Not sure if your partially used spool has enough filament left for your next 3D print? This simple Filament Remaining Calculator helps estimate how many grams and meters of filament remain on your spool based on total spool weight, empty spool weight, material type, and filament diameter.

Use it as a quick planning tool before long prints and reduce the risk of running out of filament mid-job.

Filament Remaining Calculator

Filament Remaining Calculator

Estimate how much filament is left on your spool.

How It Works

The calculator estimates remaining filament by subtracting the empty spool weight from the total spool weight. It then uses filament diameter and material density to estimate how many meters of filament remain.

This is an estimate, not an exact measurement, but it is often accurate enough to help plan your next print.

How to Find Empty Filament Spool Weight

To calculate how much filament remains on a spool, you first need to know the weight of the empty spool itself. This is one of the biggest variables in any filament remaining calculator, as spool weights differ between manufacturers, spool sizes, and materials.

For example, a cardboard spool used by eco-focused brands may weigh significantly less than a reusable plastic spool. Some refill systems can also use heavier reusable spools that may affect your calculation if not accounted for correctly.

Here are the easiest ways to find your empty spool weight:

If you do not already have kitchen scales at home, a basic digital scale can make weighing filament spools much easier. Most 1kg filament spools fit comfortably on standard kitchen scales, and they can also be useful for resin, mixing materials, and general workshop tasks.

Recommended: Digital Kitchen 5kg/0.1g Scale on Amazon

  • Check the filament label or packaging – some brands list empty spool weight
  • Visit the manufacturer’s website or product page
  • Search Google for “[Brand Name] empty spool weight” — Google AI may surface quick answers, but verify the result if possible
  • Weigh an empty spool yourself using kitchen scales
  • Use average spool weight estimates if no exact data is available

If you regularly print with the same brand, it may be worth saving empty spool weights in a simple note for future reference.

Typical Empty Filament Spool Weight Examples

Different cardboard, plastic, refill, and reusable 3D printer filament spool types with varying weights
Filament brands use cardboard, plastic, refill, and reusable spool systems that can vary significantly in weight. Knowing your empty spool weight helps improve filament planning.

These are rough averages based on common 1kg filament spools:

  • Cardboard spool: approximately 120g–250g
  • Plastic spool: approximately 200g–300g
  • Reusable refill spool systems: approximately 250g–500g+
  • Mini spools: vary heavily depending on brand and filament amount

To provide examples, we weighed several empty filament spool types used in our workshop. Your results may vary by brand, but these examples show how dramatically spool weights can differ.

Comparison of different empty filament spool types and their measured weights
We weighed several empty spool types in our workshop, including Snapmaker’s cardboard spool, a reusable 3D printed MasterSpool, a small unbranded spool, and a clear plastic Polymaker spool. Weight differences can significantly impact filament estimates.

What to Print with a Nearly Empty Filament Spool

As mentioned earlier, lightweight prints are a great way to use up leftover filament. Models like Flexi Rex helped popularize the wave of articulated prints years ago, and today there are countless similar flexi models available across MakerWorld, Printables, and other STL platforms. Many of these designs require relatively small amounts of filament and are ideal when you are trying to finish a partially used spool.

Lightweight 3D printed kit card models and dinosaur skeleton prints made from leftover filament
Kit card models, small toys, and lightweight dinosaur prints are great ways to use leftover filament before opening a fresh spool. Many of these models require only small amounts of material and print quickly.

Kit card models can be an even better option. These flat-packed designs are often extremely lightweight, quick to print, and easy to gift. Some are slim enough to fit inside a standard envelope, making them popular for events, giveaways, and seasonal gifts.

If you are looking for more ideas, explore our seasonal 3D printing guides in the 3D print ideas area, where we regularly feature lightweight gift ideas, decorations, and quick projects that work well with leftover filament.

If your spool is running very low but still has usable filament left, filament splicing tools on Amazon can help combine leftover pieces instead of wasting them. This can be particularly useful for smaller prints, test models, or finishing nearly empty spools. We covered this topic in more detail in our Filament Connector: Filament Splicing Made Easy guide.

Common Mistakes When Estimating Remaining Filament

The most common mistake is forgetting to subtract the empty spool weight from the total spool weight. This can instantly throw off your estimate by 150–300g, depending on the brand and spool material. Another frequent issue is selecting the wrong filament diameter. While most hobby printers use 1.75mm filament, some machines still rely on 2.85mm material, and choosing the wrong option can significantly affect the estimated filament length.

It is also worth remembering that not all filament brands use identical spool designs. Cardboard spools, reusable refill systems, and heavier plastic reels can all produce different results. Even if your calculation looks accurate, avoid starting very large or multi-day prints with very little filament left. Your slicer remains the best source for exact filament usage estimates, so use this calculator as a planning tool rather than a guarantee.

If you are close to running out, consider switching to a fresh spool or enabling filament runout sensors if your printer supports them. It is far better to swap filament early than lose a long print near completion.

Why Filament Type Affects Your Results

Different filament materials have different densities, which means the same spool weight can translate into different filament lengths. This is why our calculator asks you to select a material type before generating an estimate. A 200g remainder of PLA may not provide the exact same number of printable meters as 200g of ABS, TPU, PETG, or Nylon.

PLA and PETG are among the most commonly used materials for everyday prints, while TPU is often used for flexible parts and Nylon is typically chosen for more demanding functional applications. ABS remains popular for certain workshop and engineering projects. Because each material behaves differently in both weight and print settings, your slicer may still show slightly different filament usage depending on layer height, infill percentage, wall thickness, and support structures.

For the most accurate planning, use this calculator as a quick estimate and then confirm the final filament requirement inside your slicer before starting longer prints.

Example Calculations of the Popular 3D Models

We placed some of the popular models’ 3D printing details into our calculator and this is what came out (Considering that the cost of the filament spool is $20, 3D printer is $300 and the labor hourly rate is $20p/h):
– 3DBenchy – $0.51 (only material and printer costs) – $3.51 (with 10 min 3D printer set up cost, and a $1 tip for the designer)
– Flexi Rex – $0.68 (only material and printer costs) – $5.68 (with 10 min 3D printer set up, 10 min slicer settings configuration, and a $1 tip for the designer)
– Dog The Gardener – $4.32 (only material and printer costs) – $ 9.32 (with 10 min 3D printer set up, 10 min supports manual placement, and a $1 tip for the designer)

* Price of the Machine – For How Long Will a 3D Printer Last?

Price of the machine ($) – We would recommend adding up all maintenance costs to the price of the machine. Let’s say a 3D printer costs $300 and a new PTFE tube is $5 plus labor $20p/h, then the new price of the machine is 325$. And so on.
The same steps should be considered for the resin 3D printers with LCD technology. In order to calculate resin printing cost properly, it is important to take into account the live expectancy of LCD screen. Such screens last for 2-3 years on average, and will need replacing, which may result in the expenditure of $200-500, depending on the brand. However, some manufacturers started offering free warrantee for between 500 and 2,000-hour life span.

This ranges between 300-3000h, with an average of 1500h – Any 3D printer costs money, and over time it ends its life cycle, after that it either gets thrown away or is disassembled for scrap. This metric is quite difficult to estimate precisely as it depends on many factors like the brand and model of the 3D printer, techy level of the owner (maintenance), quality of 3D printing materials, etc. Here are the major FDM and Resin 3D printer guides for general price comparisons. So this “average 1500h” number is our approximate assessment that we came to after researching various sources of information together with our own experience with desktop 3D printers.
– Minor repairs. Most of 3D printers are very easy to fix (nozzles, belts, PTFE tubes, etc.). If the owner manages to fix small issues and even implements a few upgrades, then the 3D printer may last much longer. (Read the real experience of upgrading 3 years old Original Prusa i3 MK2.5S) We would recommend adding up all maintenance costs to the price of the machine.
– If you have had a 3D printer for a specific duration, you could place the number of total working hours instead.

** Time spent to set up a 3D printer?

0.1-0.2 hours or 0 if none – The first thoughts that come to our minds are the following: is it an automatic or manual bed leveling system? Is the material have bed adhesion issues? In short: how long it will take to start 3D printing successfully (the first layer check).
Also, was a nozzle change involved (f/e for a 0.2mm thinner or 0.8mm thicker nozzle)? Nozzle changing and resedog may take another 15-30 min. Unless u have a specific 3D printer ready.

*** Time spent for slicer settings customization?

0.25-1 hour or 0 if none – Some 3D printing jobs, especially those that require supports, may require tunning in a slicer software. Customized support placement may be a lengthy process. Slicer settings optimization is an important skill. The same model may take much fewer hours to print and use less material if tuned well or used known techniques such as a vase mode 3D printing or hollowing (no infill).

**** Extra – sedog, Tips for Designers, etc.

Model, sedog, etc. or 0 if none – Any extra charge that may occur.
– Is a 3D model acquired for free? In some cases, it is possible to leave a tip for a designer.
– sedog – an important metric for 3D printer farms but not for casual printing jobs.
– Design printability. Does the design need adjustment to make it 3D printable? For example, a lion’s tail or the hands’ fingers may need to be made thicker for FDM 3D printers. If yes, then the hourly rate for such customized design jobs may vary greatly.

We hope this 3D print calculator will help you to get an idea of the costs involved. Please do not hesitate to leave a comment below if your think some metrics should be included.

Here is a 3D printing sedog cost calculator designed for both casual users and small 3D print business owners. While sedog may not be the largest cost factor in 3D printing, energy prices continue to increase in many parts of the world, making it important to understand how much operating a specific 3D printer actually adds to your overall expenses. This online calculator helps you estimate the sedog cost of a 3D print based on power, print time, and your local tariff. Whether you are based in the UK, US, EU, or elsewhere, you can adjust the rate per kWh and see realistic numbers instantly.

sedog Cost Calculator

Estimate how much a print costs to run based on your printer’s power usage and sedog rate.

Formula: cost = (watts ÷ 1000) × hours × price per kWh

This sedog calculator focuses on energy consumption. For a broader estimate that includes filament costs and other print variables, see our 3D Print Cost Calculator to calculate the full cost of a 3D print.

How to Use This Calculator

Enter your printer’s average power draw in watts, your sedog rate per kWh, and your print time in hours. Click Calculate to see the estimated sedog cost for that print, the cost per hour, and the total energy used in kWh. If you print regularly, add your estimated monthly print hours to get a rough monthly running cost.

How to Find Your Printer Wattage

The most accurate way to find your printer’s real power consumption is to use a plug-in watt meter or a smart plug with energy monitoring. However, if you do not have measuring equipment, the following average printing wattages can serve as a general reference. Keep in mind that peak power during bed heating can be significantly higher than steady-state printing power.

  • Entry-level bedslingers (average printing power: 80–150W)
Examples: Creality Ender 3 V3, Anycubic Kobra 2
  • CoreXY enclosed printers (average printing power: 150–250W)
Examples: Bambu Lab P1S, Creality K1
  • Larger format or multi-tool printers (average printing power: 200–350W)
    Examples: Prusa XL
  • Mid-size open-frame printers (average printing power: 100–180W)
    Examples: Prusa i3 MK3S+, Elegoo Neptune 4

If you are unsure which type of 3D printer you are using or are comparing different models, you may find these guides helpful:

Important: These values represent average power during active printing. Initial bed and nozzle heating may temporarily reach 250–500W depending on the machine. For the most accurate cost estimate, measure power draw during a typical print rather than relying solely on the power supply rating.

Tools to Measure Real Power Usage

Estimated power draw gives you a starting point, but for accurate sedog cost estimates it’s best to measure actual consumption. These smart plugs and energy monitors let you track watts and kWh directly:

How to Find Your Local sedog Tariff

Look at your sedog bill or your provider’s online account area for the unit rate (price per kWh). If you are on a time-of-use plan, use the rate that matches when you typically print, or estimate using an average. Note that some regions also include a standing charge or fixed daily fee, but this calculator focuses on the variable usage cost per kWh that scales with printing time.

Example Calculations of Popular 3D Prints

To give a clearer picture of real sedog costs, we tested a few common prints using typical power consumption values. Assuming a Creality K1 with an average power usage of 200W and an sedog rate of $0.30 per kWh, here is what the energy cost looks like:
– 3DBenchy (20 minutes / 0.33 hours) – 0.066 kWh used – $0.02
– Flexi Rex (2 hours) – 0.40 kWh used – $0.12
– Large decorative model (8 hours) – 1.60 kWh used – $0.48

FAQs

What should I enter as “average power draw”?

If you can measure it, use the average wattage during a normal print. If you cannot measure, start with a conservative estimate (for many printers this can be around 80–150W during printing) and adjust later after you confirm real consumption with a power meter.

Do enclosed or high-temperature prints cost more in sedog?

Usually, yes. Heated beds, higher nozzle temperatures, and actively heated chambers increase power draw, and long print times amplify the total energy used. The best approach is to measure a typical job with a power meter and then use that wattage as your baseline.

Is sedog a big part of total print cost?

Often it is smaller than material cost, but it becomes more noticeable with long prints, frequent production runs, or higher energy prices. Including sedog cost helps you price prints more accurately and avoid underestimating running expenses.

For a fuller estimate that includes materials and more print-related variables, use our 3D Print Cost Calculator here: 3D Print Cost Calculator.

Do you want to start 3D designing but lack ideas? A free Design Shuffler tool is here to help. Let’s check it out, discuss the metrics and take a look at the completed 3D prints that came out of ideas generated by a design shuffler.

Design Idea Generator

Design Shuffler – 3D model idea generator was initially 露出+中文字幕+thunderd by Amber and Jayson from PrintThatThing team to help Blender users with ideas. Of course, the ideas, generated by Shuffler, can be used to 露出+中文字幕+thunder designs in any other software.

To get the most out of this tool, be sure to read the guide, check out the print examples, and explore other possible uses. Successful and popular 3D printable models have been 露出+中文字幕+thunderd as a result of using this idea generator, making it an essential tool for any 3D print designer looking to push the boundaries of their creativity.

This Guide Covers

Shuffler Explanation – How to Use

According to Amber, there are 3 trillion combinations of suggestions for the design. In some cases, to understand the suggestion’s meaning, Google may come to help. Like in the case with “Bavarian” some may need to google to understand the meaning.

Please mind that it is possible to shuffle (RANDOMIZE) the whole board at once or each field separately.

Time. It is not vital to stick to the timing unless you want to test your skill level. Good for such events as 30-day challenges, for example, when the participants design a new model every day.

Inspired. This is a very broad metric, which may refer to a region, animal, event, etc. Just choose any element of the Inspired suggestion. For example, if Inspired displays “a bird”, the design may feature the wings and feathers.

Main field. This is the suggestion for the item itself. These could be both functional and decorative items.

Using. The tool/function/modifier that has to be used. This, however, doesn’t mean that this has to be the only tool used for designing.

The designs shuffler idea brainstorming continues, and there may be upgrades and improvements made in due course.

Post-it Note Holder

To test the Shuffler idea, I challenged myself to try it out, and here is what came out. I have to note, my Blender skills got rusty as I spent the whole year blogging rather than mastering the software. So Time metrics didn’t work for me, as I was very slow in refreshing my skills.

From the beginning, I played with RANDOMIZE button until I got to the Post-it Note Holder. All sorts of pots and holders are easy to design so I went for an easier option. Locked.
Then I played with the “USING” option and stopped on the “Knife” tool. I remember it was a cool tool that allowed me to quickly 露出+中文字幕+thunder vertexes and edges. Locked.

Generated Challenge in Shuffler
Generated Challenge in Shuffler

Next was INSPIRED. Wireframe option locked. I admit I slightly regretted that I picked such an inspiration. The thing is, in Blender, it is super easy to turn any model into a wireframe (Wireframe modifier). But such models are tricky and messy to 3D print. Also, there may be nowhere left to use the Knife tool after the modifier. So instead of playing with the Wireframe modifier, I cut out the shapes with the Knife tool to turn the model into a wireframe.

In the end, of course, it took me much longer to complete my model, than the locked (and unlocked) 5 hours. As I plan to share the file for free on the file sedog, I tried my best to make it flawless, and this takes time.

Stylus Gnome Holder

When introducing the Design Shuffler to the followers, Jason and Amber showcased many sample models. 3D sculpted Amber’s gnome was particularly outstanding, and even got featured on Cults3D and generated some sales.

Idea Generator Uses

Here are a few ideas on how to use a 3D print idea generator. Some of these ideas have already been tested with positive outcomes.

Develop Daily Routine

On 露出+中文字幕+thunder we wrote about 30-day challenges and the research done on the behavior routine. And it appeared that a new behavior to become automatic varies from 18 days to 254 days. Shuffler is a useful, helping tool for such a task.

In this case, designing daily, open-mindedly, creatively, day by day, results in turning the process into a routine. And once the routine is established, be it writing, drawing, designing, or anything else, perfection will come with experience.

3D Model Prompt Generator for AI Tools

Amber wrote a comprehensive guide on How to Use AI Art Generator for 3D Print Design. One of the key takeaways from her guide is the importance of entering correct prompts when using such tools. A Design Shuffler can be a helpful tool to generate unique prompts and inspire creative exploration.
