Printer and Drying Equipment Requirements

Before we proceed to the engineering-grade materials, it’s important to highlight that in most cases, specific 3D printer capabilities and proper filament drying are essential for successful prints. These requirements will be mentioned again for each filament type individually, but here are the most critical hardware considerations:

  • Enclosure: A fully enclosed printer is often necessary to prevent warping. A heated chamber is ideal for materials like PC or Nylon, CF.

While testing engineering-grade materials, one of our functional prints — a 3D printed roof window handle extension — failed after 1–2 years of daily use. It was originally made from PLA and couldn’t withstand the constant stress from frequently opening roof windows. Since I had a spool of Inslogic PC-ABS on hand (in white), I decided to reprint the part using that. After a few tuning attempts to get the bed adhesion right, the result was solid and functional.

To test PA6-CF, I chose to print components for a DeathRacer RC model. A hardened or ruby-tipped nozzle is essential due to the abrasive nature of carbon fiber. The Creality K2 Plus, with its enclosed chamber and hardened steel nozzle, handled this job with ease.

PA6-CF is a lovely material to work with when your project demands both strength and aesthetics. For the best results, be sure to check the Inslogic PA6-CF product page for detailed printing and optional annealing settings. These can help fine-tune the part’s mechanical properties even further.

One important consideration with PA6-CF is safe handling: during sanding or prolonged exposure to airborne dust, carbon fiber particles may pose respiratory irritation risks. It’s best to work in a well-ventilated area and use appropriate protection such as a dust mask or respirator when post-processing.

We’ve begun testing PA12-CF and will be sharing full results shortly. While visually similar to PA6-CF, PA12-CF tends to offer improved dimensional stability and better moisture resistance, making it easier to work with in environments without ideal filament drying setups. This material is especially promising for prints that need long-term accuracy without warping.

Typical use cases for PA12-CF include drone frames, lightweight mechanical housings, automotive clips and fixtures exposed to moderate heat, functional enclosures requiring dimensional stability, wear-resistant jigs and brackets, tooling components, mountings for electronics, durable hinges and latches, and industrial prototypes designed to withstand humid or variable environments. Its combination of stiffness, low moisture absorption, and ease of printing makes PA12-CF suitable for a wide range of functional and semi-structural applications where reliability and consistency matter.

Another engineering-grade material tested on the Creality K2 Pro is PA12-CF by Inslogic. It looks nice, and the finish resembles popular galaxy composite filaments. With the default 0.4 mm nozzle, this vase is understandably very fragile.

We’ve recently received a spool of Nylon PA6/66 from Inslogic and will be sharing full testing results soon. This copolymer blend offers a balance between the strength and rigidity of PA6 and the flexibility and improved processability of PA66, making it a versatile engineering-grade material. While it shares some characteristics with carbon fiber-reinforced nylons, PA6/66 typically provides slightly more ductility and can be easier to print under less abrasive conditions.

Typical use cases for Nylon PA6/66 include impact-resistant mechanical parts, snap-fit enclosures, gears and bushings, brackets, fixtures, cable guides, tool holders, and functional prototypes that require both durability and a degree of flexibility. Its balance of mechanical strength and chemical resistance makes it suitable for engineering environments, workshop tools, and end-use components subject to stress and minor deformation. When properly dried and printed with the right hardware setup, PA6/66 can offer excellent performance in both indoor and semi-industrial applications.

Engineering-grade filaments require more attention than standard materials like PLA or PETG. Assembly and Setup

The EIBOS Series X Tetras is designed for a straightforward upgrade of the Bambu Lab AMS. With clearly labeled parts and step-by-step visuals in the manual, the entire process is beginner-friendly and tool-light.

Overview and Prep

After unboxing, begin by reviewing the layout diagrams provided in the product manual (front and rear views). Carefully handle components and lay them out for quick access.

Core Installation (AMS Integration)

1) Remove the AMS lid: Unscrew the 4 rear screws securing the AMS v1 top cover.

2) Attach the Tetras upper cover: Align it with the AMS and secure using the original screws.

3) Install support frames: Turn the AMS upside down (use included foam) and attach the 4 support frames to the base using M3 H8 screws. Ensure channels face outward.

Cabling and Module Assembly

4) Connect USB-C cables: Plug in the labeled cables — power module to rear, screen module to front, and heating station leads routed through the outer channels.

5) Attach modules: Secure the power module to the rear and the screen module to the front brackets using M3 H10 screws. Confirm no cables are pinched and all connections are firm.

6) Final connections: Complete all USB-C wiring: screens to front, power to rear, and long leads to heating stations.

7) Attach rubber feet: Place 4 on the front and 4 on the rear module brackets.

8) Assemble front baffle set: Clip the acrylic parts in this sequence: A (left), B, B (center), C (right).

9) Insert assembled baffles: Fit into their corresponding slots as per diagram.

10) Install middle baffles: Use the acrylic fixings to insert in the order: B, A, B.

11) Secure rear baffles: These lock in the acrylic housing. Fit them gently — do not force.

12) Apply gasket: Add the silicone strip between the upper and lower housing to complete the chamber seal.

Operating the Dryer

– Screen Layout / Settings
The display screen is much like previous Eibos dryer models and is easy to use with the simple layout.

Before powering on, it’s worth checking the voltage label on the back of the unit to ensure it matches your region’s standard safety requirements.

Once connected, a single press of the power button brings the dryer online. You can toggle between drying-only and humidity-controlled modes depending on your needs. There’s also a factory reset option, but I never had to use it.

Filament types, such as PLA, ABS, PETG, and TPU, can be selected via the Option button. Each preset automatically loads the ideal drying parameters, but you can override them if necessary. I liked that the system remembers custom material profiles (M1 and M2), which is useful if you frequently switch between brands or experimental filaments.

Using the Setting button, you can cycle through key parameters:
Drying temperature (20°C – 65°C)
Drying time (30 minutes – 24 hours)
Power level (Low / Medium / High)
An optional humidity threshold if you’re using it in “smart” mode

One handy feature is the Second-Stage Drying Mode. I didn’t use it every time, but when drying filaments that had been sitting unsealed for weeks, it came in useful. It’s activated through the dedicated button and offers the same level of control as the primary cycle.

For me, the screens were responsive and easy to understand. The segmented layout clearly displays set temperature, live temp, humidity, and time remaining — all at a glance.

During the drying function, the sealing cover will automatically open and remain in an open Position. Once drying is complete, the cover automatically closes and maintains the sealing condition of the chamber. In the event of a sudden power loss or external interference that causes the cover to fall or remain open, you can manually adjust it.


In use Operation

Once the assembly was complete, I mounted the Tetras unit on top of my Bambu Lab X1C, in its usual position. What stood out immediately was how seamlessly it fit in: the overall look and functionality of the setup remained unchanged. I connected the familiar PTFE tube and cables, with the only notable difference being the need for a second power socket. The model I chose was the Happy Sitting Pot Horns Hand by TomoDesigns on MakerWorld. It was printed at 0.2 mm layer height using two color variants. Despite the filament’s exposure to ambient air, the result came out clean and consistent, showing that the drying system really makes a difference.

I printed the Rock People models by Blob Lab, found on Patreon, using multi-color filament. Each one was printed individually due to the nature of the design, and I ended up completing over a dozen of them. – Airtight. Compared to SUNLU’s other filament dryers, the S2 and FilaDryer S4, the SP2 stands out for being airtight. The top lid closes very securely, and the bottom plugs are lined with rubber around the perimeter to ensure a tight seal.

– Temperature. As promised, it maintains 70°C at the maximum setting. As shown on my infrared camera, the heating element itself reaches around 80°C, while the spools heat up to approximately 70°C. This temperature is sufficient for drying popular materials like PLA and is suitable for storing engineering-grade filaments such as PA (Nylon) and CF (Carbon Fiber blends). This setup worked very well. Humidity remained at 20% even after a few days, when I printed the second side panel. I didn’t need to dismantle the heating base and assemble the bottom plug panels for that lengthy pause. Despite the dryer being positioned some distance away from the printer, there was no noticeable resistance that interfered with printing.

To ensure that no electronics were damaged, I removed the bottom lid to inspect the device. Given that this is a high-temperature device with sensitive electronics, it’s always better to be cautious. To my relief, the area where the legs were pushed in contained no electronics. If the impact had occurred on the electronics side, there could have been potential rubbing against the wires.

According to the manufacturer, placing a desiccant dehumidifier in the designated area allows it to function as a storage dry box. – Touchscreen. The E2 touchscreen may not match the quality of those on newer generation 3D printers. But, it still allows for easy navigation through functions and complements the overall design of the FilaDryer series. All presets and settings were straightforward to adjust using the [SET] button along with the up and down buttons.

– RH 10%. The only aspect I couldn’t understand and wished was more precise is the humidity reader, which was always at RH 10%. However, the SUNLU site provided an explanation: If the product set working temperature ≥ 80 ℃, humidity detection module will be in a protective state (display humidity RH 10%) is a normal phenomenon when the drying box temperature is reduced to 70 ℃, about 20H, humidity detection module automatically restore the original precision.

– Instructions. The included operation instructions are quite handy. I got a quick sneak peek at the annealing mode settings directly from them. They also include helpful tips, such as: ‘For optimal drying, keep the silicone plug open during drying.’

– Safety. Safety is paramount with this 500W heating device, as high temperatures can rise quickly. According to the manufacturer, an alarm will sound, and heating will stop if temperatures become abnormally high. In my own tests outside the enclosure, temperature readings stayed within acceptable ranges. Needless to say, the device is made from fire-resistant materials. While I can’t offer a comprehensive assessment yet, after several hours of use, external temperatures remained within normal limits. See the thermal footage below.


Drying Mode

In our previous guides, we thoroughly explained the importance of keeping filaments dry and using filament dryers. To put it briefly, it’s essential for improving the quality of 3D prints.

One of the main features of the SUNLU FilaDryer E2 is its high-speed heating and higher drying temperature limits. By pressing [SET], you can cycle through the preset filament drying modes, such as PA(Nylon), CF(Carbon Fiber), ABS, and others.

As a quick test, I started a print on the Creality K1 using SUNLU’s Easy PA(Nylon) filament. While the model I chose wasn’t intended for engineering purposes, it produced an interesting result.

I was pleased to see the Creality K1 pull the filament smoothly without extra PTFE tubes despite entering the 3D printer at nearly a horizontal angle.

While the PA(Nylon) setting heated the chamber to 100°C (212°F), readings from an infrared thermometer revealed temperature variations across different areas, as hot air flowed in a counterclockwise loop from right to left.

The functional, themed sticky note holder printed very well in Easy-PA (Nylon) with a nozzle temperature of 270°C and a heated bed at 80°C. However, upon cooling, the thin wall in the holder area bent quickly. The print would have failed if it hadn’t been placed in the chamber for post-processing in annealing mode. See images below.


Annealing Mode

Annealing in 3D printing means heating a printed part below its melting point to relieve stress, improve stability, and enhance its properties.

I had a great example of a model that printed well in regular and exotic PLAs but showed an interesting bend in the holding area when printed in Easy-PA. I must admit I hadn’t used this material before, so there might be specific cooling settings to avoid this issue. Nevertheless, it was perfect for my task. I tested E2 annealing mode right on this model to see if it could fix the problem.

Annealing mode presets on the E2 range between 2 to 6 hours and temperatures of 80°C (176°F) to 100°C (212°F). In my case, I left my print in the chamber for about 10 minutes, during which it became soft and flexible. I could then carefully ‘massage’ the bent area back into its designed position, significantly improving the bend.

Physically manipulating different types of plastics is possible with a heat gun, but the results are often uneven. One side of the printed part might even get damaged before the other side has fully warmed up. In contrast, an annealing chamber ensures the entire model is heated evenly.

As a fun test, I placed a Benchy printed in white PLA into the chamber, and within about ten minutes, it became soft enough to squeeze with just two fingers. Poor Benchys – I have a feeling many more will become test “victims” of this device!


Importance of the Teflon Tubes and Setups

As instructions suggest, the Teflon tubes should be installed, especially if there is a sharp filament travel curve.

In my previous FilaDryer S4 review, I tested various setups with different printers and positions. However, the PTFE tubes provided with the E2 are quite short. I would recommend that SUNLU include longer PTFE tubes or offer custom-length options as an add-on for a more sustainable solution. For reference, here’s an example of the FilaDryer S4 setup on the Snapmaker Artisan.

The two PTFE tubes feeding filament to the Snapmaker dual extruder are over a meter long. When using such long tubes, it is important to use high-quality filaments with consistent diameters. Additionally, it’s a good practice to check for excessive filament feeding resistance. My XYZ Cube test print was completed without issues, as shown in a short YouTube video.

I like this setup and would love to have custom brackets to hold the S4 on top of the Artisan enclosure. Placing the E2 on the enclosure feels excessive and would complicate the use of the annealing mode.

As my SUNLU FilaDryer E2 testing continues, I’ve geared up with some very interesting engineering-grade filaments from SUNLU, including Easy-PA, PC-ABS, PA6-CF, and PA12-CF. To evaluate this filament, I chose to print large and challenging models. When using rainbow filaments, achieving the desired colour transition greatly depends on the model’s size. I printed three models in varying sizes. As you can observe, smaller objects show minimal colour transition, whereas larger objects display the full spectrum of the transition more prominently.

The Moon City model by Kijai Designs turned out exceptionally well with this filament. The filament’s qualities perfectly complement the striking design of the model. The model looks stunning in silk PLA, and I believe it would also look equally impressive in matte PLA. This particular print was made on the Creality K1 Max.

Next, I printed a Voronoi Skull by Joker3D on MakerWorld, which also turned out great. Printing in Voronoi style is challenging for both the filament and the printer due to the complex design. Printing models in this style involve numerous retractions, extensive bridging, and precise cooling, all of which challenge the capabilities of desktop 3D printers.

The last object I printed with this filament is the ‘Print in Place Helicopter Toy’ by Triple G Workshop, available on Printables. As I mentioned before, the colour transition is not noticeable due to the model’s small size. This is an interesting model that is printed upside down. The model came out very well, without stringing or other issues, on the Creality K1 Max.

As you can see, the T-Rex Skull by STLFlix features color-rich transitions. Thanks to the design and printing requirements, the area where the skull connects has the same, light blue matte color shade. The popular flexible articulated Pokémon Charizard model by IXPatch is another challenging model that both the filament and 3D printer handle well. After testing and reviewing filament dryers and dry boxes over the years, we are compiling a detailed guide in this category. The expectation that such inexpensive devices may significantly improve filament and 3D print quality is thrilling. Is it a MUST-have device for my 3D printers or not? Why are Filament Dryers Needed?

Until now, we used to keep all filaments in sealed plastic bags with a piece of a desiccant dehumidifier and were generally happy about it. Of course, in a few years, filament quality in some spools became degraded due to general mishandling. Plastic bags either didn’t get sealed properly, were micro-pierced by a sharp filament end, or the silica gel stopped working, and we had no idea about it.

In extreme cases, our filament made a popping noise during extrusion, and some visible evaporation occurred. This is the source of uneven surfaces on the prints. When the water is heated, it boils and evaporates, leaving micro craters on the extruded filament and printed surfaces.

The opportunity to reverse the process and get the quality of the material back is very welcoming. This is where filament dryers may come to the rescue.

Moisture Absorption – Hygroscopicity

In our previous article, “How to Revert Filament Moisture Absorption,” Curry Lin explained how it works in detail. He even featured a chart showcasing how some filaments are more hygroscopic than others.

The settings are easy to see and use. With a maximum temperature that can be increased up to 70°C, the S2 can now dry a wider range of materials, such as PLA, ABS, Nylon, and more.

This build enables the filament to be fed to our Creality 3D printers. For the Ender 3 V2 Neo, the filament feed is straightforward and even safer than using the original spool holder on the top. It eliminates the risk of brittle filament snapping. The Ender 5 S1 also works well with this setup, even though its filament feeding mechanism is slightly unusual. 360° Heating: The heating element now wraps around the spool much more evenly, unlike the previous version, which covered only around half of the spool area. As the SUNLU S2 is designed as an active heated filament dryer rather than an airtight dry storage box, it does not include a dedicated desiccant compartment. This keeps the setup simple, with no desiccant bags to monitor or replace. However, for longer-term storage after drying, an airtight storage box with dessicant bags or vacuum-sealed storage bags is still recommended.

Eryone M2

Eryone M1 has a slim, snail-like design that has surprisingly many functions. It combines drying with the help of desiccant dehumidifiers and a heating option.

It was delivered in a box slightly bigger than a 1kg filament spool. It is designed to hold the standard 750g-1000g spools, but when I tested a smaller spool, it also worked. The smooth metal base surface and relatively light weight of the spool allowed it to roll in the box.

It took us about one day to decrease humidity from 46% to 24%. We had to switch the heating function back on several times because it stays on for four hours. The Bowden extruder-setup 3D printer, like Neptune 3, worked well.

Filament dryers with such a compact design could be the best solution for those with a limited budget and space.


DIY Solutions and Innovations

Even though many 3D printing-related brands launched filament drying products, many DIY solutions and tutorials are available online. These may look less appealing, but they are sometimes as effective as the commercial versions. Also, cost-wise, these are much cheaper to build, and volume-wise, they are more productive.


– IKEA Storage Box. Following one of the first results in a Google search, we found a video on how to turn an IKEA storage box into an effective dry box. Generally, many storage boxes and food containers that can be turned into dry boxes can be found online.


– High-Temperature and Annealing. High-temperature filament dryers enable the maintenance of advanced engineering-grade materials like PA-Nylon, PC-ABS, ASA, and CF-Carbon Fiber blends. The annealing post-processing feature allowing users to experiment and post-process filaments and prints in a controlled environment.
