To demonstrate the impact, I printed two identical Benchies using the same gcode. The first print was done straight from the spool without drying. The second was printed after drying the filament for six hours in the Jayo J1, then storing it in the sealed chamber to reduce reabsorption.

Following the six-hour drying cycle, the humidity reading dropped significantly, and the print quality improved with fewer visible artefacts, smoother surfaces, and more consistent extrusion.

I was fortunate enough to review three Elegoo Saturns in a row, and if Saturn 2 and Saturn 3 didn’t have a lot of difference between them apart from higher resolution, then Saturn 4 differs in many ways. Now, Saturn 4 received an automatic leveling, a different printing bed and attachment system, and a user-friendly protective cover design. And these are still basic features for the basic version to maintain a very competitive price.

The Elegoo Saturn Ultra 16K has been exceptional to test and use for printing. The machine’s construction is top-notch, retaining the flip-lid design of the 12k Ultra while boosting the resolution to 16K. A major upgrade is the heated resin VAT. During tests, local outside temperatures plunged below zero. In an unheated workshop, such conditions would typically halt printing. However, the heated VAT performed exceptionally, maintaining a steady temperature of about 25°C. It utilizes the build plate to agitate the resin, moving up and down to distribute heat evenly.

The original SLA machines have been primarily used for prototyping. The main purpose of such machines is to help designers to test and feel the future product in a prototype mode. Nowadays prototyping is widely used in the automotive industry, medicine, for surgery planning, architecture, and other areas. SLA, LCD, and DLP resin 3D printers are gaining ground in dentistry, audiology, and jewelry.
From the hobbyist perspective, this technology is invaluable for creating complex figurines and miniatures that can be used in tabletop gaming. With the ability to print in great detail, designers can let their imagination run free.

What to Consider

With all the benefits that this technology brings, it may be tempting to try it out at home. There are a few aspects to consider.
– Health and Safety. Dealing with resins may be a messy job, and as this material is hazardous, strict safety measures have to be put in place. Wearing gloves and protective goggles is one. Designating the work area which is well ventilated and out of children’s reach is another.
– Post-processing. Prints made in resin require washing and curing, and this leads to buying an extra item – a Wash & Cure machine.

When strength, durability, and thermal resistance matter, standard PLA and PETG just won’t cut it. That’s where engineering-grade filaments come in. These advanced materials — including Nylon, Polycarbonate (PC), and carbon-fiber-infused blends — are designed for real-world functional applications, from automotive parts to industrial prototypes.

In this guide, we’ll explore the most common types of engineering-grade filaments, what sets them apart, and how to print them successfully on compatible FDM 3D printers. Whether you’re working with carbon-fiber-filled Nylon or heat-resistant PC-ABS, understanding the properties and requirements of each material is key to getting professional-grade results.

Printer and Drying Equipment Requirements

Before we proceed to the engineering-grade materials, it’s important to highlight that in most cases, specific 3D printer capabilities and proper filament drying are essential for successful prints. These requirements will be mentioned again for each filament type individually, but here are the most critical hardware considerations:

  • Enclosure: A fully enclosed printer is often necessary to prevent warping. A heated chamber is ideal for materials like PC or Nylon, CF.
  • Heated Bed: The bed should reach temperatures up to 110°C for proper adhesion with some of the engineering filaments.
  • Reinforced Nozzle: Materials like carbon-fiber-reinforced Nylon are extremely abrasive. Hardened steel, ruby-tipped, or nozzles made from tungsten carbide are recommended to avoid rapid wear.

Printer examples that meet these requirements include the Creality K2 Plus and the QIDI Plus4, both of which feature enclosed chambers and all-metal hotends.

Another essential piece of hardware is a filament dryer. Engineering materials are highly hygroscopic and absorb moisture quickly, which can ruin print quality. For best results, use a dryer capable of maintaining elevated temperatures over long periods. High-performance options like the SUNLU E2 are well-suited for Nylon and PC filaments that require higher drying temperatures.

This guide is intended to remain evergreen and will be updated regularly as we test new materials and use cases on this website. So far, we’ve worked with several engineering-grade filaments, including PA6-CF (carbon fiber-reinforced Nylon PA6), PA12-CF (carbon fiber-reinforced Nylon PA12), PC-ABS in white (a blend offering strength and heat resistance), and Nylon PA6/66 (a durable copolymer blend). Each of these materials offers unique properties suited for demanding applications, and more will be added as we continue hands-on testing.

Use Case Examples & Tips:
While testing engineering-grade materials, one of our functional prints — a 3D printed roof window handle extension — failed after 1–2 years of daily use. It was originally made from PLA and couldn’t withstand the constant stress from frequently opening roof windows. Since I had a spool of Inslogic PC-ABS on hand (in white), I decided to reprint the part using that. After a few tuning attempts to get the bed adhesion right, the result was solid and functional.

Use Case Examples & Tips:
To test PA6-CF, I chose to print components for a DeathRacer RC model. After seeing all the fun DeathRacer 宇都宫紫苑ed2k organized by @TheRealSamPrentice at various RepRap festivals, I couldn’t resist joining in. While the official instructions suggest that these models can be built in PLA, using PA6-CF might be a bit overkill — but it served my testing purposes perfectly. The distinctive matte finish and textured feel of PA6-CF give the parts a seriously cool and professional look.

For best results, use a 260–280°C nozzle temperature, 90–110°C heated bed, and keep the filament dry during the entire print. A hardened or ruby-tipped nozzle is essential due to the abrasive nature of carbon fiber. The Creality K2 Plus, with its enclosed chamber and hardened steel nozzle, handled this job with ease.

PA6-CF is a lovely material to work with when your project demands both strength and aesthetics. For the best results, be sure to check the Inslogic PA6-CF product page for detailed printing and optional annealing settings. These can help fine-tune the part’s mechanical properties even further.

One important consideration with PA6-CF is safe handling: during sanding or prolonged exposure to airborne dust, carbon fiber particles may pose respiratory irritation risks. It’s best to work in a well-ventilated area and use appropriate protection such as a dust mask or respirator when post-processing.


Difference Between PA6-CF and PA12-CF

Before moving on to PA12-CF, it’s worth highlighting the key differences between these two materials. At first, I found it a bit confusing — the names are nearly identical, and even when printed, the parts texture looked quite similar. However, as you’ll see in the table below, there are some important differences in performance, handling, and moisture sensitivity that can affect your print success depending on the application.

Use Case Examples & Tips:
We’ve begun testing PA12-CF and will be sharing full results shortly. While visually similar to PA6-CF, PA12-CF tends to offer improved dimensional stability and better moisture resistance, making it easier to work with in environments without ideal filament drying setups. This material is especially promising for prints that need long-term accuracy without warping.

Typical use cases for PA12-CF include drone frames, lightweight mechanical housings, automotive clips and fixtures exposed to moderate heat, functional enclosures requiring dimensional stability, wear-resistant jigs and brackets, tooling components, mountings for electronics, durable hinges and latches, and industrial prototypes designed to withstand humid or variable environments. Its combination of stiffness, low moisture absorption, and ease of printing makes PA12-CF suitable for a wide range of functional and semi-structural applications where reliability and consistency matter.

Another engineering-grade material tested on the Creality K2 Pro is PA12-CF by Inslogic. It looks nice, and the finish resembles popular galaxy composite filaments. With the default 0.4 mm nozzle, this vase is understandably very fragile.

There is a big collection of anti-sphere vases available on Printables. Marcidi shared this collection on our forum. This is the default size. For functionality, such as a rubbish bin or a vase for dry flowers, I would print it bigger and with a larger nozzle.


Nylon PA6/66

We’ve recently received a spool of Nylon PA6/66 from Inslogic and will be sharing full testing results soon. This copolymer blend offers a balance between the strength and rigidity of PA6 and the flexibility and improved processability of PA66, making it a versatile engineering-grade material. While it shares some characteristics with carbon fiber-reinforced nylons, PA6/66 typically provides slightly more ductility and can be easier to print under less abrasive conditions.

Typical use cases for Nylon PA6/66 include impact-resistant mechanical parts, snap-fit enclosures, gears and bushings, brackets, fixtures, cable guides, tool holders, and functional prototypes that require both durability and a degree of flexibility. Its balance of mechanical strength and chemical resistance makes it suitable for engineering environments, workshop tools, and end-use components subject to stress and minor deformation. When properly dried and printed with the right hardware setup, PA6/66 can offer excellent performance in both indoor and semi-industrial applications.

Challenges and Safety

Engineering-grade filaments require more attention than standard materials like PLA or PETG. Proper filament drying is especially important — materials such as Nylon and PC-ABS are highly hygroscopic and can absorb moisture quickly, leading to stringing, poor layer adhesion, and weak prints. Using a reliable filament dryer and storing spools in a sealed, low-humidity container is strongly recommended. Additionally, a fully enclosed 3D printer with a heated bed (typically up to 100–110°C) is essential for maintaining consistent print quality and reducing warping, especially when working with high-performance materials like PA6-CF or PC.

– Safety. It’s also important to take safety precautions when printing and handling these filaments. Some materials may emit fumes or fine particles during extrusion, and carbon fiber-filled variants in particular can release airborne fibers during sanding or post-processing. Always work in a well-ventilated area and consider using a HEPA filter or air purifier alongside your printer. When post-processing, wear appropriate personal protective equipment such as a dust mask or respirator. In some cases, even gloves are recommended, as fine particles may cause skin irritation or rub into the skin during handling. Taking these steps ensures you can safely use engineering-grade materials in a home or workshop setting without compromising health.

EIBOS has been bringing innovative 3D tech to the market since early 2020, from filament dryers to the Oceanus 3-in-1 resin cleaner, as well as a wide range of uniquely colored filaments. I’ve worked with their design team over the years and had the chance to follow the early development of the Series X Tetras. With multicolor printing now mainstream — and drying needs more important than ever — many users have asked the same question: Do I need to buy an entirely new setup just to get reliable drying? The answer, thanks to this upgrade, is no. The Series X Tetras is designed as a modular, easy-to-install kit that transforms your existing AMS unit into a multi-bay filament dryer.

This article is based entirely on my own hands-on experience setting up and running the Tetras on a Bambu Lab X1C. Assembly and Setup

The EIBOS Series X Tetras is designed for a straightforward upgrade of the Bambu Lab AMS. With clearly labeled parts and step-by-step visuals in the manual, the entire process is beginner-friendly and tool-light.

Overview and Prep

After unboxing, begin by reviewing the layout diagrams provided in the product manual (front and rear views). Carefully handle components and lay them out for quick access.

Core Installation (AMS Integration)

1) Remove the AMS lid: Unscrew the 4 rear screws securing the AMS v1 top cover.

2) Attach the Tetras upper cover: Align it with the AMS and secure using the original screws.

3) Install support frames: Turn the AMS upside down (use included foam) and attach the 4 support frames to the base using M3 H8 screws. Ensure channels face outward.

Cabling and Module Assembly

4) Connect USB-C cables: Plug in the labeled cables — power module to rear, screen module to front, and heating station leads routed through the outer channels.

5) Attach modules: Secure the power module to the rear and the screen module to the front brackets using M3 H10 screws. Confirm no cables are pinched and all connections are firm.

6) Final connections: Complete all USB-C wiring: screens to front, power to rear, and long leads to heating stations.

7) Attach rubber feet: Place 4 on the front and 4 on the rear module brackets.

8) Assemble front baffle set: Clip the acrylic parts in this sequence: A (left), B, B (center), C (right).

9) Insert assembled baffles: Fit into their corresponding slots as per diagram.

10) Install middle baffles: Use the acrylic fixings to insert in the order: B, A, B.

11) Secure rear baffles: These lock in the acrylic housing. Fit them gently — do not force.

12) Apply gasket: Add the silicone strip between the upper and lower housing to complete the chamber seal.

Operating the Dryer

– Screen Layout / Settings
The display screen is much like previous Eibos dryer models and is easy to use with the simple layout.

Before powering on, it’s worth checking the voltage label on the back of the unit to ensure it matches your region’s standard safety requirements.

Once connected, a single press of the power button brings the dryer online. You can toggle between drying-only and humidity-controlled modes depending on your needs. There’s also a factory reset option, but I never had to use it.

Filament types, such as PLA, ABS, PETG, and TPU, can be selected via the Option button. Each preset automatically loads the ideal drying parameters, but you can override them if necessary. I liked that the system remembers custom material profiles (M1 and M2), which is useful if you frequently switch between brands or experimental filaments.

Using the Setting button, you can cycle through key parameters:
Drying temperature (20°C – 65°C)
Drying time (30 minutes – 24 hours)
Power level (Low / Medium / High)
An optional humidity threshold if you’re using it in “smart” mode

One handy feature is the Second-Stage Drying Mode. I didn’t use it every time, but when drying filaments that had been sitting unsealed for weeks, it came in useful. It’s activated through the dedicated button and offers the same level of control as the primary cycle.

For me, the screens were responsive and easy to understand. The segmented layout clearly displays set temperature, live temp, humidity, and time remaining — all at a glance.

During the drying function, the sealing cover will automatically open and remain in an open Position. Once drying is complete, the cover automatically closes and maintains the sealing condition of the chamber. In the event of a sudden power loss or external interference that causes the cover to fall or remain open, you can manually adjust it.


In use Operation

Once the assembly was complete, I mounted the Tetras unit on top of my Bambu Lab X1C, in its usual position. What stood out immediately was how seamlessly it fit in: the overall look and functionality of the setup remained unchanged. I connected the familiar PTFE tube and cables, with the only notable difference being the need for a second power socket. That said, having the ability to actively dry filament during printing is a huge win. It felt like a natural upgrade rather than a workaround.

Over the following days, I ran a range of prints using both new and previously opened filaments. The model I chose was the Happy Sitting Pot Horns Hand by TomoDesigns on MakerWorld. It was printed at 0.2 mm layer height using two color variants. Despite the filament’s exposure to ambient air, the result came out clean and consistent, showing that the drying system really makes a difference.

Model 2: Pencil Holder
This model was preloaded on the SD card of the Bambu Lab X1C, and since my wife needed a pencil holder, it was the perfect choice. I printed it in a single color to see how the Series X Tetras would perform in a basic single-bay scenario. I set the dryer to run for about 6.5 hours to cover the full print duration, and when I checked back, it had shut off exactly as scheduled. Simple, effective, and spot on for everyday use.

Model 3: Rock People by Blob Lab
I printed the Rock People models by Blob Lab, found on Patreon, using multi-color filament. Each one was printed individually due to the nature of the design, and I ended up completing over a dozen of them. In the past, I’ve had issues with damp filament causing failed prints, especially on detailed models like these.

For this run, I used all four filament slots on the Tetras and dried the spools for about six hours before printing. The results were noticeably more consistent.

I carried out temperature performance tests on each bay to compare the readings from the unit’s display with an external temperature sensor. The temperature ramped up quickly after entering the settings and reached the target range within the expected timeframe. Airflow across the chambers was even and steady, contributing to a reliable drying environment.

My FilaDryer SP2 arrived in a package including one Base, 2× Boxes, and 2× Spools (approximate value: $173). The two filament spools were securely packed in the second box. I’m not sure if this bundle will be available later, but it makes sense and is cost-effective in terms of transportation.

Features & Design

SP2 stands for Smart Printing, 2 for modular design.
SUNLU has followed the trend by releasing their own modular filament dryer. This system not only dries the filament but also serves as effective storage and can be convenient for transportation. I’m not sure if it was intentional, but the ability to stack the boxes on top of each other is also space-saving.

– Airtight. Compared to SUNLU’s other filament dryers, the S2 and FilaDryer S4, the SP2 stands out for being airtight. The top lid closes very securely, and the bottom plugs are lined with rubber around the perimeter to ensure a tight seal.

– Temperature. As promised, it maintains 70°C at the maximum setting. As shown on my infrared camera, the heating element itself reaches around 80°C, while the spools heat up to approximately 70°C. This temperature is sufficient for drying popular materials like PLA and is suitable for storing engineering-grade filaments such as PA (Nylon) and CF (Carbon Fiber blends). For drying and even annealing engineering-grade materials, the FilaDryer E2 is more appropriate, as it can reach temperatures up to 110°C.

– Teflon Tubes. As the instructions suggest, PTFE tubes should be installed, especially when there’s a sharp curve in the filament path. I used the FilaDryer SP2 while printing DeathRacer side panels on the Snapmaker Artisan, using extra-long PTFE tubes (not the ones included). These tubes were 110 cm in length. The included PTFE tubes are one meter.

This setup worked very well. Humidity remained at 20% even after a few days, when I printed the second side panel. I didn’t need to dismantle the heating base and assemble the bottom plug panels for that lengthy pause. Despite the dryer being positioned some distance away from the printer, there was no noticeable resistance that interfered with printing.

Here’s an example of the SUNLU FilaDryer SP2 feeding filament to the Creality K1 without a PTFE tube. It worked well with PLA, even with a slight curve in the filament path.

– Noise. Here are the decibel meter readings with the lid on and off. Devices like this naturally produce some noise during operation. In comparison to the FilaDryer S4, which measured 59 dB (lid on) and 73 dB (lid off), the SP2 is noticeably quieter, thanks to its airtight design.

– Open/Closed Plugs. Just a quick reminder: when the heating base is ON, it’s important to keep the side filament plugs open to allow warm, humid air to escape. Once drying is complete, close the plugs for storage. This method makes it easy to reach and maintain a humidity level of 15–20%.

After years of testing and reviewing resin 3D printing post-processing solutions, we are compiling a detailed guide on this category. Post-processing is a crucial aspect of resin 3D printing, requiring additional equipment such as wash and UV curing stations. Much like 3D printers, washing and curing stations have seen improvements over time, making them more efficient and enhancing the user experience.

Pickle Container and Direct Sun

Before affordable two-in-one options became available on the markets, professional washing and curing equipment was seen as either too expensive or too bulky to accompany desktop budget resin 3D printers. If the rinsing process in a pickle jar is straightforward and some old-school makers still use it for particular prints, then leaving fresh prints outdoors to UV cure in direct sunlight is tricky, and we would not recommend trying it without proper research.
Daylight UV curing. The process is hard to control, takes much longer, with the risk of over-curing the resin parts. With this process, a model would need to be turned around manually.

The Best Bundles and 2-in-1 Solutions

2-in-1 solutions are well-suited for casual printing frequency. Space-wise, such stations can be the best option, but it also means a slight rearrangement every time you switch from washing to curing. Specifically, you’ll need to set up and remove the turntable part so that the tank with the cleaning solution can fit onto the base.
Then, bundles are practically two separate machine sets that are more suitable for frequent printing.

In both cases, curing stations are equipped with turntables. However, please bear in mind that these turntables cannot be used for photography or 3D scanning. For safety reasons, the turntable operates only when the UV-blocking enclosure is placed on the machine.

Ultrasonic Cleaner Professional Washing Equipment

The first thing to mention is that professional washing equipment is relatively inexpensive to obtain, and it has special functions like managing temperature, for example.

We printed and washed many miniature models when we reviewed the Elegoo Neptune 4. We did the following: First, we rinsed them in dirty IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol), then prepared them to be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner in a jar with clean IPA. Read the full post-processing experience here.

Some reviewers on Amazon mentioned the weakness of UV lights for such prints as molds, but overall, with a rating of 4.4 stars, this product is doing well. And we can see why. The combination of an Ultrasonic Cleaner and a Curing Box may be a to-go-for option if there are no issues with a 3D printing workshop space.

And the last item we wanted to mention in this guide is a UV light torch. Sometimes, resin 3D models are so complex that particularly deep hidden angles or curves might need additional curing. Assembly and Setup

The Eibos Oceanus assembled quickly and was ready within a few minutes from unboxing, following the simple instructions manual. The intuitive touch screen made for a seamless user experience, and the simple on-screen information makes for the Oceanus to be accessible for all types of user experience.

As shown in the image below the Eibos Oceanus has two ports for liquid inlet and outlet, connecting both pipes was easy, however as noted the pipes are fairly rigid in nature. But this would be to ensure the integrity of the pipe remained, given the nature of products flowing through them.

– Filters. Oceanus is equipped with filter screen structures and valve in several locations. These filters and valves can effectively prevent resin residue or other large particles from entering the pump body, which in order to ensure the normal operation of Oceanus under long-term work.

– Sensors. Three different designs for preventing liquid spills are included in the Oceanus design. The Oceanus has a built-in water level sensor that can detect water level automatically. There are three distinct water level detections in total: low, medium, and high. These sensors’ functionality is dependent on the settings.


Additionally, a spare Hall sensor for high liquid level is located above the high water level sensor. Should the liquid level be surpassed, it will instantly cease and sound an alarm, Next to it, the top cover of a physical sensor is being adjusted. dependable and safe.

The Oceanus, which has a specially designed high-torque motor, also employs innovative waterproof technology. The Oceanus now has greater stirring power as a result. Instead of using a traditional magnet stirrer, a high-torque stirring motor and custom-designed impeller will 同学的妈妈3中字巴巴鱼汤饭惹 a powerful water flow that will allow the brush to reach areas that the brush cannot, as well as provide a cleaner and more detailed post-processing result.

– Volume. The internal volume of the Eibos Oceanus is 175 × 125 × 160 mm (6.89 × 4.92 × 6.3 inches), so models within this range can be washed, dried, and cured. however, it would be wise to stay well within this range due to the size limitations. This was something I found during my review video on my channel.

– Safety. As seen above, the open-door function ensures a safe working environment. It instantly cuts out the unit, but once closed, it resumes as intended. However, during my testing phase, I attached a strong magnet to override this feature to showcase the Oceanus’s capabilities during filming. It’s strongly advised not to override the safety feature.

Testing and Results

Below are some models that I printed specifically for testing on the Eibos Oceanus to showcase its capabilities. All of the models seen in this review were printed on the Creality Mage Pro 8k resin printer.

Model 1

Mandalorian model by Printed Obsession printed on the Creality Mage Pro 8k using Elegoo 3.0 ABS-like resin from Amazon, this was a hollow model, the model needed to be flipped upside down to fully submerse into the tank. Overall, the model washed, dried and cured exceptionally, with no visible issues, as seen in the image below.

Model 2

Tabaxi Monk model by Printed Obsession. Printed on the Creality Mage Pro 8k using Yousu UTH Nebula pink resin. This model was sliced via the CrealityCloud function. Overall, the model came out stunning and once again washed, dried and cured perfectly. As seen in the image below.

Model 3

Chinese Dragon model by Icenvain was once again printed on the Creality Mage Pro 8K using Elegoo 3.0 ABS-like resin; the model was sliced via the Creality cloud app. Unfortunately, the model was too large for the full model to be fully submersed, but I was able to place the model on each end and wash and cure using the magnet in place. But once again the build volume of the Eibos Oceanus should be considered when slicing any model.
