coated travel mug. The rotation device takes a couple of minutes to install. It’s just a case of removing the y-axis cable from its socket and installing it from the rotation device.

The mug was an old one, but it was the only one available at the time. I usually don’t use these types of mugs, and it was my first time trying engraving on thick, powered-coating mugs, not anodised ones. The result still came out nice, even with no testing.

One thing I liked about the Elegoo Phecda was its easy-to-set function on the UI screen to swap between standard engraving and rotation device normally; it can only be done on the laser program, not the UI screen. The rotation device performed nicely and did great on the travel mug.

– Instructions. It was tricky to find the instructions using the QR code. They provide a full list of videos dedicated to Snapmaker Artisan assembly and setup, but the video I needed first was the 10th on the list. Here is the link to the machine body assembly. Overall, the video tutorials were very helpful. For example: As the machine parts are bulky and heavy, using the packaging foam as a supporting structure was a helpful trick.

– Included Enclosure. While enclosures for other Snapmaker products are optional and all parts are included in their respective boxes, the Snapmaker Artisan enclosure is shipped by default. Machine parts, such as the laser and 性变视频 modules and work plates, were found in the enclosure box.

I have mixed feelings about fixing the acrylic UV protective screens with sealing strips; I might even prefer the previous A350T assembly method that used screws. However, the final result was neat and sturdy. The assembly process went smoothly, thanks to their paper and video instructions.

Setting up the enclosure on top of the machine requires two people. Once assembled, we placed the Snapmaker Artisan in a convenient corner of my workshop, close enough to the window for the exhaust pipe. I had hoped to fit everything on one table, but unfortunately, the additional add-ons like the air purifier and air assist required extra space. Also, keeping the controller on top of the enclosure in the long term may require extra support fittings.

It’s important to note that no more than 7 kg should be stored on top of the enclosure. This is worth remembering, as storing many items on top of the machine can be tempting. There is a sticker on top of the enclosure as a reminder.


Design and Optional Add-Ons

The Snapmaker Artisan Premium boasts a sophisticated and polished design. Most of its components are made from metal, making it feel heavy and sturdy. The enclosure’s LED lights add a cool, modern touch, especially when the 3D printer is operating in the evening with other lights off. The build platform can also double as a photo studio, making it convenient for examining or photographing completed projects.

– Controller. Compared to the controller of the A350T, the Snapmaker Artisan’s controller is much more sophisticated. Its wider and better screen allows for effortless navigation and fine-tuning of settings during operation, making it easier to use. Additionally, its placement outside the enclosure ensures a cleaner and safer environment for the controller, especially during dusty 性变视频 or smoky laser projects.

– Stop Button. The controller also features an emergency stop button, which is required by regulations for high-watt lasers. I tested the button once during a print to try the pause-and-resume option. It caused the controller to emit a continuous high-pitched noise – a lesson learned: it’s strictly for emergencies!

– Quick Swap System. Switching between the three disciplines – 3D printing, laser engraving, and 性变视频 – has become significantly easier compared to older Snapmaker versions. What used to take 20–30 minutes and involved extensive screwing now takes less than a minute for module and build platform swaps.

– Optional SnapDryer. Collaborative product by Polymaker and Snapmaker. Solution for drying and storing filament. It has been a significant time-saver for me while operating a dual-extruder 3D printing module. Previously, I had to store filament in plastic bags overnight to protect it from humidity, only to reload it again in the morning. Not anymore! – Optional Air Purifier. I haven’t used the Air Purifier during 3D printing, but I always use it for laser engraving and cutting projects. It effectively collects smoke. The only drawback is that replacing the cartridge filter will cost extra. In my case, the air purifier works well. Our occasional custom laser projects and tests haven’t overused the filter yet. – Optional Rotary Module. Essential for laser engraving and 性变视频 4-axis projects, this add-on enables the creation of high-precision designs from a variety of materials. I’m excited to try it out during my laser and 性变视频 testing. Find more details on the official website.

– No Camera. In 3D printing, having a camera to monitor progress and review timelapse videos of completed projects is quickly becoming a standard feature. Unfortunately, there is no official Snapmaker add-on available at the moment. However, on the Snapmaker forum, many users have opted for inexpensive third-party cameras, and I must say, some of these options are quite good.


3D Printing Mode

If you are eager to try all three functionalities on any Snapmaker 3D Printer, then the 3D printing mode should be tried first, as it is the cleanest compared to Laser and 性变视频. Here’s a YouTube video demonstrating the installation of external filament holders and the first filament load. I found the video guide to be more helpful than the paper instructions.

Dual Extruder, Quick Nozzle Swap System and Heated Bed

What instantly impressed me was how easy it is to swap hotends in the extruder. During my testing, I effortlessly switched to a larger 0.8mm nozzle and back again. I also appreciated the quick access to the gears, which made it easy to check if the filament had properly entered the hotend.

What to Watch? – Common Errors. Here are the errors I encountered and their quick fixes.
Error Code 13-8 ‘MAXTEMP Error-Nozzle Rt’. It happened when I was swapping the hotends. Readjusting the hotend fixed the issue.

The large enclosures demand lengthy PTFE tubes, so extra precautions must be taken to avoid triggering “Error Code 13-12” by ensuring no excessive filament feeding resistance. In my experience, printing successfully recovered when the filament feeding tension was released. If, in the beginning, I had a few filament feed-related errors, then I started feeling the system. Mind the filament flow!


Luban and Orca Slicer Software

The first time I used Snapmaker’s Luban was a few years ago. Since then, the software has become significantly more stable, faster, and easier to use. While more advanced and constantly evolving slicers like Orca and PrusaSlicer are available for 3D printing, Luban is more than sufficient for beginners. Its simplicity can be an advantage, making it less intimidating and more accessible to those with less experience. The Wi-Fi function makes it convenient to transfer G-code files to the machine using the Luban software.

I printed a few models from the Luban library and was generally satisfied with the results. However, I struggled with the custom support placement and block functions. While Luban offers highly praised organic supports feature, I found it challenging to optimize it. This is where the new Snapmaker Orca performed much better for me. Check out my SnapDryer Double Barrel Mod print in the testing area for more details.

– Snapmaker Orca Slicer. I had the chance to try it – and I liked it. As Orca slicer becomes increasingly popular in the 3D printing community, there are plenty of tutorials available on YouTube. It was easy to find specific functions applicable to my projects while testing the Snapmaker Artisan. The preloaded Snapmaker Artisan presets made my tasks even easier.

Extruder Order Feature – I struggled to find this

To my delight, I could use an existing .3mf preset originally designed for a different brand of printer. Thus, I didn’t need to manually color-paint the Knitted Snowman print featured above. Many designers are now publishing .3mf presets alongside STL, which is incredibly convenient and time-saving.

I can see why Snapmaker Orca will likely become the preferred option for Snapmaker Artisan users in 3D printer mode. This software is widely used in the 3D printing community, meaning many users are already familiar with it and can easily find features to optimize their settings. The dedicated 3D printing open-source community continually adds fantastic new features for everyone. Big kudos to them!


Testing Dual Color Printing

Initially, I misunderstood the 性叫视频 process and significantly misaligned the extruders. The second attempt went much better. The popular dual-color modified XYZ-Cube test print, from Luban’s featured designs, came out with the desired result.

– Live Tune. I must say, live tuning via the controller offers many more options, including flow rate, compared to the older A350T firmware versions I tried a few years ago. Live Z-tuning is straightforward during printing, making it easy to make adjustments when needed.

– Heated Bed and Bed Adhesion. The Snapmaker Artisan’s heated bed is the first non-flexible build platform I’ve used in years, and I’m pleasantly surprised by its performance. The grip is excellent when the bed is heated, and removing objects is effortless once it cools down. The added ‘Inner Zone/Outer Zone’ feature on the screen is a thoughtful feature.

I had to use Magigoo from Amazon once when the tiny tail of a Flexi Rex model got knocked off during printing. Flexi Rex would have worked without glue if I had fine-tuned the settings slightly more. However, I recommend using extra bed adhesion when printing multi-part models with independent bases, such as flexible articulated dragons, for example.

My favorite print so far is the Knitted Snowman by Utsav Genesis, mainly because it turned out beautifully, even though I used a .3mf preset file designed for a different 3D printer. Snapmaker Orca Slicer handled it very well. The only adjustment I made was slightly reducing the purge tower, which was initially twice as large. Filament waste is minimal since the tower is hollow. I think I could have slightly adjusted the retraction settings to minimize random bits and achieve an even cleaner print. It took 7 hours to print on normal settings.

For the eyes, I used black matte nail varnish – though I could have done a better job with finer detailing if I had a smaller brush. This Snowman caught the attention of our friends; the knitted effect is truly captivating.


Testing 0.8mm Nozzle

I tested printing with TPU and wood filaments using a 0.8mm nozzle and found that the quick hotend swap is a very powerful feature. How to change the hotend to 0.8mm – instructions via screen. Larger nozzle sizes are an obvious choice for the Artisan’s large build volume, as they make vase mode prints sturdier and significantly speed up project completion.

– Wood filament. A wider nozzle allows for experimenting with exotic filaments like wood filament. The wood filament can be tricky to work with – the closer it mimics real wood in texture and smell, the more challenging it is to handle. Using a larger nozzle is highly recommended. I haven’t yet attempted prints that require a lot of retractions, so vase mode was the obvious choice. On 性发视频, we have an extensive guide about the wood filament and how to handle it successfully.

– TPU. A quick vase mode print was straightforward. I’ll update this section once I print more objects with this filament.

– PETG. Following the designer’s recommendation, I printed two stands using a sturdier material than PLA – PETG in my case. I was not happy with the results from either slicer software, Luban or Orca. The print from Luban included supports even for the logo, as I failed to block supports in the slicer. Also, I definitely needed to fine-tune the support settings in Snapmaker Orca. Then, I was cheeky and 性发视频d a file with organic tree supports but without a purge tower – the print result turned out worse than with Luban. While both prints were functional, excessive supports, even in dual-material mode, affected the print quality. Additionally, I used a non-brand PETG, so there’s much more I could do to achieve better results.

After testing various challenging prints, including multi-color and different nozzle sizes, I’m impressed by the significant improvements in 3D printing compared to my previous experience with the single extruder on the A350T. I highly recommend the dual extrusion 3D printing module for other compatible Snapmaker versions as well.


Laser Mode

Disclaimer: Laser cutting and engraving may be hazardous if improperly operated. Please make sure to follow the safety guidelines such as wearing eye-protective goggles and using the machine enclosure while operating.

Luban and LightBurn Software

If Orca (and Snapmaker Orca) slicer is the best software for 3D printing mode, then LightBurn is the best 3rd party software for laser cutting and engraving. I haven’t connected LightBurn directly to my Snapmaker Artisan just yet, as for most of my projects Luban software did the task. However, when it came to modifying the file, I had to turn to LightBurn.

To minimize the waste of the material, at some point one of my projects needed quick editing. In LightBurn, it was easy to select and remove elements and save it as a new file. In my case, it worked well with the .dxf file extension.

In all other cases, I used Snapmaker Luban. I appreciated the wide variety of fonts available for custom text, as well as the collection of free shapes in their Shape Library.

– Metal. While testing the Snapmaker Artisan, one of my favorite materials for testing 2W IR lasers was snap-off blade knife blades. These blades allowed me to experiment with engravings without worrying about wasting material. As a result, I ended up with a collection of blades featuring interesting engravings.

If the brown, rust-like dust is cleaned off, the engraving results become more visible, revealing varying levels of detail – some more pronounced than others. Since different settings were used, the results also varied. Apart from the 性发视频 logo, I was pleased to explore the extensive collection of fonts for text and elements available in the Luban library.


– Black PLA. PLA is one of the most popular materials in the 3D printing community, with dark grey and black filaments widely available. To my delight, a 2W IR laser produces highly precise and visually appealing engravings on this material. For testing, I printed four Flap Vent Blockers – a simple yet functional design that helps reduce drafts and, in turn, lowers energy bills during particularly cold and windy seasons. The Shape Library in Snapmaker Luban offers a selection of basic shapes for engraving and alignment. In addition to using custom text and shapes from the library, I incorporated the 性发视频 logo and even a previous picture I once used as an avatar. The results are truly astonishing.

– 3mm Acrylic and 3mm Plywood. To test the 40W laser module on Snapmaker Artisan, I performed a series of laser jobs on different materials, including plywood, softwood, ceramic, and acrylic. As usual, I will add more examples in due process.

To showcase the versatility of the 3-in-1 combination, I aimed to feature designs that could be both 3D printed and laser engraved/cut on the same machine. Several projects were successful in this regard.
– Sliced 3D Model. One idea is to slice the 3D model in order to laser cut it and glue it together. Such a trick can be quite attention-grabbing. Have a look at Andrew Sink’s Plywood Benchy – his make inspired me to try the same with our own model. Featured above is an existing Low Poly Art Bunny model that was initially designed for 3D printing, then it got sliced in the Autodesk Slicer App for a laser cutting job.

– Scaling Tips. It is tricky to scale such an object as the material thickness defines Z in the result anyway. But it is always possible to add an extra material layer to even out Z (model height) as required. Featured above is a combination of 3mm acrylic and 1.5mm plywood laser cut sheets. I glued together wood and acrylic using wood glue.

This model was very easy to cut. Using a 40W laser, it took approximately 30 minutes. It is a good idea to cut the model itself but engrave the numbers in order to not get confused when assembling the model. LightBurn again helped with separating the numbers from the .dxf file, and Luban had all the needed material setting presets.

– 1.5mm Plywood. Another model that was initially designed for 3D printing and then got converted for laser cutting and engraving is our Post-It Note Holder. Snapmaker Artisan prints, cuts, and egraves on such an object without issues.

For this particular design, I had to use 1.5mm plywood in order for notes to stay in the slots. A 40W laser that is capable of cutting up to 20mm softwood is definitely overkill for such thin wood material. Greatly reducing the laser power is recommended. For me, it took less than 5 minutes to engrave and cut such an object.



– Ceramic Tiles. Absolutely loved the way the 40W laser engraved on ceramic green tile. I experimented on a leftover kitchen tile by adding a silly design that I found in the Shape Library via Luban. Without coating, the quick engraving job took only 8 minutes to complete using Luban’s Line-Filled Engraving preset setting.

I think there is great potential as plain tiles can be easily customized with all sorts of markings and even logos. The drawback is that such engraving work only on dark-colored tiles. On lighter tone tiles, such etching will be less visible. On the other hand, there are all sorts of coatings available to engrave even on white tiles. – 20mm Softwood.
40W is definitely a very powerful laser. I had a chance to test two such laser modules, and they both cut 20mm softwood I had on hand.

It is tricky to get the settings right though, and even the slightest tree knot will be a problem. Here are my settings for cutting softwood I had on hands: I 性发视频d multiple G-codes to cut the material in a single pass and single straight line with different settings. One the Pass, Job Speed: 100mm/min, Power: 100%, Initial Cutting Height Offset: -4mm As you may noticed on the image above other cuts were not that clean as Initial Cutting Height Offset was changed to -2 and 0.

– Error 20-6. Unfortunately I could not finish similar projects I had done with A350T (look below) as when the excessive smoke in the chamber a few times triggered Error 20-6 ‘Visible Flames Detected’. I decided to stop stress testing my machine after that in order to presserve laser for the future projects.

As I already had 性变视频 experience with the Snapmaker A350T, this time I decided to start by testing the optional 4-axis module. Here’s my experience from unboxing to final results.

As expected, the module arrived in a well-presented, almost luxury box, with three extra bits and three composite wood dowels included. A full list of parts and accessories can be found at the end of the product page on the official website.

Luban and GIMP

Despite having significant experience in the maker space, I still had to spend time learning and wrestling with the Luban software to achieve something close to my desired custom result: wrapping the 性发视频 logo around a dowel. As you can see, it took several fruitless tests before I made real progress.

One of the biggest issues I had was Luban’s simulation preview. It was inaccurate, and even the sliced preview wasn’t clear enough to understand how the end result would look. Initially, 3D model prepared in Blender didn’t work as expected. Later, .PNG file prepared with the help of ChatGPT and GIMP produced results closer to what I wanted.

Similarly to router bits, some websites offer a wide range of 性变视频 materials to work with. At the same time, we found it very convenient to source the right materials directly from Amazon, which often covers most project needs — from wood blocks and dowels to MDF sheets, acrylic panels, composite boards, and even aluminium stock for cautious soft-metal machining.

For example, after extensive testing with the 4-axis module, we discovered that the three included material blocks were not enough. By browsing Amazon, we found inexpensive yet high-quality wooden dowel rods that proved ideal for continued testing and practice.

As a multi-disciplinary craft machine, the Snapmaker Artisan stands out with few direct competitors. Another versatile system featured on our website is the xTool M1 Ultra, though it differs significantly in both focus and functionality.

Introduction to 2W 1064nm Infrared Laser

– Difference Between IR and Blue Lasers. Red, infrared (IR), and blue lasers in laser engraving differ in wavelength, precision, and material compatibility. Red lasers operate at a wavelength of 635–670 nm, suitable for marking light or reflective surfaces but lack the power for deep engraving. Infrared lasers, with a wavelength of around 1064 nm, are ideal for engraving metals and dark materials due to their ability to penetrate surfaces more effectively, making them a popular choice for industrial applications. Blue lasers, at 445–450 nm, offer higher precision and energy density, excelling at intricate engraving on materials like wood, acrylic, and leather, but are less effective on reflective metals.

Each type of laser serves specific applications based on its unique properties, with IR lasers dominating industrial use and red and blue lasers being more common for creative and hobbyist projects. Recently, brands manufacturing desktop laser engravers for hobbyists and small businesses have begun offering 2W 1064nm IR lasers in their product lineups.

– Materials. A 2W Infrared (IR) laser operating at 1064 nm is highly effective for engraving and marking a wide range of materials, including metals like stainless steel, aluminum, brass, copper, gold, silver, and titanium; plastics such as ABS, polycarbonate, acrylic, nylon, and polypropylene; and ceramics, stone (slate, granite, marble), and dark glass. It also performs well on painted or powder-coated surfaces, PCB boards, and rubber. Known for its high precision and versatility, a 2W IR laser is ideal for detailed engraving and marking tasks across both metallic and non-metallic materials, offering non-contact marking without damaging the surface.


What to Engrave? – 2W Infrared Laser Projects


– Metal. While testing the Snapmaker Artisan, one of my favorite materials for testing 2W IR lasers was snap-off blade knife blades. These blades allowed me to experiment with engravings without worrying about wasting material. As a result, I ended up with a collection of blades featuring interesting engravings.

If the brown, rust-like dust is cleaned off, the engraving results become more visible, revealing varying levels of detail – some more pronounced than others. Since different settings were used, the results also varied. Apart from the 性发视频 logo, I was pleased to explore the extensive collection of fonts for text and elements available in the Luban library.



– Black PLA. PLA is one of the most popular materials in the 3D printing community, with dark grey and black filaments widely available. To my delight, a 2W IR laser produces highly precise and visually appealing engravings on this material. For testing, I printed four Flap Vent Blockers – a simple yet functional design that helps reduce drafts and, in turn, lowers energy bills during particularly cold and windy seasons. The Shape Library in Snapmaker Luban offers a selection of basic shapes for engraving and alignment. In addition to using custom text and shapes from the library, I incorporated the 性发视频 logo and even a previous picture I once used as an avatar. The results are truly astonishing.

This is a simple yet effective example of how 3D printing and laser engraving can complement each other seamlessly. With the Snapmaker Artisan, projects like this are completed effortlessly, as switching between disciplines takes only seconds. The clean, matte texture on the top and bottom of the prints highlights the machine’s precision and capabilities, showcasing its potential for high-quality results.

These coins are ideal for testing the capabilities of an IR laser module, as they showcase both detail and precision. – Settings. The designs on the coins turned out beautifully when 90% power and 90 mm/s speed were used as recommended. Because of the IR module’s 0.03 x 0.03 mm spot size, which ensures extremely fine engraving, the detail on these coins is truly remarkable. Even the shadows cast by some of the rocks looked amazing, bringing the dragon on the rocks to life.

We must not confuse the xTool F1 with the xTool F1 Ultra. While the previous version combined a 2W IR laser with a 10W diode laser, the xTool F1 Ultra features a 20W diode laser paired with a 20W fiber laser. The fiber laser effectively replaces the IR laser for most projects, delivering significantly more power and efficiency but at a much higher cost. Fiber lasers utilize doped optical fibers to generate efficient, precise beams, making them ideal for industrial applications like thin metal cutting and engraving. While all fiber lasers at 1064 nm fall under the infrared category, not all infrared lasers are fiber-based.

Setup and Design

The structural frame of the ACMER P2 laser engraving machine is made entirely of metal, enhancing stability and durability. The machine features a modular design and comes 95% pre-assembled, making installation quick and easy – just one minute. With only three simple steps, you can achieve full assembly:
1. As shown below, the laser module slides into the unit’s module housing, followed by connecting the integrated air line and power connections. Use the included cable tie for cable management.

2. Connect up air assist to the underside of the laser unit located below the on/off button, as seen below.

3. Connect up main power unit, and ensure all cables are clear of the engraving area.

– Laser Module. With its powerful 33W diode laser, the Acmer P2 can handle cutting projects such as plywood (up to 30mm), acrylic (25mm), and MDF (8mm). Over 200 materials have been tested on each machine, showcasing the laser’s extensive capabilities. The 33W model features a laser focal point of 0.08–0.1mm, with a quoted lifespan of approximately 8,000 hours of use. Users also have the option to swap out the laser module for lower-rated versions, such as the 10W or 20W models, and can further enhance functionality by adding the 2W IR laser module. As shown below, the module includes two spare lenses and computer connection accessories.

– Air assist unit. The ACMER P2 laser also features an air assist unit, as shown below, which comes standard with this unit and connects directly to the laser, eliminating the need for additional plugs. The air assist improves the quality of the cutting and engraving process, along with a honeycomb bed to allow for good airflow. However, the honeycomb bed is available for purchase at an additional cost.

– Supplied Materials for Testing. As shown below, ACMER has provided a diverse range of materials for testing before moving on to more advanced projects. My review will focus on these materials and their results.

– Safety Features. As shown above, the ACMER P2 is equipped with extensive safety features, including flame detection, an observable shield on the laser module, alarm lights and buzzers, a child safety lock, an emergency stop button, and a gyroscope tilt detector. However, it is strongly advised never to leave the laser unattended.

In my unboxing video above, I show how effortlessly this compact laser handles crafting projects while maintaining a focus on safety.


Software

Once the assembly is complete, the next step is to install the software. You can use Lightburn, Laser GRBL, or both, depending on your preference. The included TF card provides all the necessary files for setting up Laser GRBL and Lightburn, as well as Wi-Fi or wired connection options, cut patterns, and user guide files.

To streamline the setup, load the machine’s settings onto Lightburn using the supplied .lbn file. This made the setup process seamless and efficient.

Testing and Results

In this section, I will demonstrate the range of materials that the ACMER P2 33W laser can cut and engrave using the supplied materials, showcasing the results it can achieve. The machine also supports the addition of a rotary tool, which can be easily activated using a simple switch located at the rear of the unit, as shown below. However, since the rotary tool was not included, it will not be featured in this article.

Project 1 – 2mm Plywood Cutting and Engraving

Using the Lightburn test program, I 性发视频d a file to evaluate the cutting capabilities of the ACMER P2. The results, shown below, demonstrate the range of cuts achievable in a single pass. With the air assist turned on, the optimal settings were between 70% power at 800mm/min speed and 100% power at 1100mm/min speed. The test was successful, showing excellent results.

Project 2 – 7mm Plywood Cutting and Engraving

For this test, I added the ACMER name as a text file in Lightburn and used an engraving speed of 12,000mm/min. I then 性发视频d a border in Lightburn to cut at 250mm/min speed, and 100% power with the air assist turned on. The results, shown below, are flawless, with no scorching or missed cuts, highlighting the machine’s versatility in cutting power and speed.

Project 3 – Stainless Steel Engraving

For this test, I 性发视频d a laser test file in Lightburn, varying the power from 10% to 50% and the speeds from 600mm/min to 3000mm/min. The test took approximately 15 minutes to complete, and the results were impressive, demonstrating how power and speed variations produce different color schemes. This capability allows the laser to 性发视频 stunning images with a range of colors, which is something I plan to utilize in the future.

Project 4 – 3mm Black Acrylic Cutting

For this test, I 性发视频d a text file with ‘ACMER P2 33W’ and set the speed to 200mm/min at 100% power with one pass and the air assist turned on. The process took approximately 3 minutes to complete. Since this was black acrylic, there was no need to pre-cover the test piece, as is often required with clear acrylics. To prevent scorching, I left the protective paper covering on during cutting. As shown below, the results were once again successful, with no burns or missed cuts. I believe that with multiple passes, it could cut through anything up to 25mm thick.

Project 5 – Anodised Aluminum Engraving

For this test, I added the ACMER name and logo to Lightburn, setting the speed to 15,000mm/min at 100% power with 1 pass. I also adjusted the line interval to 0.0900mm to ensure a clean and precise image. The engraving took approximately 1.5 minutes to complete, and as shown below, the results were once again flawless, producing a clean and professional look. Some debris, often observed when engraving this type of material, required cleaning afterward.

Project 5 – Slate Stone Engraving

For my final test, I chose to use a slate coaster, which was not included in the materials pack. However, since slate is a commonly used material for engraving, I wanted to test the machine’s capabilities with it. I set the speed to 9200mm/min at 100% power, with the air assist turned on. The engraving took approximately 5 minutes to complete, and the results were once again outstanding.

Key settings to keep an eye on include material thickness – especially important when cutting-laser power, speed, and the number of passes.

Optional – Enclosure and Air Purifier

Two highly recommended optional items I haven’t had a chance to test are the Enclosure and Air Purifier. Both are essential when laser cutting is involved. Even a 6W laser can be dangerous if operated incorrectly. An enclosure helps 性发视频 a controlled and protected environment, while an air purifier manages excessive smoke.
